'I'm the ANC boss at Luthuli House': Mbalula defends premature announcement of Mabuza's death

ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula has defended his decision to announce the death of former deputy president David Mabuza before the government. Mabuza died in hospital on Thursday. He will be honoured with a state funeral. Mbalula was criticised for sharing the news on social media two hours before President Cyril Ramaphosa and the ANC released a statement on the matter. His actions are said to have irritated the ANC's top brass and the office of the president, the Sunday Times reported. In an interview with eNCA, Mbalula said he has the authority to speak on behalf of the ANC as the secretary-general and saw nothing wrong with his actions. 'I'm the boss of the ANC at Luthuli House,' he said. 'I communicate with families, and families communicate with me. That must be respected. The criticism is unfortunate and unfair. 'Veterans of the ANC pass away; I get informed, and I communicate with the leadership I lead.' He said he was informed about Mabuza's death by his family while he was visiting a doctor. 'I did not pick up the news of Mabuza from the street; I was informed by the family as the SG of the ANC. I gave instructions to the head office ... not to announce the death but to express condolences through my platform. Then we released a statement.' Mbalula criticised journalists who questioned his actions. 'Mabuza was the deputy president of the ANC. As the SG, I have a cordial, good and strong bond and relationship with my president. Why do people want to draw a wedge over a non-issue? I'm the SG, not an ordinary member of the ANC or the NEC. I convey messages on behalf of the ANC. 'Let people attack me about many other things but let them not deface what I was elected for and reduce me to a street man who doesn't have responsibility at Luthuli House. If I were to give attention to this, I would never function.' TimesLIVE

South Africa: Statement by President Cyril Ramaphosa on the passing of former Deputy President David Mabuza

I have learned with deep sadness of the passing of former Deputy President and former Premier of Mpumalanga, David Dabede Mabuza. Deputy President Mabuza passed away today, Thursday, 3 July 2025, at a hospital following a short illness. He was 64 years of age. On behalf of Government and the nation, I offer my profound condolences to the late Deputy President's wife, Mrs Mabuza, and the children. I extend my condolences to Deputy President Mabuza's friends and the people of Mpumalanga whom he served as Premier from 2009 to 2018, and previously as a Member of the Executive Council of Mpumalanga across a range of portfolios. My thoughts are also with Deputy President Mabuza's comrades in his political home, the African National Congress, where he was elected as the organisation's Deputy President in December 2017. During his service as Deputy President of the Republic, Deputy President Mabuza applied his leadership and mobilisation abilities to his role as the Leader of Government Business in Parliament; leading the South African National Aids Council; coordinating anti-poverty initiatives in the form of Public Employment Programmes, Integrated Service Delivery and Enterprise Development. Deputy President Mabuza also represented South Africa on global platforms and consolidated relations between South Africa and its closest partners. As Deputy President, he chaired the Cabinet Committees of Governance, State Capacity and Institutional Development (GSCID) as well as Justice, Crime-Prevention and Security (JCPS). We are saddened today by the loss of a leader who was grounded in activism at the early stages of his political career and who came to lead our nation and shape South Africa's engagement with our continental compatriots and the international community in his role as Deputy President. The former Deputy President deserves our appreciation for his deep commitment to the liberation struggle and to the nation's development as an inclusive, prosperous, democratic state. Further announcements will be made in due course on memorial arrangements and the honours with which the country will pay its final respects to the former Deputy President. Distributed by APO Group on behalf of The Presidency of the Republic of South Africa.

PKR can't sweep things under the carpet in the name of stability, says Rafizi

Deputy president Rafizi Ramli said the next leadership must preserve PKR's reformist identity and not become a party that follows orders unquestioningly. JOHOR BAHRU : Party stability should not be used as an excuse to ignore or hide issues that have arisen, PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli said today. Rafizi, who is defending his number two post, said while the selection process had so far been peaceful with 'no chairs being thrown', it was important for the party to conclude the exercise swiftly and return to the business of governing. 'But you can't expect something that is not right (in the party) and it's swept under the carpet on the basis of party stability. 'You must allow debates, whether inside or outside. That should be the responsibility of the new leadership, as that is the core ideal of PKR,' he told reporters after casting his ballot for the central leadership council elections. He added that the next leadership must preserve PKR's reformist identity and not become a party that follows orders unquestioningly. 'I don't think members will just blindly follow. If there are issues, it is the responsibility of the new leadership to resolve them while preserving PKR's core essence,' he said. He warned that if the party obeyed everything blindly, 'the problem won't just be inside PKR – PKR might lose credibility as a reformist party'. Voting for the central leadership council concluded at 5pm, with the participation of over 30,000 delegates. The official results are expected to be announced by tomorrow afternoon.
