LABUAN: Her Majesty Raja Zarith Sofiah, Queen of Malaysia, officially opened the inaugural Borneo Flora Festival 2025 at the Labuan International Sea Sports Complex today. The event, themed 'Borneo Tropical Flora', highlighted the region's rich floral and cultural heritage through vibrant performances and exhibitions. The festival began with a lively showcase of traditional dances, including the Magunatip, a rhythmic bamboo dance performed by the Murut community of Sabah. The cultural performances set a festive tone, drawing visitors from across Malaysia and beyond. Accompanied by dignitaries such as the Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa and Sarawak Governor's wife Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, Her Majesty toured intricately designed gardens crafted by government agencies, NGOs, and local communities. FTs must not be viewed as homogenous entity
LABUAN: The Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan must not be viewed as a homogenous entity, as each faces distinct economic and social challenges that demand tailored solutions, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa. "For too long, the Federal Territories have been treated as one homogenous unit. "However, when we consider the realities of economic well-being and public welfare, it is clear that Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan each face very different sets of challenges," she said in a Facebook post today. Speaking after a post-Cabinet engagement session following the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) discussions with Ministry of Economy officials, Dr Zaliha said the meeting allowed her and the leadership of the Department of Federal Territories to convey the true aspirations of the people in all three territories. In Kuala Lumpur, she highlighted a growing income gap among urban residents, noting that this widening disparity necessitates a recalibration of the city's growth ecosystem to ensure inclusivity and that no group is left behind. For Putrajaya, she said its continuing role as the country's administrative centre, adding that it should lead policy innovation and uphold transparency in public governance. Dr Zaliha said Labuan requires a more strategic approach, noting that the island accounts for Malaysia's second-highest GDP per capita but that the returns to its people do not reflect this contribution. "Labuan's tax collection stands at around RM47 million, while expenditure reaches RM95 million. "This fiscal imbalance must be addressed. "Additionally, the local economy's dependence on the oil and gas sector has waned compared to a decade ago," she said. She urged a shift toward alternative growth drivers, such as tourism and the blue economy, to reinvigorate Labuan's development. "The 13MP's approach to the Federal Territories must not be one-size-fits-all. "We must acknowledge the uniqueness of each territory's challenges and strengths, and craft solutions that are locally tailored and focused on delivering real impact for the people," she added. – Bernama

Dr Zaliha: JWP, agencies committed to implementing Kembara Diraja
KUALA LUMPUR: Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa has directed the Department of Federal Territories (JWP) and all agencies under it to coordinate the implementation of the Kembara Diraja (Royal Tour), as decreed by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia. In a statement on her Facebook page, she said the tour would provide an opportunity for His Majesty to personally engage with the people across the three Federal Territories and distribute zakat aid to those in need. Yesterday, Sultan Ibrahim announced that he would embark on the Kembara Diraja across the Federal Territories to observe the people's living conditions firsthand and distribute zakat to the poor and the eight eligible asnaf groups. His Majesty made the remarks during the 2025 Investiture Ceremony held in conjunction with his official birthday at Istana Negara yesterday. Dr Zaliha said JWP also fully supports His Majesty's emphasis on the need for civil servants to uphold the principle of Loyalty to the King and Country, which aligns with the Harmoni work culture introduced in the Federal Territories as a foundation for good governance. "As a policy-implementing body, JWP personnel will remain committed to enhancing the delivery of public services that are efficient, with integrity and people-oriented, in line with the spirit of Malaysia Madani," she said. – BERNAMA
