Angels' massive fireworks blunder leaves fans fuming

The Angels celebrated for the wrong team. On Saturday night, Eugenio Suarez swatted his second solo home run of the night in the fourth inning for a 2-1 lead in Anaheim. While the dinger was nothing out of the ordinary for the slugger, what happened immediately after sure was. The pyrotechnics crew at Angel Stadium set off fireworks for the hard-hitting Diamondbacks third baseman, a show normally reserved for only the home team. Angels fans were understandably livid, showering the stadium with boos as Suarez trotted around the bases. Fans immediately began to clown the Angels organization for the dazzling blunder. 'Someone's getting fired over that,' one fan wrote on X, while another questioned if Angel Stadium had seen such a blunder before — which it has. Diamondbacks' Eugenio Suárez, right, celebrates with third base coach Shaun Larkin, left, after hitting a home run against the Los Angeles Angels. AP Almost a year to the day prior, fireworks went off in the bottom of the ninth with the home team in the process losing 11-0 to the Mariners. In August 2022, the team's minor league affiliate had its fireworks show go horribly awry when the combustibles fired into the stands, sending fans running. The errors have likely not helped foster good feelings around a franchise that has not made a postseason appearance since 2014 and is without a playoff series win since 2009 despite having the likes of Mike Trout, Shohei Ohtani and Albert Pujols on their roster at points during the drought. Entering the 2025 All-Star break, the Angels sit at 47-49, second-to-last in the American League West with a seven-game cushion ahead of the Athletics and almost assuredly set to stretch their postseason-less streak to another year. There is some hope for the future — 23-year-old first baseman Nolan Schanuel has a .764 OPS with a 1.4 WAR while 26-year-old pitcher Jose Soriano is also having a solid season with a 1.8 WAR — but seemingly plenty of time to get the fireworks situation sorted out in the meantime.

Padres star Manny Machado records milestone 2,000th career hit in loss to Diamondbacks

San Diego Padres star third baseman Manny Machado recorded his 2,000th career hit in the team's 6-3 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday at Petco Park. Machado, 33, had three hits in the loss. His first, and the 1,999th of Machado's career, came in the first inning when he laced a line drive to left field off Diamondbacks' starting pitcher Zac Gallen. The six-time All-Star didn't waste any time getting his 2,000th hit. In his next at-bat, Machado ripped a hanging breaking ball off the glove of Diamondbacks' shortstop Geraldo Perdomo to become the 297th player in MLB history to have 2,000 hits. Machado became the fifth active player with 2,000 hits and the 12th player in MLB history to have 350 home runs and 2,000 hits by his age-32 season. The star infielder tipped his hat to the standing crowd while he stood on first base. Machado's 2,001st hit of his career came in the eighth inning, when he hammered a slider into the left field bleachers for a solo home run, his 15th home run of the season, to cut the Diamondbacks' lead down to 6-3. "It's special and an honor to be a part of that list," Machado said of being in the 2,000 hit-club. "Definitely would have wanted the victory, but stepping away from that, it's pretty cool." The two-time Silver Slugger was glad to achieve the feat in front of Padres fans. "Doing it in front of the home crowd definitely is a lot better, and hopefully there's more," Machado said. Machado made his debut with Baltimore in 2012 and got 977 hits with the Baltimore Orioles before being traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 18, 2018. He had 73 hits with the Dodgers before signing as a free agent with the Padres on Feb. 21, 2019. He has 950 hits with the Padres, which ranks fifth on the franchise list. Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn had 3,141 in his 20-season career. Machado was voted the starting third baseman for the National League All-Star team this year as he in the midst of another strong season. Machado has a .293 batting average to go along with 15 home runs and 53 RBI while he continues to shine defensively at third base. Diamondbacks place infielder Ildemaro Vargas (foot) on 10-day IL

Jun 26, 2025 02:10 AM IST The Arizona Diamondbacks' list of injured players this season grew longer with the placement of infielder Ildemaro Vargas on the 10-day IL on Wednesday because of a fractured fifth metatarsal in his right foot. HT Image Vargas was hit on the foot by a pitch from the Chicago White Sox's Mike Vasil during the second inning of the visiting Diamondbacks' 4-1 victory on Tuesday. In a corresponding move, Arizona recalled infielder Blaze Alexander from Triple-A Reno. The Diamondbacks' recent injuries also include third baseman Eugenio Suarez, who was hit on the right hand by a pitch during a game on Monday against the White Sox and sustained a contusion. X-rays were negative on Suarez, who sat out games on Tuesday and Wednesday. The ballclub plans to have him undergo an MRI once the swelling in the hand goes down. Arizona first baseman Josh Naylor was also injured Monday with a right shoulder strain and missed Tuesday's game before playing on Wednesday. All- Star outfielder Corbin Carroll was hit on his left wrist on June 18 and went on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday (retroactive to Saturday) with a chip fracture. Vargas, who initially replaced Suarez in the lineup, is batting .286 (8-for-28) with one home run and four RBIs in 10 games. The 33-year-old is a career .247 hitter with 18 homers and 130 RBIs in 430 games for five organizations. He started his major league career with the Diamondbacks from 2017-20 before returning during the 2021 season and this year. Alexander, 26, appeared in 61 games with Arizona in 2024 and batted .247 with three homers and 21 RBIs. He was batting .284 with eight homers and 41 RBIs in 54 games for Reno this season. --Field Level Media

Regulations say it should be red on each end, white in the middle with a red maple leaf. Yet, for some reason on the @Canada X account with 1.1 million followers, a flag was posted with the red ends in rainbow colours which are synonymous with the Pride month of June. But this doesn't mention Pride. And Pride Toronto doesn't seem to know anything about it. This was not them. It appears it was somebody within Global Affairs Canada. It's your day to discover and acknowledge the beauty of you and your unique capabilities. It's also an invitation to celebrate everyone's differences.' In this case it seems to celebrate desecrating Canada's flag. When I was in Afghanistan, I certainly didn't see the brave troops having alternative flags. They were proud of the one they were serving under. Needless to say, many Canadians didn't like this new version. Article content Article content 'I'm pretty sure the Canadian flag already represents this. They didn't have to desecrate our flag,' said Ryan Gerritsen William Vaughan Bedell wrote, 'Hey @Canada it is really inappropriate to deface the #MapleLeaf. It is incredible sad that the Gov't of Canada has such a lack of respect for our national flag.' So what does the @Canada account run by the federal government have to say about it? They haven't responded to requests for comment. 'Side note, they turned off their comments,' added Gerritsen. Prime Minister Mark Carney — who has certainly shown his love for Canada's traditions which included inviting the King for the throne speech and introducing the Canada Strong pass for the summer, plus by committing to rebuild Canada's proud military — may have to call his bureaucrats since he has been trying to bring Canada back in vogue himself from the leftover Trudeau staffers who seemed to hate the country. Article content Ford, meanwhile, has also been trying to signal this new time of patriotism – first by taking the wood covering away from Canada's first prime minister, Sir John A. 'Let's all come together to celebrate our incredible country: The true north, strong and free!' Sure there's big problems ahead and there should be debate on who's responsible and how to fix it.
