Evacuation alert issued for Musgrave Harbour, N.L.

The town of Musgrave Harbour has been given an evacuation alert due to a nearby wildfire. Crews are currently monitoring the fire, which is located southwest of the town, near Pine Pond. The Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture says residents should prepare for a possible evacuation should the fire spread toward the town. Water bombers and a helicopter will be working on the fire today. Meanwhile the air quality warning on the Bonavista peninsula due to the fire near Chance Harbour has been lifted. As of Saturday, that fire had grown to over 1,660 hectares and was still considered out of control. Provincial Fire Duty Officer Wesley Morgan says the wind has been helping keep the fire away from the nearby towns of Jamestown and Winter Brook. However it is still very much considered an active fire.

Wildfire on Newfoundland's Bonavista Peninsula mapped as largest in the province

CHANCE HARBOUR, N.L. — Newfoundland and Labrador's Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture says a wildfire near Chance Harbour on the Bonavista Peninsula is now the largest in the province. In a post on social media it says the size of the blaze is now mapped at 16.6 square kilometres, up from 15 square kilometres just about a day earlier, although the department notes this growth could have happened over time. The department says firefighters continue to fight the blaze, and are using various equipment including water bombers and helicopters. It says a sprinkler system is being used on the south and southeast section of the wildfire, closest to the communities of Jamestown and Winter Brook, and there has been no growth of the flames in that direction. There are five active wildfires with two — Chance Harbour and Winokapu in Labrador — being classified as out-of-control, meaning the firefighting efforts are not fully able to contain the flames. It has been a busy wildfire season for the province with 170 blazes so far this year, scorching an estimated 60 square kilometres of ground. The Canadian Press

Another fire is burning out of control near Churchill Falls, but no impact to community, says N.L. Hydro

A wildfire continues to burn near Churchill Falls, Labrador as the provincial government warns the surrounding area is at a high risk. According to the provincial wildfire dashboard, the fire broke out on Monday and has burned approximately one hectare. The province's fire hazard rating map, which was last updated on Monday, indicates the area around the hydroelectric plant in the community has a high and very high fire hazard rating. "As of this morning, there are no impacts on the community or operations," wrote company spokesperson Jill Pitcher in an email to CBC News. CBC News has asked the Department of Fisheries, Forestry and Agriculture for an update on Tuesday's firefighting efforts. On Monday, the department said the fire started near the ski hill area of the community and there was no immediate risk to health or safety. The statement also said Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro was fighting the fire from the air with helicopters, while another helicopter, water bomber and three firefighters were dispatched from Happy-Valley Goose Bay to assist. Last month, emergency crews responded to an out of control wildfire near the community that burned an estimated 170 hectares. These fires come approximately a year after a large wildfire forced thousands of people to flee the community, including power plant workers. At the time, it raised concerns about the community's vital hydroelectric power plant. Other areas of Labrador also have high fire hazard ratings, and the towns of Labrador City and Wabush have issued fire bans due to concerns over high winds. On the island, multiple fire bans are in place across the Avalon Peninsula, including St. John's, Mount Pearl, Conception Bay South and Portugal Cove-St Philip's.
