Proteas coaches will back aggressive style, even if it leads to defeat

From experimental line-ups to switching the batting order and playing more aggressively, the Proteas are showing they are willing to accept losses while building towards next year's T20 World Cup. So mistakes will be made, as was the case on a few occasions in Wednesday's 21-run loss to New Zealand in Harare in their second Tri-Series match. But batting coach Ashwell Prince said he and head coach Shukri Conrad want to ensure players' natural styles come to the fore. 'It's about people going out there, playing on the front foot — by that we mean if being aggressive is your style, then play that way, that is what we try to encourage,' said Prince. Similar thinking has driven the success of the Test side in the past 18 months. Another entertaining innings from Dewald Brevis for the @ProteasMenCSA 🤩🇿🇦 #SAvZIM | #SSCricket — SuperSport 🏆 (@SuperSportTV) July 15, 2025 Prince cited the impact of Dewald Brevis, who in his past two innings scored 76 runs at a strike rate of 217.14. While there was a query about whether it was important for Brevis to make 50 and see out the game, Prince said it was more important to affect the outcome than be worried about personal milestones. 'It's not about getting to 50. It's about playing an innings that can make an impact to win the game. Brevis did that in the first game and he was perhaps on track to do that [on Wednesday], but sometimes it goes for you and others it doesn't.' Brevis made 35 off 18 balls, hitting three sixes, and while he was at the crease South Africa had a chance of beating the Black Caps. Having struck two sixes in the 12th over bowled by Matt Henry, in chasing a third the precocious right-hander was caught off the last ball of the over on the long-on boundary. Rather than chastise for that error, Prince and Conrad are more likely to encourage such endeavour. The Proteas have lost the services of Heinrich Klaasen in the middle order but Brevis' two innings in the triangular series in Zimbabwe, with the form he showed in the SA20, domestically for the Northerns Titans and in a brief stint with the Chennai Super Kings, indicated a readiness to step into Klaasen's position. What he needs is support and he, with other young tyros including Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Kwena Maphaka, must be given time on the international stage. 🇿🇦 Dewald Brevis is hitting his stride and looking sharp ahead of today's clash with New Zealand in the Tri-Nations Series 🏏🔥 #WozaNawe — Proteas Men (@ProteasMenCSA) July 16, 2025 'These guys are talented youngsters. You have to be mindful that they are coming onto the biggest stage at 18 and 19 years old. We need to have patience with these guys, we are fully confident in their abilities and trust them to do their thing,' said Prince. The newly appointed Proteas selection convener Patrick Maroney will in all probability support that mindset. Maroney has worked provincially at the Central Gauteng Lions — serving on the board at the union at one stage — and been a national U-19 selector, where he worked with Conrad and has more than 20 years' experience. Maroney will appoint an independent selector, who with Conrad will be responsible for choosing Proteas squads. Maroney will report to the director of national teams, Enoch Nkwe. 'His deep understanding of the game, combined with decades of experience in talent identification and selection at various levels, makes him the ideal person for the job,' said Nkwe.

Proteas slip against Black Caps in T20 tri-series clash

The Black Caps wrapped up the win with 10 balls to spare. South Africa were crushed on Wednesday, falling in a 21-run defeat to New Zealand in their T20 International tri-series clash in Harare. With the Black Caps picking up two points, they drew clear of the SA team on net run-rate, with the Proteas also holding two points after beating hosts Zimbabwe in the series opener earlier this week. Chasing 174 runs to win against New Zealand, the South African side got off to an explosive start, but they struggled to build partnerships as wickets tumbled throughout their innings. Only three Proteas players reached double figures, led by middle-order batter Dewald Brevis who bashed 35 runs off 18 balls. And they ultimately fell in a convincing defeat, with the Black Caps bowling them out for 152 runs with 10 balls to spare. New Zealand innings Earlier, after being sent in to bat, the Black Caps were led by top-order batter Tim Robinson, who hit a career best 75 not out off 57. And while the Kiwis looked to be struggling at 70/5 in the 10th over, middle-order batter Bevon Jacobs combined well with Robinson. The duo shared an unbroken 103-run stand for the sixth wicket, with Jacobs (playing his first international match) contributing an unbeaten 44 off 30, as they carried their team to 173/5. Kwena Maphaka led the Proteas attack, with the 19-year-old fast bowler taking 2/38, while spinner Senuran Muthusamy (making his T20 International debut) did well to return 1/19 in his four overs. Next up in the tri-series, Zimbabwe will face New Zealand on Friday, and South Africa will compete again on Sunday when they turn out against hosts Zimbabwe.

Test cricket is the pinnacle — Brevis

For any youngster coming up in the pipeline, donning the Proteas Test baggy green is a dream which fuels their ambitions. For 22-year-old batting prodigy Dewald Brevis, that dream became a reality in Bulawayo in June when the explosive batter played in his debut Test at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo. He went on to score an attacking half-century in his first Test innings as he made light work of the Blessing Muzarabani Zimbabwe bowling attack. He was fearless in his shot selection and execution, accessing every corner of the field at will as though he were not on debut. In an exclusive interview with the day after the Proteas sealed a 2-0 series win over Zimbabwe, Brevis opened up for the first time about his Test debut. 'I must say it was very special,' he said. 'Obviously, the half century on debut was really special. 'But for me, to win a series like my first one that I'm a part of, well, in the playing 11, I was a part of the squad in Bangladesh, we won there as well. So that was special. 'But to play and to be a part of this series, especially in your first Test series, it's special. 'I wouldn't have wanted anything else. 'The team played very well, it was a fun few days, and I really enjoyed every moment out there. 'I just realised how special this format is to play in, and it is the pinnacle. 'My special moment would have been when I received the baggie. 'It's still here next to me on my desk in my room. So, I look at it every now and then. 'But it's special. It's a dream come true. 'And I'm glad to be a part of it and can't wait for what the future holds. 'I think definitely I always knew, and I've always had the ambition to play Test cricket. 'It's always been very close to my heart and something that I want. 'What I want to do is play Test cricket. So, I think it will always remain very special for me.' The youngster's half century on debut in the first Test would be the only time he went past the 50-run mark in the two-match series as the Zimbabwe bowling attack got the better of him. With that in mind, Brevis embraces that he still has a lot to learn and is motivated to keep honing his red-ball skills with the hopes of breaking into the full-strength Proteas Test team. 'I think it's very important to always know that there's always room to improve. 'You always learn, no matter how old you are, how long you've played. 'That's the beauty of cricket — you can always get better. 'That's what I always strive for. So, I've learnt a lot in this. 'The key thing for me is I really enjoyed it. 'For me, the main thing is I want to just be the original Dewald who plays, and sometimes you need a tiny bit of patience to really succeed in your own way. 'I know every time I've been out there, maybe there's a few small little errors, but I've played how I need to play and how I want to play, but I can, and I know I'll only become better the more I play and the more you have a feel for it. 'But it was very special, and I really enjoyed every moment.' —
