Eric Dane's ‘Countdown' Co-Stars Say He's Handling ALS Diagnosis With ‘Grace and Dignity': ‘He Wants Other People to Know They're Not Alone'

Eric Dane is being praised by his 'Countdown' co-stars for how he's handling his ALS diagnosis and using his platform to help others. Dane went public with his illness in April. 'I'm proud as hell at how he's handling it with such grace [and] dignity,' Jensen Ackles told me at the Amazon MGM show's Los Angeles premiere. 'I had no doubt that he was going to handle it this way. I couldn't be more proud of him. He knows I love him and support him with anything he needs.' 'I feel good,' Dane told me after posing for photos on the red carpet with his filmmaker girlfriend Janell Shirtcliff. 'It's nice to be here with everybody and see the hours and hours of work that we put into this come alive on screen.' Show creator and executive producer Derek Haas said, 'I wasn't surprised at how honest and open he is and how he puts others in front of himself, which is exactly the Eric that I know. He wants other people to know that they're not alone if they get this diagnosis.' 'Countdown' follows an LAPD detective (Ackles) who joins a secret government task force headed by Dane's character to try and stop a terrorist attack on Los Angeles. Jessica Camacho, who plays agent Amber Oliveras, said the cast and crew have become a 'family.' But she also admitted being 'terrified' when she first walked on set to work with Dane. 'He has this power about him,' Camacho said. 'He has this quiet confidence and it's beautiful on camera. I was properly petrified but then five minutes in, I saw his warmth, I saw his playfulness, his charisma and it just became so comfortable and so at ease and we're just such a work family.' Dane talked extensively about living with ALS with Diane Sawyer during a June 16 interview on 'Good Morning America.' 'My left side is functioning, my right side has completely stopped working,' the actor said, noting that his left arm has been getting weaker as well. 'I feel like maybe a couple more months and I won't have my left hand either. It's sobering.' The former 'Grey's Anatomy' star was in Washington on Monday at U.S. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy's news conference announcing that several health insurance companies are going to simplify and reduce prior authorizations over the next 18 months. 'When that diagnosis hits and you find out that you're sick, your life becomes filled with great uncertainty and that worst that we can do is add even more uncertainty for patients and their loved ones with unnecessary prior authorization,' Dane said. 'Anything we can do to give patients more certainty with fewer delays is a worthwhile endeavor.' Movie Tea: 'Wanted 2' Receives Update After 17 Years; Two New Faces Join Cast Of 'Dune 3'

