Who is Michael McLeod? Former Devils forward accused in Hockey Canada sexual assault trial

Michael McLeod is facing sexual assault charges abruptly halting his NHL career (Getty Images) As the high-profile Hockey Canada sexual assault case continues to unfold, one of the central figures making headlines is 27-year-old Michael McLeod. Once a promising first-round draft pick of the New Jersey Devils, McLeod's NHL career came to a sudden halt in 2024 when he was charged in connection with the alleged 2018 group sexual assault involving members of Canada's World Junior team. Rising through the ranks: From OHL standout to NHL contributor Born in Mississauga, Ontario, Michael McLeod carved out an impressive junior career with the Mississauga Steelheads of the OHL, where he was named team captain and earned OHL Player of the Week honors. Drafted 12th overall by the Devils in 2016, he debuted in the NHL during the 2019–20 season and quickly became known for his two-way play and faceoff strength. By the 2022–23 season, McLeod set a personal best with 26 points in 80 games and helped the Devils eliminate the New York Rangers in the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs, scoring the decisive goal in Game 7. He signed a one-year, $1.4 million extension with the Devils in July 2023. Legal fallout leads to KHL move and career uncertainty McLeod's career trajectory shifted dramatically on January 24, 2024, when he and teammate Cal Foote were granted indefinite leaves of absence from the Devils. 'Devils' Michael McLeod, Cal Foote granted leave as 2018 Hockey Canada investigation heats up,' reported. Just days later, on January 30, 2024, the London Police Service confirmed McLeod had been charged with two counts of sexual assault. 'Lawyer for Mike McLeod confirm to The Athletic he has been charged by London Police,' journalist Ian Mendes posted on X (formerly Twitter). Following his departure from the NHL, McLeod signed with Barys Astana in the KHL before transferring to Avangard Omsk later in the 2024–25 season. Also Read: Who is Carter Hart? The Canadian hockey star accused in the Hockey Canada sexual assault scandal McLeod's case is part of a broader legal storm involving multiple members of the 2018 Canadian World Junior team. With the trial ongoing and reputations under intense public scrutiny, McLeod's hockey future remains uncertain. Once seen as a potential long-term contributor in the NHL, he now plays overseas, with a cloud of legal and moral accountability looming large over his legacy. A déjà vu moment for Indian space odyssey

Call it providence or pure coincidence but June 25 seems to be a day of destiny as regards India from even before it achieved independence. Many spectacular events have unfolded on this very day over the years. On June 25, 1932, India became the sixth team to be granted Test cricket status when it played its first match at Lord's on that historic day. Close to midnight of June 25, 1975, the then President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed proclaimed national Emergency citing 'internal disturbance'. It was to mark a watershed event as India's political landscape underwent a dramatic transformation and gave a new democratic dimension. On June 25, 1983, India rewrote cricketing history by emerging as world champions, when Kapil's Devils upset all calculations and put an end to the hat-trick quest of West Indies by winning the ODI World Cup in a stunning manner. Now 42 years to the day, June 25, 2025, to be precise, an Indian with the tricolour on his shoulders has put the country's name in a league of extraordinary achievers. A distinguished IAF pilot and astronaut, Lucknow's 39-year-old Shubhanshu Shukla scripted history by embarking on a space odyssey along with three others on Wednesday as part of an ISRO-NASA supported commercial spaceflight by Axiom Space that blasted off for a 14-day sojourn to the International Space Station (ISS) from the Kennedy Space Centre in Florida. Incidentally, Shukla is one of four astronauts picked for ISRO's historic Gaganyaan mission, which marks India's inaugural human space flight endeavour. The lift-off at 12.01 pm on Wednesday (after several eleventh hour heart-breaking postponements) took the clock back by 41 years when Hyderabad's very own Rakesh Sharma became India's first man in space. He spent eight days in orbit as part of the then Soviet Union's Salyut-7 space station in 1984. A day after the take-off, Shukla went a notch higher than Sharma when he achieved the distinction of being the first Indian astronaut to have travelled to ISS. Along with three other astronauts, he reached the ISS when the Dragon spacecraft, named Grace, docked with the orbital laboratory at 4:01 pm (IST) on Thursday over the North Atlantic Ocean, marking the climax of a 28 hours flight. Incidentally, Axiom 4 mission heralds the return to space not just for India, but Poland and Hungary as well. Also onboard is the mission commander Peggy Whitson, and mission specialists Poland's Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski and Hungary's Tibor Kapu. If Shukla stirred the emotions of the countrymen with 'Sare Jahan se Achhcha…' while speaking to Indira Gandhi, Shukla's first message from space was equally patriotic. 'The Tiranga embossed on my shoulders tells me that I am with all of you. This journey of mine is not a beginning to the ISS but to India's Human Space Programme. I want all of you to be part of this journey. Your chest, too, should swell with pride... Jai Hind! Jai Bharat!' The October 10, 1985-born history-maker was commissioned into the IAF fighter wing in June 2006. He has an excellent track-record as a combat leader and seasoned test pilot having a mindboggling 2,000 hours of flight experience across aircraft like the Su-30 MKI, MiG-21, MiG-29, Jaguar, Hawk, Dornier and An-32. It is time Indians took a break from wars and conflicts and celebrated the glorious achievements of Shukla, Sharma and Sunita Williams, who set new benchmarks in spacewalk, which redefined 'resilience' during her nine-month stay aboard the ISS. Bravo, India's torchbearers of the extraordinary kind.

