Two steal Rs5L cash from bizman's car in Pune

Pune: A businessman (32) registered a complaint with the Loni Kalbhor police stating that two men stole Rs 5 lakh from his car at Kunjirwadi around 3pm on Friday. Senior inspector Rajendra Panhale of Loni Kalbhor police on Saturday said Saurabh Dhumal, a resident of Kunjirwadi, runs an import and export business of small plants to foreign countries. Dhumal withdrew Rs 5 lakh from a public sector bank as he wanted to travel to Germany for business purposes in the next few days. Panhale said Dhumal, along with his brother, later reached a food joint to have snacks. They parked the car in the parking premises and kept the cash packed in a cloth bag in the dashboard. Upon returning to the car, Dhumal found the driver's side window was broken and the cash was gone. He informed the police about the theft and a team reached the spot to launch investigations, he said. Analysis of CCTV cameras from the bank to the food joint stall revealed that two men chased Dhumal's car and stole the cash bag minutes after he parked the vehicle. He stated that the police were working on certain clues to establish the identity of the suspects.

Bengaluru stampede: BCCI insists it had 'no knowledge' of RCB's celebration, will take steps to prevent another tragedy

RCB's victory celebration following their maiden IPL title took a tragic turn on Wednesday as a stampede broke out outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, leaving 11 dead and 47 injured. The BCCI maintains it had nothing to do with the event, but will take steps to prevent a similar tragedy in the future. read more Shoes lie scattered outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, where a stampede broke out during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru title celebration that left 11 dead and 47 injured. Reuters Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman Arun Dhumal has maintained that while the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was unaware of Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) victory celebration on Wednesday that later turned deadly, it will be conducting an investigation and will plan steps to ensure such a tragedy does not occur in the future. The victorious RCB team celebrated its maiden IPL title at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, their home ground in Bengaluru, on Wednesday – a day after their six-run victory over Punjab Kings in the final in Ahmedabad. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The celebration, however, quickly turned tragic as a stampede broke out outside the 32,000-capacity stadium, where a massive crowd had gathered to catch a glimpse of Virat Kohli, captain Rajat Patidar and other members of the title-winning team, leaving 11 dead and 47 injured. 'We have taken note and will see that such incidents never happen again. We had no knowledge of any victory parade or any celebrations taking place in Bengaluru. We had no idea who organised it and how so many fans came there. We will look into the matter,' Dhumal told news agency Asian News International. BCCI secretary Saikia says Bengaluru stampede an 'eye-opener' BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia echoed Dhumal's views, adding that while the board has no control over a franchise's celebrations, the stampede at Chinnaswamy certainly was an 'eye-opener' and should serve as a lesson for the Royal Challengers along with every other franchise in the IPL. 'This is eye-opener and we have to think about what we should do in such situations. There will be a winner every year and there will be a celebration in their home city. So we have to learn a lesson so it doesn't happen in the future. At this moment, the BCCI has no control over private celebrations of a franchise,' Saikia told The Indian Express. 'Yesterday (Tuesday), we had 1,32,000 people at the Narendra Modi Stadium. We took care of every minor detail about safety and crowd management, and there was not a single incident even though all the stands were full. There was proper policing and control. Something went terribly wrong today in Bengaluru, but the BCCI has no role to play,' he added. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD After offering condolences over the tragic incident, RCB announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the families of the victims, which is also the amount announced by Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. RCB's victory celebrations was also supposed to include an open-top bus parade from the Vidhana Soudha to the Chinnaswamy Stadium, which would have covered a distance of a kilometre. Bengaluru Police, however, denied permission for the parade but allowed the felicitation event at the Chinnaswamy to go ahead. The Siddaramaiah government has since suspended the Bengaluru Police Commissioner and other top police officials in the aftermath of the tragic incident and has also ordered an investigation, the report of which is expected to be ready in a couple of weeks' time.

'How can BCCI be held responsible?': IPL chairman says board had 'no control' as stampede hits RCB's Bengaluru event

The BCCI has clarified that it had no role in organising the Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) post-title celebration in the city, which turned tragic after a stampede outside the venue left at least 11 people dead and nearly 50 injured. RCB's victory in IPL 2025 ended an 18-year drought and brought the city to a standstill. Thousands of fans gathered outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium to celebrate the historic win, but the sheer volume of the crowd overwhelmed the arrangements, leading to chaos and fatalities. The event, however, continued inside the packed stadium despite the tragedy unfolding just outside. IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal expressed deep sorrow over the incident but was firm in stating that the BCCI could not be held accountable. 'It is sad and tragic. The celebrations turned into a tragedy. Our heartfelt condolences go to the families who lost their loved ones. For the BCCI, the IPL concluded last night. We had no knowledge of such an incident occurring, so how can we be held responsible for it?' Dhumal told India Today. He also pointed out the lack of involvement or presence of IPL officials during the event. 'How can we be held responsible for something like this? It is indeed a very tragic incident, and we extend our deepest condolences. But we cannot be held accountable for something over which we had no control. I am not certain if the stampede occurred directly outside the stadium—I have no specific knowledge of that. Have you seen any IPL officials present at the gate, managing the crowd or facilitating the players' entry?' asked Dhumal. Dhumal revealed that upon learning of the incident, he contacted RCB officials and asked for the event to be wrapped up. "Have I been in touch with RCB officials? Yes, as soon as I was informed about the incident, I spoke to them. They told me they were inside the stadium and had no knowledge of what was happening outside. Based on that conversation, I was told they immediately called off the event," Dhumal added. Earlier, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia had also issued a response on the tragedy. 'I think there were some lapses. The BCCI has no role in it. But it's a lesson to learn. We will look into forming new rules for such victory celebrations going forward,' Saikia had said.

He also noted that the broadcaster was on course to reach 500 million broadcast audiences. "We are attracting new audiences through regional commentary. There has been a growth in female and kids' viewership for the IPL. We are also finding traction in overseas markets," Dhumal believe that RCB's victory marks a refreshing shift in the league's competitive landscape, breaking the long-standing dominance of Chennai Super Kings, Mumbai Indians, and Kolkata Knight Riders, who have collectively won 13 of the previous 18 editions."A notable development this IPL season was the qualification of two long-standing teams, RCB and PBKS, for the final - with RCB securing their first-ever title. However, the momentum of the tournament was somewhat affected by the week-long suspension due to geopolitical tensions, which led to a dip in viewership and a noticeable decline in advertiser presence during the final stages," said Ajimon Francis, MD, Brand Finance BCCI suspended the tournament on May 9 for a week due to the India-Pakistan military conflict. Punjab Kings, having historically remained lower on the brand value charts, may experience a significant uplift following their strong performance. In contrast, established teams like CSK and KKR could see a slight decline in brand value due to early exits and underwhelming campaigns," he also highlighted the rise of uncapped Indian players like Sai Sudharsan and Vaibhav Suryavanshi, which helped reduce franchise dependence on marquee international stars."This shift bodes well for the league's future, as emerging local talent resonates more with younger audiences-an important demographic for long-term growth," he notable trend was the growing preference for Indian captains, even those not currently part of the national team. "Franchises are recognising that local leaders often connect better with regional fans and sponsors than high-profile overseas players," Santosh said.