Films always have something exciting for their respective target audiences to enjoy, especially when they are being made by two revolutionary visionaries in the field. From the potential resurrection of a beloved action thriller, to new actors joining a universe-sized franchise, here's the hottest news on upcoming projects coming out of Hollywood. 'Never Say Never' Writer Derek Haas Spills Tea On 'Wanted 2' Film After 17 years, 'Wanted' co-writer Derek Haas has finally returned with exciting news about the fate of the underrated action thriller! For those unfamiliar with the film, it is based on a comic of the same name by Mark Millar, where it follows Wesley Gibson, an everyday office worker-turned-assassin. Starring James McAvoy, Angelina Jolie, and Morgan Freeman, the film received praise from audiences and critics alike due to its intense action scenes and revolutionary CGI. Though it had a conclusive ending, reports suggest that Universal Studios was interested in a sequel with the same team back in 2011. In an interview about the upcoming Prime Video series, 'Countdown', ScreenRant was able to extract some news from Haas about the seemingly forgotten 2008 action film. Despite the years, the seasoned writer-director is still holding out for the possibility of his beloved film's sequel leaving development limbo. 'I loved everything about making 'Wanted',' said Haas, 'and if Universal decides at some point they want to do the second one, Michael Brandt and I wrote a script for it that I still think is pretty good. And James McAvoy, come on back, let's do Wesley again. It was really fun.' Rumours of 'Wanted 2' emerged as early as 2008, when the OG received box office success, but proper plans and updates did not occur until 2011. The film had everything going for it at the time: the original director, Timur Bekmambetov, returning to the franchise with the script already deep in development by Michael Brandt and Haas. Though there were several issues along the way, Haas confirms that the script is ready to be picked up and brought to life. Even though Universal has moved on to other projects, Haas is hopeful that the company will come around, stating, 'Never say never' to the possibility. Nakoa-Wolf Momoa & Ida Brooke Join 'Dune 3' When it comes to bringing the intricately beautiful universe of Frank Herbert's 'Dune' series to the big screen, director Denis Villeneuve spares no expense. It is because of this attitude that both of the recent 'Dune' movies became roaring successes, something that the esteemed director wishes to continue with the upcoming and most likely last installment — 'Dune: Messiah'. That's right, with the production of the film starting soon, Villeneuve scoured the vast roster of actors and actresses to find the perfect addition to the already star-studded cast, and has landed on Nakoa-Wolf Momoa (son of Jason Momoa) and Ida Brooke. The two new faces will be joining the cast as Leto II and Ghanima Atreides, respectively, Paul Atreides and Chani Kynes' twin children. It is worth noting that this will be Nakoa-Wolf's debut into the world of film, and what better way to get feet in the sand than by joining his dad on this franchise? Naturally, being children of the main protagonists of the 'Dune' series, these two characters are not to be trifled with, as they are meant to shape the fate of the universe and everyone in it. It is worth noting that, if you've read the novels, these two characters only appear near the end of 'Dune: Messiah' as newborns. The fact that they are now adult characters does flip the script on its head and might be the result of Villeneuve playing with the source material again. We say again, as he has done this with Paul's younger sister, Alia Atreides, who was still in the womb all the way until the end of the movie, save for a brief time skip into the future where she's played by Anya Taylor-Joy. With this in mind, we can potentially expect the Canadian filmmaker to once again move the story along by jumping forwards in time when the twin children take a more active role in the plot. We can also expect Villeneuve to further compress the story to something far more manageable for the moviegoers' palate, to no fault of his own — Herbert's books are just incredibly dense. But the director has done his best to stay as true to the source material as possible, and we can only imagine he'd do the same for this entry as well. Though many may already know what will inevitably happen in this upcoming movie, plot-wise, many details, such as cast members both new and old alike, have been a heavily protected secret. There is also no news that disproves the previous update that Robert Pattinson will be joining the cast as Scytale. Of course, we'd rather not count our sandworms before they emerge from the dunes; we can't wait for any updates on this awe-inspiring epic. I've already watched the first three episodes of Prime Video's new action series — and it's no thrill ride

Prime Video's latest original series is "Countdown," an explosive, race-against-time action thriller from "One Chicago" creator Derek Haas and star Jensen Ackles. Viewing the "Countdown" trailer, I was pretty amped. While I'm not hugely familiar with Haas' previous series, I'm always game for a dose of adrenaline, and "Countdown" looked like it'd deliver some thrills. Ahead of the show's three-episode premiere today (June 25), I had the chance to check out the initial drop ... and I've got bad news. I'd hoped that "Countdown" would be a fun, high-octane summer treat on the Amazon streaming service, but after watching these first three episodes, I can't say I'm eager to sit through any more "Countdown" — here's why. The big problem here, simply put, is that "Countdown" is so generic that I quickly found it was washing over me. And given there are 10 more episodes left, well, that's worrying. The series revolves around Mark Meachum (Jensen Ackles), an LAPD detective who is recruited to a secret task force after a Department of Homeland Security officer is murdered in broad daylight. Together with other undercover agents from other branches of law enforcement, Meachum starts to search for the killer. Soon, the task force uncovers a far more sinister plot that leads to a race against time to save the city. As a set-up, that sure sounds like a recipe for a thrilling ride, right? Well, that's not how I feel three episodes in. It's not like "Countdown" is slow-moving, per se; the series opens with a frenetic chase, and there's action and plot reveal woven in pretty regularly to keep things moving along. It's just that what's here isn't fun to watch, and despite that set-up, the story just feels so inert. There's mention of incredibly high stakes (our heroes are trying to prevent a "Chernobyl-level event" from happening in Los Angeles) and that grand terror plot to foil, but the show can't match those stakes. A lot of time is spent watching middling chatter, or cliche storybeats, or exposition dumps. The characters, so far, feel pretty one-note, and even some of the action looks and feels pretty clunky. Despite the ticking-clock premise, it's anything but edge-of-your-seat stuff. Each of these opening episodes ends with a big crescendo moment that I'm sure was designed to have you itching to want to come back for more, but the reality is, "Countdown" is just another average-at-best police procedural that just sucks the fun out of proceedings. While I don't think "boring" is a productive criticism, that's ultimately the way I'd describe Prime Video's new show. And with my interest already wavering from the first three instalments, I can't really fathom what "Countdown" could do to change my mind on that front. Unless you're really going to get a kick out of some of the action sequences or love a gruff, cocksure Jensen Ackles turn, "Countdown" doesn't feel like it's worth the time investment. It's just sort of fine at best, and that's simply not good enough to have me ready to commit to returning week to week for the remaining episodes. Looks like I'm not alone on that front, either; early reviews show "Countdown" is proving divisive. At the time of writing, the show's currently sitting at a 50% score on Rotten Tomatoes, with others also criticizing the show's cliche feel. I'm not one to rag on a show unnecessarily, but honestly, when I was watching "Countdown," the only counting going on was from me, looking at the remaining runtime and wishing for the show to be over. I'm willing to be proven wrong, but the series didn't make a good first impression. And if reading this has put you off "Countdown" and you're now in dire need of some streaming inspiration right now, check out our guide to the best Prime Video shows for tons more suggestions that are more deserving of your time. "Countdown" episodes 1-3 are streaming now on Prime Video.

