Arizona State football headlines Big 12 preseason team with 5 selections

The Big 12 has eliminated its preseason media poll for the conference but will continue to make preseason all-conference football selections. Arizona State is well represented in those selections. Arizona State QB Leavitt and Texas Tech LB Rodriguez are preseason Big 12 players of year

IRVING, Texas (AP) — Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt and Texas Tech linebacker Jacob Rodriguez were named the preseason Big 12 Conference players of the year on Monday. The Big 12 announced the awards, which are determined by a vote of media members who cover the league, the day before the Big 12 Football Media Days started in Frisco, Texas. There was no preseason poll since the Big 12 discontinued that this year, joining the Big Ten as power conferences without one. The Big 12's move comes a year after then-newcomer Arizona State was picked to finish last in the 16-team league before going on to win the conference championship game. Leavitt completed 216 of 350 passes (61.7%) for 2,885 yards with 24 touchdowns and six interceptions as a redshirt freshman last season when the Sun Devils made the 12-team College Football Playoff in their Big 12 debut. The former Michigan State transfer also ran for 443 yards and five TDs. Rodriguez was the Big 12's leading tackler with 126 total tackles, and his 77 solo stops were also the most in the league. He had 7 1/2 tackles for loss, and all five of his sacks came in Big 12 play. Utah quarterback Devon Dampier, a transfer from New Mexico, was selected as the Big 12's top newcomer. He was the Mountain West Conference leader last season with 3,934 total yards last season, 2,768 passing and 1,166 rushing. ___ AP college football:

College football conference title odds: Big 12 could be most wide-open league again this season

The Big 12 could again be the most wide-open conference in college football. A year after Arizona State and Iowa State played for the Big 12 title after ending the season in a four-way tie with BYU and Colorado, there are five co-favorites to win the conference and eight teams with odds of +1200 or better at BetMGM to get the Big 12's automatic berth in the College Football Playoff. Advertisement Kansas State, Arizona State, Baylor, Texas Tech and Utah are all at +600 to win the Big 12 and four of those teams return their starting quarterbacks from the 2024 season. Avery Johnson is back for K-State, Sam Leavitt returns after a breakout season at Arizona State, Behren Morton is back at Texas Tech and Sawyer Robertson will be the Week 1 starter for Baylor after emerging over the second half of the season. Utah, meanwhile, just wants stability and competency at the QB spot. And average play could go a long way for the Utes. After Cam Rising missed much of the 2024 season due to injury — and medically retired this spring — Utah added former New Mexico QB Devon Dampier via the transfer portal. Dampier was one of the best dual-threat QBs in the country in 2024. He threw for over 2,700 yards while rushing for 1,166 yards and 19 TDs. He averaged 7.5 yards a carry — 0.4 more yards per rushing attempt than he did per pass. After the top five, BYU is at +900. QB Jake Retzlaff is set to return, though a civil lawsuit was filed against him in May over an alleged sexual assault in November of 2023. Retzlaff has not been criminally charged regarding the matter and his attorney has said that Retzlaff is innocent. Advertisement Behind BYU, Kansas and TCU are each at +1200 while Iowa State is at +1400 with Colorado at +1800. The Buffaloes enter 2025 with both Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter in the NFL and a new QB in former Liberty quarterback Kaidon Salter. With Shedeur Sanders gone and Kaidon Salters at quarterback, will Colorado remain competitive in the Big 12 this season? () (Dustin Bradford via Getty Images) With the Big 12 looking like it could be the conference with the most parity in 2025, here's a look at the odds for the other conferences ahead of fall camp. AAC Favorite: Tulane (+200) The Green Wave are the favorites despite losing QB Darian Mensah to Duke in the offseason. Navy is the No. 2 favorite at +325 ahead of Memphis at +550 and UTSA at +700. Defending conference champion Army is at +800 after going 8-0 in conference play before losing to Navy to end the season. Remember, the rivalry game between the two service academies does not count towards the regular season standings. ACC Favorite: Clemson (+120) Advertisement The Tigers are the prohibitive favorites to win their second straight ACC title after stunning SMU a season ago. Clemson was the only three-loss team in last season's College Football Playoff and lost to Texas in the first round. Miami is the No. 2 favorite at +350, while Louisville is at +700. SMU is +900 to win the league after making the playoff in its first season in the ACC. Big Ten Favorite: Ohio State (+190) The defending national champions enter as favorites as they get Penn State at home and Michigan on the road in 2025. The Nittany Lions are +240 to win the Big Ten with Oregon right behind at +350. The Ducks went undefeated in the regular season in 2024 and beat Penn State in the Big Ten title game. Michigan is +650 to win the Big Ten and there's a huge chasm between those four teams and everyone else. USC is the No. 5 favorite at +1800 and no other team has odds better than +4000. Conference USA Favorite: Liberty (+150) Advertisement The Flames are now the perennial favorites to win Conference USA but came up short in a disappointing 2024. Liberty finished fourth in the league behind Jacksonville State, Sam Houston and Western Kentucky. WKU is at +400 to win the league while Jacksonville State is at +800. In between them are FIU and Louisiana Tech at +700. Both the Panthers and Bulldogs lost eight games in 2024. MAC Favorite: Toledo (+250) The Rockets are slight favorites ahead of Buffalo at +300 and defending champion Ohio at +400. The Bobcats beat Miami (Ohio) for the league title in December. The RedHawks are at +900 and just behind Bowling Green at +800. Mountain West Favorite: Boise State (-125) Advertisement The Broncos are the biggest conference favorite in college football despite losing Ashton Jeanty and others to the NFL after a playoff appearance in 2024. UNLV lost to Boise State in the MWC title game a year ago and is at +600. Both San Jose State and Fresno State are at +800. Of the four favorites, only San Jose State will continue in the Mountain West past the 2025 season. The other three schools are off to the Pac-12. SEC Favorite: Texas (+225) The SEC doesn't have the parity at the top of the board that the Big 12 does, but it also has a lot of teams with decent odds to win the conference. Nine teams have odds of +2000 or better to win the SEC as Georgia is the No. 2 favorite behind Texas at +375. Alabama is +500, with LSU at +800 and Ole Miss at +1200. Texas A&M's odds are +1400 while Tennessee and South Carolina are at +1800 and Florida is at +2000. Sun Belt Favorite: James Madison (+320) The Dukes have made a seamless transition to the top level of college football. In three years in the Sun Belt, JMU has gone 27-9 and was 9-4 a season ago. Louisiana is +500 to win the league with Texas State and Georgia Southern both at +600. Marshall, which beat Louisiana in the conference title game a season ago, has conference title odds of +2500 after the departure of coach Charles Huff to Southern Miss and a host of players left the program after Huff wasn't retained.

