DGR, UK Embassy to explore partnerships in various fields
The meeting was led by Sheikh Fahim Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Department of Government Relations, and Edward Hobart, British Ambassador to the UAE. They were joined by H.E. Sarah Mooney, British Trade Commissioner for the Middle East and Pakistan, and British Consul General in Dubai; Sheikh Majid bin Abdullah Al Qasimi, Director of DGR; Stacy Keating, Second Secretary (Political Affairs) at the British embassy in the UAE; Amanda Buckley, Cultural Affairs Officer at the British embassy in the UAE; and Martin Daltry, Country Director for the British Council in the UAE . During discussions, Sharjah outlined its planned government, community, and cultural initiatives for the next year, and dialogue also centered on identifying collaboration opportunities in shared priority areas, as well as facilitating information exchange regarding the UK's 2025 programmes . Strategic partnerships in intellectual and cultural exchange In his comments on the meeting, Sheikh Fahim Al Qasimi emphasised that the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, is founded on the belief that culture and knowledge are among the most vital pillars for shaping strong international relations that can truly impact the course of human development. He stated that Sharjah views cultural and academic cooperation as a sustainable path for building bridges of understanding between nations . He added: 'Our meeting with the British Embassy delegation is an extension of this vision and a reflection of a deep-rooted belief that knowledge-based partnerships are the foundation of such engagement. These partnerships have already fostered a thriving cultural and intellectual movement within the emirate, enriching Sharjah's society and strengthening its position as an international hub for research and education. The unique integration of Sharjah's creative economy with its broader economic infrastructure enhances its capacity to host impactful collaborations with leading global institutions; an approach that is clearly reflected in the outcomes of this meeting .' Supporting higher education and academic exchange The delegates also explored collaboration prospects in higher education through the development of joint academic programmes between British universities and their counterparts in Sharjah. These programmes would focus on fields such as media, engineering, and the humanities, reinforcing Sharjah's position as a regional hub for knowledge and higher education . Development of creative industries and cultural events Additionally, the dialogue addressed support for the creative industries through partnerships encompassing arts, design, digital media, and content creation, and potential collaboration with the Sharjah Creative Quarter (SCQ) was also a key focus. Established in January 2025, the SCQ aims to enhance the emirate's creative economy by organizing joint cultural initiatives, facilitating expertise exchange, and empowering cultural entrepreneurs . This high-level meeting exemplifies a mutual commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation through strategic projects and initiatives designed to achieve shared developmental and cultural goals, thereby creating new pathways for institutional integration and knowledge exchange .

UOS's Francophonie Center marks Intl Francophonie Day
The celebration drew a distinguished guest list, including His Excellency Sheikh Fahim bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairman of Sharjah's Department of Government Relations, who attended as guest of honour. Joining him were His Excellency Dr. Salem Al Neyadi, the UAE's Ambassador to the International Organisation of La Francophonie; Sheikha Raad bint Fahim Al Qasimi, Francophonie Relations Executive at the Department of Government Relations; His Excellency Seko Kamara, Ambassador of the Republic of Kenya to the UAE and his deputy; Prof. Yousef Haik, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs; Prof. Adnan Serhan, Dean of the College of Law; and Prof. Rasha Hattab, Director of the Francophonie Center. In his opening remarks, Prof. Yousef Haik welcomed His Excellency Sheikh Fahim and the audience, underscoring the University of Sharjah's steady march toward global prominence. He highlighted the University's comprehensive strategy to bolster its international standing through robust partnerships with academic, research, and cultural institutions worldwide. What sets the University of Sharjah apart, he noted, is its extraordinary cultural diversity noting that it is home to students from over 100 nationalities making it a true crossroads of civilisations and a vibrant platform for intercultural dialogue. In his turn, His Excellency Dr. Salem Al Neyadi emphasised the significance of this annual occasion in strengthening bonds of friendship and cooperation with the International Organisation of La Francophonie, the world's second-largest international organisation, uniting 90 member states across five continents. He stressed that cultural and linguistic diversity is fundamental to fostering tolerance, coexistence, and mutual respect. His Excellency Dr. Al Neyadi pointed out that the UAE's commitment to the Francophone world, since joining the organisation in 2010, reflects the forward-looking vision of its leadership. He also commended the University of Sharjah's outstanding efforts to promote the French language and to deepen scientific collaboration with Francophone academic institutions, thanks in large part to the pioneering work of the Francophonie Center, the first of its kind in the country. Guest of honor His Excellency Sheikh Fahim bin Sultan Al Qasimi paid tribute to the visionary leadership of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, whose dedication has transformed Sharjah into a beacon of knowledge and culture, open to the world yet firmly rooted in its identity. His Excellency Sheikh Fahim spoke passionately about the power of language, describing it as far more than a tool for communication. 