Eric Dane: My Countdown Task Force Leader Is ‘Unapologetic, Determined' — and Wears the Hell Out of a Suit

In Prime Video's upcoming Countdown thriller, Special Agent in Charge Nathan Blythe proves to be a 'formidable foe' for any ne'er-do-wells — and he looks damn good while doing it! Created by Derek Haas (EP of the #OneChicago franchise and co-creator of FBI: International), Countdown is set in motion when an officer with the Department of Homeland Security is murdered in broad daylight. SAC Blythe (played by Euphoria's Eric Dane) is tapped to head up task force 'Hurricane,' comprised of LAPD detective Mark Meachum (Supernatural's Jensen Ackles), DEA badass Amber Oliveras (All Rise's Jessica Camacho), LAPD gangs unit officer Lucas Finau (Young Rock's Uli Latukefu), and FBI agents Keyonte Bell (The Boys' Elliot Knight) and Evan Shepherd (The Flash's Violett Beane). 'There Are Familiar Aspects,' Says Supernatural Vet The Sandman's Final Season Trailer Features Dream's Return to Hell, Warns 'All Good Stories Come to an End' Though positioned as an 'all-star' team of LEOs, it soon becomes evident that the task force Blythe hand-picked is more a collection of broken toys. 'They don't understand why they work well together…,' Dane told TVLine on Tuesday afternoon, 'but I do.' Blythe himself isn't one to sit behind the desk in his makeshift task force office and simply receive updates. Rather, he involves himself in field work while also doing his damndest to keep District Attorney Grayson Valwell (Merrick McCartha) — an ambitious politico and would-be valor thief — from getting in the team's way. 'I like playing characters that are unapologetic, and determined, and won't back down. And there's a lot of that in Nathan Blythe,' Dane said. 'He's also a very earnest and focused character — I like that about him — but what I really dig about him is the 'stillness' which he sets an example' for the task force's more impulsive members. Ackles, who plays Team Hurricane's most reckless member, described Dane's character as 'a formidable foe for anybody out there trying to make a move,' and a boss who doesn't so much lead by example but 'lead by strength. 'And I love how much he believes in his team,' Ackles added. 'I love that he believes in these people even though they are not the obvious choice.' Describing Meachum et al as 'a ragtag group,' Ackles likened SAC Blythe to 'the coach of the Bad News Bears.' This coach, though, dresses a helluva lot better than Walter Matthau's Morris Buttermaker. When he strides across a tarmac or office plaza, damn, it's like an Armani ad come to life. '[Eric] wears the hell out of a suit!' Ackles declared of his co-star. 'Every time he showed up on the set, I'm like, 'Who makes this? What are you working with here?'' Accepting the compliments from both Ackles and myself, Dane simply said with a smile, 'We have a great wardrobe department.'
