• A five-member team will study Andhra Pradesh's language policy to guide Karnataka's move to grant Tulu official status • The government has directed the committee to submit a detailed report within three months Mangaluru: In a decisive step toward granting official language status to Tulu, the Karnataka government has constituted a committee to study the linguistic policy framework adopted by Andhra Pradesh, particularly its process for declaring an additional official five-member study team, chaired by Gayatri KM, Director of the Department of Kannada and Culture, includes representatives from the Law Department, Personnel and Administrative Reforms Department, and cultural institutions such as the Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy and the Yakshagana Academy. The team is tasked with visiting Andhra Pradesh to gather information on the criteria and administrative procedures the state followed while designating additional official languages. In particular, the committee will assess the scale, scope, and legal modalities involved in implementing a second official language. Tulu, a Dravidian language spoken predominantly in coastal Karnataka and parts of Kerala, has long been at the centre of regional identity and cultural activism. This is the first time the Karnataka government has initiated a formal policy review toward official recognition. The government has directed the committee to submit a detailed report within three months.

MANGALURU: The Karnataka government has constituted a five-member committee to examine the criteria followed by Andhra Pradesh in declaring a second official language, as part of its initiative to recognise Tulu as the state's second official language. The committee, headed by Gayatri K.M., Director of the Department of Kannada and Culture, has been tasked with conducting a detailed study in Andhra Pradesh. It includes members such as Vanitha, Deputy Secretary of the Law Department; Moorthy K.N., Deputy Secretary of the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms; Taranath Gatti Kapikad, President of the Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy; and Sudhakar Shetty, a member of the Yakshagana Academy. The committee was constituted to investigate the standards and procedural framework allegedly adopted by Andhra Pradesh when it recognised another regional language as an additional official language. The government had previously gathered information regarding Andhra Pradesh's linguistic policies. Now, to gain a comprehensive understanding of how Andhra Pradesh has implemented the status of a second official language, including its scope, form, and legal recognition, the Karnataka government has directed the committee to complete the study and submit its report within three months.

Monthly Kannada lecture to explore creative challenges in translating Shakespeare
The Department of Kannada and Culture, in collaboration with Kuvempu Bhasha Bharathi Pradhikara, will host its monthly lecture on Friday, spotlighting the intricate art of literary translation. Writer and critic Nataraj Huliyar will deliver a talk titled 'Shakespeare Bhashantara Srujanasheela Savalugalu' , focusing on the creative challenges involved in translating the works of William Shakespeare into Kannada. The event will take place on the Kuvempu Bhasha Pradhikara premises, Kalagrama, at Mallathahalli at 5 p.m. It is open to the public.

Case against Kannada and Culture department head for assaulting Dalit artist
Director of the Department of Kannada and Culture KM Gayathri has been booked under provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) following a complaint by a Dalit artist who alleged that he was abused when he sought payment for long-pending complaint was filed by 55-year-old Jogila Siddaraju at the SJ Park police station in Bengaluru. Siddaraju alleged that he had visited the office of the director seeking the release of remuneration owed to a group of artists for the past three years. According to his statement, the situation escalated when Gayathri learnt of his caste Siddaraju warned Gayathri that he would complain to the higher-ups, she allegedly threw a computer mouse pad at him and snatched the mobile phone of his associate who attempted to record the incident, Siddaraju said in his complaint. He alleged that the official verbally abused him with casteist remarks, causing him humiliation and distress. The police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) under multiple sections of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and under BNS provisions related to voluntarily causing hurt and intentional insult aimed at provoking a breach of said further investigation is underway.