X CFN, Fiu | CFN Facebook | Bluesky Fiu, CFN 2025 Utah Utes PreviewUtah Offense BreakdownUtah Defense Breakdown Utah Utes Key to the Season Get blasting with the ground game with Devon Dampier taking over at quarterback, the yards will pile up fast. Last year's team went 1-7 when it didn't get to 150 yards on the ground. To put this into perspective, the 2022 team only failed to run for 150 yards once, and over the last two seasons is 10-0 when it does. Utah Utes Key Player Devon Dampier, QB pressure or anything, new guy, but the entire franchise is on Wilson should be better if thrown into the mix again, but Dampier is the one with the upside to take Utah from solid to a team that could actually do some damage in the College Football New Mexico transfer has to avoid the multiple interception games - he had five last year - but Utah fans are in for something special from the guy who ran for 628 yards and nine touchdowns over the final four games last season. Utah Utes Top Transfer, Biggest Transfer Loss Top Transfer In: Wayshawn Parker, RB course the top transfer is Dampier, but Utah needs a back to rumble behind another great offensive front. Parker is a slick back who had a few big moments as a freshman at Washington State, but he'll be leaned on a bit more in the Ute attack. As long as he's averaging over five yards per carry like he did last year, he'll be doing his Transfer Out: Cameron Calhoun, CB is all on upside. Calhoun didn't do anything for Michigan in 2023, but he came up with 21 tackles and nine broken up passes last year for the Utes. He's got NFL talent and No. 1 corner ability, and now he'll be showing it off at Alabama. Utah Utes Key Game Texas Tech, Sept. 20The Big 12 season is loaded with landmines up and down, but the conference opener against Texas Tech will be a huge moment early on in the race. The Red Raiders loaded up through the transfer portal and have a top 20-caliber team. With a trip to West Virginia up next, Arizona State to follow, and then a date at BYU, Utah has to come out last time these two met was in 1973 - a 29-22 Texas Tech win.- 2025 Utah Schedule Breakdown Utah Utes Top 10 Players 1. There's no Ohio State, or Georgia, or any superpower to deal with. Arizona State is a home game, at UCLA is the toughest non-conference game, and while the Big 12 is good from top to bottom, it's not the SEC or the Big Ten. There's still a question mark, though, about whether or not the offense will work and if Devon Dampier's talent and style will translate to playing the Power Five teams on a weekly basis. Warming up for Easter Sunday, few showers graze northern Utah

SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) — Happy Easter Sunday, Utah! Expect a few clouds this morning over northern Utah thanks to a weak system brushing by. Not much moisture with it, but there's a small chance we may see a shower near the Utah/Idaho Stateline early this morning. The system moves out quickly, and by this afternoon we're looking at clearing skies and a return of warmer temperatures. Daytime highs will run about 5 degrees above average, putting the Wasatch Front into the mid 60s with St. George seeing upper 70s. Moisture will increase again late tonight into Monday. Monday kicks off with a weak front, bringing light showers to northern Utah, with the main focus over the northern mountains. Minor snowfall is expected. By the afternoon, the front lifts north and any lingering showers should fade. The valleys will see a few isolated showers with little impact expected. Tuesday looks sunny and dry with a steady westerly flow in place. Temperatures will continue to warm through midweek with highs climbing 5-10 degrees above normal. On Wednesday, another weak system drops into northern Utah, bringing a chance of showers again to northern Utah. Snow levels will hang around 8000 feet, and we're not expecting much precipitation at this point — the system looks relatively dry. By Thursday, a bigger trough out in the eastern Pacific starts to shake things up. This will boost southwest flow over the region, pulling in more moisture and kicking up showers, mainly in the northern mountains. Snow levels rise to around 9000 feet, and snow will be light. Meanwhile, valley temps jump into the 70s and 80s…roughly 15 degrees above normal. There's a chance that active weather could hang on over the weekend as well. Models are still trying to hammer out the details. Stay tuned! Stay informed with 4Warn Weather forecast both on-air and online, we are Good4Utah!
