Syracuse prepares for 'No Kings' protest
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR) — Despite tensions heating up from coast to coast, Syracuse Police and event organizers are planning to make Saturday's 'No Kings' protest a peaceful one. 'We are very fortunate to be in a very intimate, small, personable city where we don't seem to see a lot of flare-ups,' Steve Simon, an organizer, said. Sgt. Thomas Blake said that after a month of planning and gathering all the necessary information, they were ready to prepare for the nationwide event. 'There's nothing to indicate that there's any kind of plan for violence at all,' Sgt. Blake said. Syracuse Police expect over 1,000 people to attend on Saturday at the Solar St. parking lots near Destiny USA from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. 'We are prepared,' he said. 'We plan for these things. We reach out to the organizers…just to make sure that it's going to be seamless, find out what they need from us, and then we have a plan in order.' Sgt. Blake said the police presence is not meant to spoil anybody's time during the event. 'We're there to just make sure everybody's being safe and responsible,' he said. Simon is encouraging everyone in Central New York to attend to protest against President Donald Trump's policies on immigration. 'They're acting as if Trump is a king and that's really not an exaggeration,' he said. 'He's trying to act as if he is a king. So, this particular protest day is titled 'No Kings Day' and it's appropriate.' Simon also urged everyone to come out and exercise their First Amendment right to free speech. 'We all believe in the rule of law,' he said. 'You can be a Democrat or a Republican. It doesn't matter which side of the aisle you're from or what your beliefs are, expect you should be supportive of the constitution.' Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Latavius Murray announces new timeline for Jon Diaz Community Center opening, addresses multi-year delay
NEDROW, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Former NFL running back and Central New Yorker Latavius Murray announced on Monday plans for when his community center will finally be built. This comes after years of waiting, along with fundraisers being held for the project. In 2022, he set his sights on building the Jon Diaz Community Center in Nedrow, with the groundbreaking scheduled for 2023. Halfway through 2025, only the floor plan has been completed. 'We're about 99% done with the floor plan, which is a huge step, something a long time coming,' Murray said at a community meeting Monday night. 'We got excited about it, too and I was able to get some funding. Sometimes, I get capital funding that I can allocate around,' May said. 'I was able to get some funding for it. $500,000 for it.' Murray said the reason for the delay was having to wait for grant funds and more donors. 'When you have to apply for grants and get donors, it's a process. It's not easy, but it's something we signed up for and we're gaining momentum now,' he said. 'We're excited about where we are heading.' Now he says the plan is to have the groundbreaking in 2026 and the center open in 2027. 'While we have some goals in mind and things we want to accomplish with timelines, sometimes things change. What's important is keeping the main thing, the main thing, keep progressing, keep focus,' Murray said. 'We've been able to do that and that's why I feel confident in where we're going.' Murray partnered with the Integrated Community Alternatives Network to open an office space in Syracuse. The space will provide social and emotional services to families and children. The space is located at 1010 James Street. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.

Destiny USA owner, Pyramid Management Group, defaults on loans owed for Buffalo-area mall
BUFFALO, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — Syracuse-based Pyramid Management Group, the owner of Destiny USA, has defaulted on a multi-million-dollar loan related to its Walden Galleria mall outside of Buffalo. The lenders filed a lawsuit against Pyramid Management Group in Erie County State Supreme Court on Thursday to initiate the mortgage foreclosure process. The company owed more than $230 million as of April 2022. In May, Pyramid CEO Stephen Congel told Buffalo Business First that he was optimistic about his team's negotiations with the lenders. In early May, representatives for the lenders sent a letter to Pyramid Management Group demanding 'immediate payment in full of the matured indebtedness.' By failing to pay, the letter states, the mall's current owners risk losing rights to manage the property or foreclosure, among other penalties. Spinoso Real Estate Group, also Syracuse-based, has applied to take over management of Walden Galleria as a court-approved receiver. Spinoso took over management of Pyramid's foreclosed Palisades Center near New York City last year. The company lost Champlain Center in Plattsburgh, Hampshire Mall in Massachusetts and Aviation Mall near Lake George. Many worry Destiny USA could be next. Last August, NewsChannel 9 reported Destiny USA was threatened with 'enforcement action' for Pyramid's inability to pay back $430 million in debt for the construction of the mall and its expansion. In a statement last year, the CEO of Pyramid Management Group, Stephen Congel, said, 'We are currently engaged with the special servicer regarding modification of the loan and will continue to provide an exceptional experience for our 17 million annual guests and employees.' Pyramid Management Group has not responded to NewsChannel 9's request for comment related to the pending foreclosure of Walden Galleria. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
