Velloor Co-operative Bank officials booked in wealth case
Kochi: The Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) special cell in Ernakulam registered cases under the Prevention of Corruption Act against two former officials of the Velloor Co-operative Bank in connection with amassing wealth disproportionate to their known sources of income. The accused are SG Dhananjayan (64), former bank secretary and a resident of Velloor village in Vaikom taluk and Liji Thankappan, former junior clerk, residing in the same locality. The investigation, initiated based on a complaint by the bank's president, revealed that during his tenure as secretary, Dhananjayan acquired assets worth Rs 68.03 lakh and incurred expenses of Rs 1.22 crore, far exceeding his legitimate income. Similarly, Thankappan was found to have accumulated assets worth Rs 44.09 lakh and incurred expenses of Rs 12.90 lakh, of which Rs 14.37 lakh was deemed excessive in comparison to her income. Following preliminary inquiries, raids were conducted on Wednesday at the residences of both accused under the direction of VACB superintendent of police AJ Sojan IPS. The raids, led by inspectors Arun Kumar J.P. and Hani HL, resulted in the seizure of various documents, assets, and cash allegedly linked to the disproportionate wealth. The vigilance officials clarified that investigation into the source and legality of the seized items is ongoing. |
