Media should not appease anyone, including me, says Karnataka CM

'If the times are such that we have to fight to find the real news, does that not mean that fake news is on the rise?' asked Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, inaugurating a conversation on 'Fight for Real News' at the 'Press Day - 2025' celebrations organised by the Karnataka Media Academy, Department of Information and Public Relations, and the Working Journalists' Association. Calling out the dangers of speculation in journalism, he said, 'Speculative journalism is dangerous to journalism itself and to society. Fake and speculative journalism must be countered.' Reiterating that media must function independently and fearlessly, he said, 'Media should not appease anyone, including me. No matter how many lies are told about me on various channels, I don't call anyone.' He also launched the free bus pass scheme for rural journalists and the 'Health Sanjeevini' plan for journalists during the event. 'Media prioritising profits' 'Media and journalism are two different entities. Media organisations have become corporate behemoths while journalism is about finding the right facts,' said P. Sainath, renowned journalist and founder-editor of the People's Archive of Rural India (PARI), who delivered the keynote address on 'The battle for factual reporting'. He said, 'The presence of conglomerates which now control vast swathes of media outlets — nearly 30% of India's media and over 70 channels, reaching nearly 800 million viewers — has made media into a single large corporate entity and has reduced journalists to stenographers of power'. He attributed this trend to be a key factor in the erosion of facts. 'Corporations, in their quest to gain more profits, are trying to homogenise where they have diversity, but they reflect brilliantly the inequalities in society,' he said. He further added, 'Journalistic integrity suffers as the truth does not come out due to vested interests'. He concluded by urging the need to 'break corporate monopoly and bring in truth to news'.

Fearless reporting is the soul of Journalism

Mangaluru: Journalism without fearless reporting is meaningless,' observed Mangaluru Police Commissioner Sudhir Kumar Reddy, while addressing a gathering at the Press Club here on Wednesday. He was speaking after presenting the Brand Mangaluru Award to journalist Vijay Kotian. The event was organised by the Dakshina Kannada Working Journalists' Association. Citing the example of Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya, Reddy underscored the importance of courage in journalism. 'When your intentions are genuine, courage follows naturally. Journalists should not fear anything if they're committed to truth,' he said. He recalled how post-genocide Rwanda saw deep divisions between communities, with almost no communication between them. 'But it was the media—particularly radio—that began highlighting the good happening in society. Eventually, people came together, and the perpetrators were brought to justice. That transformation was led by journalism,' he noted. Highlighting the role of accuracy over speed, Reddy cautioned against hastily publishing unverified information. 'Accuracy is more important than how quickly a story is published. Journalists must not let false balance dilute the truth. There's no need to treat the accused and the victim the same in the name of neutrality,' he said. 'Writing the truth will invite challenges. But there is no need to fear if your writing stems from integrity and empathy. A journalist who writes with a clear conscience will never be shaken,' he asserted. Reddy called for 'conscientious and compassionate journalism,' and added:'The light that journalism brings must dispel the darkness in society. If journalists fail to carry that light, the shadow of injustice will remain, affecting the majority because of the actions of a few.' He concluded by saying that even if challenges persist, the press must work towards lasting peace. 'When we look back in times of peace, let us remember that it was fearless journalists who made that peace possible,' he said. Also present at the event were Khader Shah, Senior Assistant Director, Department of Information and Public Relations; Ramakrishna R., President of the Press Bhavan Trust; P.B. Harish Rai, President of Mangaluru Press Club; Srinivas Indaje, President of the Working Journalists' Association; Treasurer Pushparaj B.N.; and General Secretary Jitendra Kundeshwar.

Information pavilion showcasing State govt. achievements in two years inaugurated

Minister for Medical Education, Skill Development, Entrepreneurship and Livelihood Sharan Prakash Patil inaugurated an information pavilion at the Kalaburagi Central Bus Stand on Wednesday for showcasing the achievements of the State government in the last two years. Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Patil said that the government has implemented the five pre-poll guarantee schemes with the objective of strengthening the lives of the beneficiaries. 'The opposition should stop making baseless allegations and recognise the reality. These schemes have brought hope and security to the people of Karnataka,' he claimed. The pavilion, organised by the Department of Information and Public Relations, provides comprehensive information on the government's performance in agriculture, healthcare, infrastructure, housing and the welfare of marginalised communities in the last two years. It also features testimonials from beneficiaries, financial details and highlights the positive impact of the five guarantee schemes. 'Pragatiyatta Karnataka' (Progressing Karnataka), the theme of the exhibit, is supported by messages from Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar. Dr. Patil has appealed to the people to visit and explore the pavilion. Responding to a question about delays in disbursing the monthly ₹2,000 under the Gruha Lakshmi scheme, Dr. Patil clarified a delay of 10-15 days did not imply that the scheme has failed. 'The government has to function with financial constraints. We have implemented the schemes effectively for two years and we will continue to do it over the remaining three,' he added. Vice-president of the State Guarantee Schemes Implementation Authority, S.R. Mehroz Khan said that the guarantee schemes are rooted in the ideals of Basavanna, Mahatma Gandhi and B.R. Ambedkar. He commended the Department of Information and Public Relations for providing such a unique and accessible platform to educate the public. A brochure highlighting the progress of the five guarantee schemes was distributed to the public on the occasion. Open till June 10 The pavilion will remain open to the public until June 10.