Former India Cricketer Slams Ravindra Jadeja: 'His Ineffectiveness Is Going To...'

Last Updated: Sanjay Manjrekar has questioned Ravindra Jadeja's impact against England in the Test series starting June 20 at Leeds. Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has said that Ravindra Jadeja might not be very effective against the England batters and that might be a major issue for India during their five-Test series against England, which begins on June 20 at Leeds, in what is being termed as a new era for Indian cricket. Manjrekar opined that it would be a massive problem for India if Jadeja couldn't make a significant impact with the ball. Manjrekar pointed out that the English batters did a brilliant job against Jadeja when England toured India last year. 'Jadeja's ineffectiveness is going to create problems. Ineffectiveness against the English batters, in the way they play him and played him in India," Manjrekar said while speaking on ESPNCricinfo. Jadeja bagged 19 wickets across eight innings in the five-match home Test series against England in 2024. Manjrekar said that having Kuldeep Yadav besides Jadeja in the playing XI can strengthen the spin attack. 'So, you might just feel that you need some more spin support, but it's unimaginable, in England, first Test, to go with Kuldeep Yadav. But Kuldeep Yadav is such a tempting option and that is where I think with Gautam Gambhir, somebody who'll not go by the book, who knows India might want to have both Jadeja and Kuldeep in their team," Manjrekar said. Jadeja has bagged 21 wickets from 21 innings on English soil in Tests, including two five-fors. Kuldeep, on the other hand, has played only one Test in England. There is the lure of playing the latter, who can turn the ball irrespective of pitches, but Jadeja, despite his shortcomings as a left-arm spinner in SENA nations, is still a solid No. 7 batter. The decisions that head coach Gautam Gambhir takes will define India's cricket philosophy during the next one and a half months. A new skipper, a headstrong coach, some from the old guard and a few fresh faces will be determined to create a compelling narrative during this time when an in-transition India takes on a combustible England. That just three Indian sides, Ajit Wadekar's batch of 1971, Kapil's Devils in 1986 and Rahul Dravid's bunch in 2007, have won a Test series in Old Blighty in the past 90 years does not make for a rosy picture.