'It is a vessel of culture and identity, a bridge to understanding and connection,' he noted. He emphasised that mastering another's language is the key to grasping the depth of their culture, traditions, and worldview. His Excellency concluded by affirming the vital role of cultural exchange and international cooperation in building bridges of understanding between nations, paving the way for a brighter future for humanity. In her address to the gathering, Prof. Rasha Hattab, Director of the Francophonie Center, highlighted the University's growing community of nearly seventy French-speaking or French-learning students. She praised the center's expanding role in fostering regional academic cooperation, especially following its recent hosting of the Conference of University Presidents in the Middle East. Prof. Hattab noted that the Francophone Student Club embodies a new generation that embraces French as a living, shared culture on campus and beyond. She pointed to the center's partnerships with Arab and international institutions, which are opening doors to joint programs, promising research, and training opportunities. UoS, she affirmed, is determined to make Sharjah a beacon of Francophone culture in the Gulf. The festivities featured a vibrant array of activities, including a student exhibition celebrating French culture and history, a dialogue session between students and Sheikha Raad bint Fahim Al Qasimi, and a series of workshops on topics such as international law, Napoleonic legal terminology, women's suffrage, and the Arabic words and phrases borrowed into French. The event concluded with the announcement of scholarships for French language study at the Vichy Institute in France and at the Alliance Française in Sharjah, rewarding the University's most promising Francophone students.

Sheikh Fahim Al Qasimi: Non-oil trade between the UAE and the European Union continues to record stable growth rates, with Belgium emerging as a key partner within this framework. Sharjah, As part of its ongoing efforts to advance economic and trade cooperation with Belgium, the Department of Government Relations (DGR) in Sharjah hosted an official dinner at The Chedi Al Bait Hotel. The event was held in the presence of Sheikh Fahim Al Qasimi, Chairman of DGR, and H.E. Antoine Delcourt, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Belgium to the United Arab Emirates, alongside diplomats, investors, and senior officials from both sides. Sharjah's strategic commitment to deepening its economic ties with the European Union was reflected in the event, which aimed to identify new avenues for collaboration and investment. It provided a valuable opportunity for exchanging expertise and insights, while also exploring practical steps to expand economic cooperation in alignment with the emirate's broader development objectives. The event featured a comprehensive presentation that highlighted Sharjah's key economic sectors and the promising prospects available to European investors, particularly in technology, logistics, healthcare, education, and culture. A growing partnership with Belgium Commenting on the event, Sheikh Fahim Al Qasimi affirmed that the meeting represented a significant milestone in the steadily advancing partnership between Sharjah and Belgium. He highlighted the emirate's ongoing commitment to strengthening both economic and cultural ties with member states of the European Union, noting that the EU is the UAE's second-largest trading partner. The Chairman said: 'Current economic indicators demonstrate the resilience and depth of relations between the UAE and the European Union, with non-oil trade continuing on a consistent upward trajectory. Within this framework, Belgium plays a key role, particularly in re-export and logistical integration. It stands as the UAE's leading partner in re-exports to EU markets, underscoring the strategic connectivity between our ports and markets.' He added: 'Bilateral economic relations between the UAE and Belgium are increasingly robust, characterised by strong growth in non-oil trade. The UAE accounts for a notable portion of Belgium's trade with the Arab world, reflecting a foundation of confidence. This trust supports the advancements of partnerships in innovation, technology, and infrastructure. We are confident that today's meeting will serve as a catalyst for new opportunities, encouraging Belgian investors to explore the unique advantages Sharjah offers as a gateway to the region.' This meeting is part of a series previously held between the DGR and Belgian counterparts, both in the UAE and in Brussels. It reflects Sharjah's long-term vision to foster enduring partnerships with European investors and solidify its position as a leading destination for high-value investments in the region.

