Lorde's Fourth Album ‘Virgin' Is Finally Here
Lorde's long-awaited fourth album is here. Virgin is available to stream on all platforms now. The Grammy winner's Virgin is the singer-songwriter's first album in four years, following up the indie-folk LP Solar Power. She wrote and produced every song with Jim-E Stack, and the album features additional production and writing from Dev Hynes, Daniel Nigro, and Fabiana Palladino. She first teased the project in April with the single 'What Was That,' a huge arena-pop break-up anthem. Lorde followed the lead single with two more: 'Man of the Year' and 'Hammer.' The writing process began after a transformative few years where she was recovering from an eating disorder and processing the end of her long-term relationship. Lorde was also in a period of self-discovery, realizing the expansiveness of her gender identity during this time, and described the LP's sound as percussive and the lyrics as very physical. 'I think coming more into my body, I came into an understanding of the grotesque nature of it and the glory and all these things,' she explained. 'It's right on the edge of gross. I often really tried to hit this kind of gnarliness or grossness. 'You tasted my underwear.' I've never heard that in a song, you know? It felt like the right way to tell this whole chapter.' This fall, Lorde will embark on her Ultrasound World Tour in support of the album. She will be joined by Blood Orange, the Japanese House, and Nilüfer Yanya on select dates. Lorde just released her first original solo single in four years last month, but 'What Was That' wasn't the only one of her songs to debut on the Billboard Hot 100 after its release. Her Pure Heroine track 'Ribs,' which has become a fan favorite over the years, debuted at Number 99, nearly 12 years after it came out. 'It's crazy that it works on people still,' Lorde told Rolling Stone, during her interview sessions for the magazine's May cover story. 'It's a mystery to me.' She had announced an appearance in the park on April 22nd, but due to the immense size of the crowd, fans were ordered to disperse by the NYPD. In lieu of Lorde's appearance, the lingering audience sung and danced to 'Ribs,' among other songs of hers, in the park. She would post videos of the 'Ribs' moments in particular on her Instagram page. (Those fans who waited would be rewarded when Dev Hynes would plug in his phone to someone's speakers to play 'What Was That' and then again when Lorde would finally join them a couple hours later.) 'I'm now seeing that Virgin has this connection to Pure Heroine, and to this young, brave part of myself. I'm seeing that all these albums have connective tissue,' she said. Lorde announces Ultrasound tour dates in support of upcoming album 'Virgin'
Lorde has officially announced the dates for her Ultrasound Tour, set to kick off in North America and Europe later this year. The announcement, made on May 8 via Instagram, comes ahead of the release of her highly anticipated album Virgin, slated for June 27. The tour will begin on September 17 in Austin, Texas, with shows across the U.S. and Canada, including stops in Chicago, Nashville, Toronto, Boston, New York City, Las Vegas, and Seattle. After wrapping up the North American leg in late October, Lorde will head to Europe for performances in Luxembourg, Paris, London, Dublin, Amsterdam, and Berlin, with the final show in Stockholm on December 9. Lorde expressed her excitement in the post, sharing that she would be bringing along talented artists such as Blood Orange's Dev Hynes, The Japanese House, Nilüfer Yanya, Chanel Beads, Empress Of, and Oklou for select dates. Lorde pops up in New York's Washington Square Park, performs new song after cops shut down surprise show
Surprising her fans, New Zealand-born pop icon Lorde pulled off an impromptu performance in New York's Washington Square Park, on Tuesday night. Earlier that day, she had asked her fans to meet at the park at 7 PM in an Instagram post. By 6:47 PM, a massive crowd gathered at the park, buzzing with anticipation for Lorde's first new single since 2021, What Was That. But just as the excitement peaked, the police stepped in. According to an NYPD spokesperson speaking to PEOPLE, the gathering was halted because the organisers didn't have the proper permits to perform in a public park. 'Officers were alerted of an unscheduled event… Sound and park permits are required… and the individuals were not in possession of either.' Lorde, always gracious, complied, without protest. She posted an update for her fans on her Instagram, saying: 'Omg @thepark the cops are shutting us down,' and followed up with an apology: 'I am truly amazed by how many of you showed up!!! But they're telling me you gotta disperse… I'm so sorry.' But the night wasn't over. In true Lorde fashion, the moment transformed into something even more unforgettable. About two hours later, her longtime collaborator Dev Hynes aka Blood Orange arrived with a speaker and played the unreleased track for a loyal group of fans who'd decided to stick around. Lorde's new single ‘What Was That' to drop tonight after weeks of cryptic messages
Some lucky fans were fortunate to hear a sneak peak of her latest track in New York City but not before police tried to shut it down. Lorde posted on her Instagram and Whatsapp group chat for her fans, telling them to meet her 'in the park at 7pm', with a photo of Washington Square Park. Fans started flooding the park an hour before her appearance, with many sharing photos online of eager fans scaling trees to catch a glimpse of the Royals hitmaker. However, they were left disappointed when Lorde posted again just before she was due to appear, explaining that the police were shutting it down. 'Omg @thepark the cops are shutting us down,' the message read. 'I am truly amazed by how many of you showed !!! 'But they're telling me you gotta disperse ... I'm so sorry.' Lorde's social media revival and the sudden string of cryptic messages sparked excitement and speculation among fans eagerly awaiting new music from the singer. Her last release was her 2021 album Solar Power, her third full-length record since breaking on to the music scene with her hit single, Royals, and the accompanying album, Pure Heroine, in 2013. Since then, Lorde has released a new album every four years.