Alexander Mogilny's longstanding snub ended with 2025 Hockey Hall of Fame class

The wait is finally over, Alexander Mogilny is finally headed to the Hockey Hall of Fame as a member of the Class of 2025. Mogilny has been one of the biggest Hall snubs since 2009 and is remembered as one of the premier goal scorers during his 16 seasons in the NHL, which included time with the Sabres, Canucks, Devils and Maple Leafs. Through his career, Mogilny recorded 473 goals and 559 assists for more than 1,000 points and was part of hockey history when he became the first Soviet player to defect to play in the NHL back in 1989. 3 Alexander Mogilny of the Devils, during the first period of a 2000 game, was finally elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame.. New York Post The story of Mogilny's defection feels like one right out of a spy novel. He left the Soviet Union team at the 1989 World Championships in Stockholm with the help of Sabres brass, who helped orchestrate the entire episode to get him to Western New York. Mogilny made his NHL debut with the Sabres that fall on Oct. 5, 1989, and began what is now a Hall of Fame career. He set a single-season goal-scoring record for the Sabres during the 1992-93 campaign when he put up 76 goals that year. Mogilny won a Stanley Cup with the Devils during the 1999-00 season after he was traded to New Jersey at the deadline. He also took home a gold medal at the 1988 Olympics as a member of the Soviet team and a gold at the 1989 World Championship. 3 San Jose Sharks center Joe Thornton (19) skates to the puck during the first period of an NHL hockey game against the Arizona Coyotes on Nov. 22, 2017. AP 'I am happy to be part of a great organization like the Hockey Hall of Fame. I want to thank both my Russian and NHL teammates for helping me achieve this honor,' Mogilny said in a statement. Joe Thornton, Duncan Keith, Zdeno Chara, Jennifer Botterill, and Brianna Decker join Mogilny in the player category and Jack Parker and Danièle Sauvageau in the builders category are part of the Class of 2025. Chara bookended his career with the Islanders, who drafted him in 1996 and played for the organization from 1997 to 2001 and was dealt in one of the most debated trades during the tenure of former general manager Mike Milbury. Chara's NHL career, which spanned from 1997 to 2022, also included time with the Senators, Bruins and Capitals. 3 Zdeno Chara #33 of the Boston Bruins celebrates his game-winning goal against the Montreal Canadiens during Game 1 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals of the 2009 Stanley Cup playoffs on April 16, 2009 at the TD Banknorth Garden in Boston. Getty Images He is best remembered for his time in Boston, where he served as captain and helped the Bruins win a Stanley Cup in 2011. Chara played in 1,680 games – the most by an NHL defenseman and third most among any player in the league – and averaged 23:33 of time on ice per game. Chara returned for one final stint with the Isles during the 2021-22 season, scoring a goal in his final game of his career on April 29, 2022. The Hall of Fame induction will take place on Nov. 10 in Ontario.

On This Day In 1983: India Beat England To Reach Historic World Cup Final

Last Updated: On This Day In 1983: India raced to their maiden World Cup final appearance by defeating England in a memorable semifinal played in Manchester, chasing down the target of 213. On This Day In 1983: India continued their inspiring run at the 1983 Prudential World Cup with a memorable semifinal victory over England in Manchester on this day. Kapil Dev's courageous brigade overcame heavy odds staked against them and surpassed Bob Willis' experienced English side considered massive favourites to qualify for the final. Proving the pundits wrong, Kapil's men got the tri-colour flying high at Old Trafford with a brilliant allround performance. After a magnificent turnaround in their campaign with wins over Zimbabwe and Australia that propelled them to the knock-outs stage, the Indians carried confidence and momentum to the semifinal versus the hosts. But they were hardly given a chance to stand the English juggernaut that had the wealth of experience and understanding of the 60-over game in the early years of domestic and international limited-overs cricket. The Englishmen were further boosted by the toss as the coin fell in their favour and Willis decided to bat first. But Kapil's Devils turned the tables on them with a spirited bowling performance. Allrounder Roger Binny (2/42) continued his magnificent form with the new ball, dismissing both of England's set openers Graeme Fowler (33) and Chris Tavaré (32). On a day where the ball swung and seamed, India's battery of medium pacers didn't allow England's middle-order to settle down. The steady Mohinder Amarnath once again came in handy with the ball, taking 2 wickets while conceding just 27 runs off his 12 overs. Kapil then ran through the English tail in his 3 for 35 and helped dismiss the hosts for 213. In the chase, maestro Sunil Gavaskar missed out on an opportunity to regain form as his departure for 25 off 41 broke a useful opening stand of 46 shared with the attacking Krishnamachari Srikkanth, who was out soon for 19. India needed their middle-order to come to the fore and two senior pros Amarnath and Yashpal Sharma did not disappoint. They stitched an exceptional third-wicket stand of 92 runs to bring India's noses ahead before Amarnath was out for 46. The solid-looking Sharma was then joined by the aggressive Sandeep Patil. Batting in contrasting fashions, the duo didn't allow the England bowling unit to create inroads until the match was sealed. Patil went hell for leather, taking confidence from the assurance provided by the calming Sharma at the other end. The Mumbaikar hammered an unbeaten 51 off 32 balls while Sharma produced an important 61 before his wicket. Skipper Kapil walked out and gave the strike back to Patil, witnessing the winning moment where Patil smashed Willis (1/42) to the deep mid-wicket region. The Old Trafford crowd rushed to the ground while Kapil and Patil somehow evaded them in the most jubilant scenes that marked one of the greatest days in Indian cricket history.