How Sharjah bridges Arab East and West at Morocco book fair
Sharjah: Sharjah's participation in the Rabat International Book Fair 2025 marks a strategic milestone in reinforcing the UAE's cultural influence across the Arab world and on the global stage, according to senior officials. Leading cultural figures and institutional heads noted that the emirate's presence as Guest of Honour is opening new pathways for cultural integration and collaboration between the UAE and Morocco. Organised by the Sharjah Book Authority (SBA), the emirate's pavilion showcases contributions from more than 18 prominent cultural institutions. The official delegation, led by Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Chairperson of SBA, reflects a purposeful effort to spotlight Sharjah's intellectual legacy and to strengthen cultural and institutional partnerships with Moroccan, regional, and international stakeholders. Sheikh Fahim Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Department of Government Relations (DGR) in Sharjah, termed the emirate as Guest of Honour is a testament to the longstanding ties between the UAE and Morocco. 'It embodies a shared Arab cultural destiny that Sharjah actively contributes to, through a sustained commitment to knowledge, cultural awareness, and openness.' Ahmed bin Rakkad Al Ameri, CEO of SBA, said the participation reflects the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, to build a unified Arab cultural framework rooted in harmony and shared values. 'Rabat and Sharjah, each with its historical significance in nurturing cultural and intellectual awareness, now join forces to reinforce the cohesion of Arab cultural discourse and to open new avenues for creative exchange between the eastern and western Arab worlds.' Meeting point of Arab East and West Dr Sultan Al Ameemi, Chairman of the Emirates Writers Union, said the participation of Emirati authors in an intellectually rich programme marks a meaningful encounter between the Arab East and West. 'Furthermore, the translation of Emirati literary works into the Amazigh language establishes a new channel for cultural dialogue, amplifying the voices of Emirati writers and connecting them with an ancient and esteemed linguistic heritage.' Dr Abdulaziz Al Musallam, Chairman of the Sharjah Institute for Heritage, said: 'We hope this participation will serve as an exceptional platform for dialogue, helping to reinforce Sharjah's status as a capital of Arab and global culture, and marking a new milestone in the journey of knowledge and creative exchange between the Arab world and globally.' Preserving history through maps Ali Ibrahim Al Marri, Chairman of the Dr Sultan Al Qasimi Centre, stated that the Centre is participating with a collection of historical maps documenting the history of the Arabian Gulf region. Sourced from the personal collection of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah, these maps illustrate the evolution of cartographic science across various historical periods. Empowering women in publishing PublisHer, the global initiative founded by Sheikha Bodour to support and empower women in publishing, will deliver two engaging panels at the Sharjah stand. Titled 'Navigating the Challenges: Women Editors, Authors, and Publishers in the Mena Region' and 'Women in Translation: Ensuring Diverse Literary Access', the sessions will explore the challenges faced by female professionals in the region's publishing industry and outline practical strategies for overcoming barriers, accessing opportunities, and promoting diverse literary voices internationally.

Sharjah offers a Global Paradigm for human development
Sharjah: Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, wife of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah, welcomed a distinguished delegation of female diplomats to the United Arab Emirates, in a gathering held at Al Bade'a Palace, organised by the Department of Government Relations in Sharjah. The gathering sought to enrich cross-cultural dialogue, fortify international diplomatic ties, and present Sharjah's pioneering model in empowering women and cultivating a sustainable, human-centric social ecosystem. Sheikha Jawaher shared her personal journey in initiating a holistic developmental path that complements Sharjah's governmental efforts in social advancement and strengthening the familial and communal values. From establishing Sharjah Girls' Club that became a haven for women and their children, to founding campaigns and organisations that reinforced social cohesion, and ultimately expanding into philanthropic endeavours that extended benevolence across continents, every milestone reflected a profound humanitarian philosophy. She affirmed that genuine empowerment begins with the provision of dignified, safe environments that allow individuals, especially women, to contribute fully to the progress of society. 'In Sharjah, we do not follow trends, rather we create ones that are aligned with our beliefs and values. For us, culture is not a rhetorical motto, but a tangible practice embodied in our children and youth', said Sheikha Jawaher. 'What began as a humble space for women and children evolved into a comprehensive network of organisations shaping profound messages of empowerment and national identity. We live in an era of swift knowledge and our children deserve guidance with inspirational reflection, curiosity, and the ability to perceive knowledge from myriad sources.' Sheikha Jawaher also underscored the vision of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, in highlighting the culture and Emirati identity through documenting scenes from the history. Beyond traditional documentation methods, His Highness pursued visual storytelling, as exemplified by the historical film 'Khorfakkan', a cinematic endeavour produced under his direct supervision to preserve historical authenticity untainted by dramatic embellishment. This initiative, among others, ensures future generations understand the sacrifices of their ancestors and the foundations of the nation they inherit. The attending ambassadors expressed profound admiration for Her Highness and the model of humane leadership she represents, one that places human dignity at the heart of governance.
