Phone falls in well, 3 men of family die trying to retrieve it

1 2 3 Agra: Three members of a family from Shikohabad in Uttar Pradesh's Firozabad district died from inhaling toxic gas after one of them entered an old well to retrieve a mobile phone and the other two followed in an attempt to rescue him, police said on Wednesday. The incident occurred around 1pm on Tuesday in Nagla Pohpi village. The men were sitting on the edge of the unused well when one of their mobile phones fell in. Dhruv Kumar, 22, was the first to enter the well to recover the device. When he did not return after 30 minutes, his cousin Ajay Kumar, 25, followed. When both failed to come back, their uncle, Chandraveer Singh, 28, descended in an attempt to help. When none of them resurfaced, locals alerted authorities. SHO Shikohabad Police Station, Anuj Kumar Rana, told TOI that a team from the fire department launched a rescue operation using oxygen cylinders after being informed of the incident. After over four hours, all three men were pulled out around 5.30pm and taken to District Joint Hospital Shikohabad, where doctors declared them dead. Local residents alleged delays occurred as the rescue personnel struggled with methane buildup and leaking oxygen cylinders, preventing the victims from receiving medical attention during the critical hour of need. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The operation resumed once alternative cylinders were arranged. SDM Shikohabad Gajendra Pal Singh said, "The post-mortem examination confirmed that the cause of death was the inhalation of poisonous methane gas." He added that all three were farmers from economically weak families, and an ex-gratia amount of Rs 4 lakh has been announced for each of the deceased's families. Dhruv is survived by his wife, while Ajay and Chandraveer leave behind their wives and two children each.
