Egypt Interior Ministry kills 2 as it foils terrorist plot by Hasm movement - Courts & Law
Egypt's Ministry of Interior announced Sunday that it had thwarted a terrorist plot by the Hasm movement, killing two suspects during a raid in Giza. Hasm (Determination), short for Harakat Sawa'd Misr (Arms of Egypt Movement), is a militant group that emerged in 2016 and claimed responsibility for a series of attacks targeting security forces, judges, and government officials. It was designated as a terrorist organization by Egyptian authorities in 2017. In a statement, the ministry said that security services had tracked an alleged plan by Hasm to resume its operations by targeting security and economic sites. 'Information was received indicating that leaders of the terrorist group Hasm—the armed wing of the Muslim Brotherhood currently residing in Turkey—were involved in preparing and planning to revive the group's activity and carry out hostile operations targeting security and economic facilities,' the ministry stated. According to the statement, one operative, identified as the fugitive Ahmed Mohamed Abdel Razek Ahmed Ghoneim, had allegedly infiltrated Egypt through desert routes after receiving 'advanced military training in a neighbouring country.' Ghoneim, the ministry added, was previously convicted in multiple terrorism cases, including a death sentence for killing a police officer and life sentences for plotting to assassinate high-ranking officials and targeting the presidential aircraft. 'The plot coincided with the group's production of a video, widely circulated on social media, showing its members conducting training exercises in a desert area in a neighbouring country, vowing to carry out terrorist attacks inside Egypt,' the ministry added. Ghoneim was reportedly staying in an apartment in Bulaq El-Dakrour, Giza, along with another suspect, Ihab Abdel Latif Mohamed Abdel Qader, wanted in connection with an attempted assassination case. During a raid on the apartment, the suspects allegedly opened fire on security forces. The ministry said both men were killed in the ensuing exchange. One security officer was wounded, and a civilian was killed. The National Security Sector, in coordination with other agencies, identified several group leaders allegedly responsible for the plot. These include Yahya El-Sayed Ibrahim Mohamed Moussa, described as a founding figure of Hasm, and four others—Mohamed Rafiq Ibrahim Menaa, Alaa Ali Ali El-Samahi, Mohamed Abdel Hafeez Abdallah Abdel Hafeez, and Ali Mahmoud Mohamed Abdel Wanis—all of whom have been convicted in absentia in terrorism-related cases. Hasm's last known operation was in 2019, when authorities accused it of orchestrating a deadly car bombing near Cairo's National Cancer Institute. Hasm's first known operation was a failed attempt to assassinate Egypt's former Grand Mufti Ali Gomaa during Friday prayers on 5 August 2016, injuring his bodyguard. The group later tried to kill Assistant Public Prosecutor Zakaria Abdel Aziz with a car bomb in September. In November 2016, Hasm also claimed responsibility for the attempted assassination of Judge Ahmed Aboul Fotouh in Nasr City—one of the judges who sentenced former President Mohamed Morsi to 20 years in prison. The group has also been linked to the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood, which Egyptian authorities have accused of providing direction and logistical support for its operations. Ami Maeshima releases first anime opening song for Private Tutor to the Duke's Daughter
Voice actor and singer Ami Maeshima has officially released the music video for her debut anime opening song, 'Wish for you.' The vibrant pop track serves as the opening theme for the Summer 2025 fantasy anime Private Tutor to the Duke's Daughter, where Maeshima also voices the main character, Caren. The music video is now streaming on her official YouTube channel, and the song is available on digital platforms ahead of its physical CD release on July 23, 2025. According to the official announcement via Crunchyroll, the anime is currently streaming worldwide on their platform. Sheikh Mohammed congratulates Reem Al Zarouni, says she outperformed 800,000 students
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, expressed his pride in the 810,000 students from UAE schools who participated in the 9th edition of the Arab Reading Challenge. Sheikh Mohammed congratulated Reem Adel Ahmed Al Zarouni, from Al Ittihad National Private School in Abu Dhabi, for winning the UAE-level Arab Reading Challenge champion title, commending her outstanding achievement and wishing her continued success. Sheikh Mohammed shared on X: "Today, the UAE celebrated 810,000 students from 1,380 schools who participated in the Arab Reading Challenge, which has engaged over 32 million students globally. I thank my brother Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed for his patronage of this important national student initiative. 'Congratulations to Reem Adel Al Zarouni of Al Ittihad National School in Abu Dhabi for her exceptional performance, surpassing 800,000 other students. During the challenge, she read 300 books and demonstrated a remarkable understanding of their content.' The competition involves multiple elimination rounds, culminating in the selection of champions who have read, summarised, and demonstrated comprehension of 50 books. The competition progresses from the classroom to the school, district, and country levels, ultimately leading to the selection of national champions from participating countries, both within the Arab world and internationally. Distinguished champions and schools are selected based on comprehensive, standardised criteria. In the People of Determination category, participants are required to read 25 UAE has consistently demonstrated strong participation and achieved significant milestones in the Arab Reading Challenge. Notably, Amna Mohammed Al Mansouri won the title in the 2023 seventh edition, which saw 24.8 million students from 46 countries participate. Al Ebdaa School - Cycle 1 received the Best School award in the eighth edition, involving over 28 million students from 50 countries. In the fifth edition, with over 21 million participants from 52 countries, Moza Al Ghannah earned the Outstanding Supervisor award. The ninth edition of the Arab Reading Challenge, an initiative of MBRGI, achieved record participation with 32.231 million students from 132,112 schools in 50 countries, guided by 161,004 supervisors. Launched in the 2015-2016 academic year under the direction of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Arab Reading Challenge aims to promote reading among students, within the Arab world as well as globally, and cultivate creative thinking. UAE drives inclusion of People of Determination at COSP18
Commitment to empowering People of Determination During the UAE's national statement at the General Debate, Minister Sana bint Mohammed Suhail affirmed the UAE's dedication to empowering People of Determination. She highlighted their unique abilities and their right to equal opportunities to contribute to national development. She stated, "In the United Arab Emirates, we believe that people with disabilities, or as we call them 'People of Determination', are partners in building the nation..." Six pillars of inclusion supporting People of Determination The Minister outlined the UAE's progress through six key pillars: healthcare, education, employment, social protection, accessibility, and community participation. These pillars are underpinned by a strong legislative framework, including Federal Law No. 29 of 2006, as well as local initiatives such as Abu Dhabi's inclusive urban development and Dubai's Disability Strategy. Notable achievements in education and rehabilitation The UAE highlighted achievements such as the introduction of inclusive learning environments, early intervention programmes, vocational training, and the establishment of over 35 government-run and more than 46 private centres dedicated to rehabilitation and training. Advancements in employment and accessibility The statement emphasised efforts to create inclusive workplaces in both public and private sectors. Infrastructure improvements have made public transport and facilities more accessible, and innovative technologies are being integrated to enhance service accessibility for People of Determination. Comprehensive healthcare and independence support Within healthcare, the UAE offers a wide range of services from treatment and rehabilitation to psychological support. Programs promoting independence, including life skills training and supported living options, are key components of their approach. International leadership and hosting global events The UAE showcased its role on the global stage by hosting major events like the 2024 International Rehabilitation Conference and the 2019 Special Olympics. The establishment of the Asian Paralympic Committee's headquarters in the UAE in 2019 further emphasises the country's regional and international advocacy efforts. UAE delegation reflects national and multi-sector commitment The delegation included representatives from the Ministry of Family, the Executive Council of Dubai, the Department of Community Development in Abu Dhabi, Zayed Higher Organisation for People of Determination, Mohamed bin Zayed Foundation for Humanity, the Asian Paralympic Committee, and Sedra Foundation, collaborating closely with the UAE's Permanent Mission to the UN. Hosting 'The Gathering' – A platform for global dialogue On the sidelines of COSP18, the UAE hosted 'The Gathering,' a cultural and diplomatic event that facilitated dialogue among global stakeholders to exchange ideas on empowering People of Determination. UAE's role as a global leader in inclusion The UAE's participation at COSP18 highlights its leadership in shaping inclusive policies and systems. The diverse delegation exemplified a comprehensive national approach uniting government, third-sector institutions, and the private sector to support People of Determination within an integrated and sustainable framework.
