Florida isn't known for its barbecue but which Sunshine State city still makes the best? See ranking

While Florida might be known more for its key lime pie, Cuban sandwiches and stone crabs, is it also a hot spot for barbeque fanatics? LawnStarter, a lawn service company with locations throughout the U.S., conducted a national survey to find the best towns for barbecue. Unlike some other states, Florida doesn't exactly have a distinct style of barbecue. However, according to Dickey's Barbecue Pit blog, the Sunshine State might have some BBQ favs. "In Florida, the most popular type of barbecue is smoked pork. This meat is cooked low-and-slow over oak wood for a smoky flavor and then served with a tomato-based sauce that's sweet and tangy from ingredients like molasses or honey," the website writes. The four most prominent regional styles are Texas, Memphis, Carolina and Kansas City. Kentucky, St. Louis and Alabama also have popular variations of barbecue. Central Florida's Orlando reigns supreme for barbecue, placing 17th out of 476. It beat cities such as Atlanta, New Orleans, Philadelphia and Louisville. Orlando received high scores for access, consumer satisfaction and elite BBQ memberships. In total, there were 37 Florida cities featured in the list of 476 locations: 17 - Orlando 20 - Miami Beach 27 - Daytona Beach 29 - Miami 36 - Jacksonville 55 - Tampa 56 - Homestead 66 - Fort Myers 67 - Lakeland 68 - Clearwater 69 - Tallahassee 74 - Kissimmee 99 - Deltona 111 - Palm Coast 119 - Gainesville 157 - Port St. Lucie 180 - Hialeah 182 - Cape Coral 202 - West Palm Beach 206 - Hollywood 221 - Sunrise 231 - Pompano Beach 241 - Boca Raton 245 - Largo 250 - Melbourne 251 - Boynton Beach 254 - Palm Bay 266 - Fort Lauderdale 270 - St. Petersburg 292 - North Port 298 - Davie 309 - Pembroke Pines 320 - Doral 339 - Plantation 345 - Lauderhill 357 - Deerfield Beach 416 - Miami Gardens LawnStarter highlighted barbecue hotspots not located in the top cities. Three Florida spots were mentioned: Homestead, Florida (No. 56) - Shiver's BBQ Fort Myers, Florida (No. 66) - JonesEZ BBQ and Big Nick's Barbecue Of course, Missouri's Kansas City was declared the best of barbecue. "With a history going back to the early 1920s, the self-proclaimed BBQ Capital of the World continues to smoke all contenders from the restaurant scene to the competitive sphere," the survey writes. According to LawnStarter's 2025 BBQ ranking, here are the top 10 cities in the U.S.: Kansas City, Missouri Los Angeles, California Houston, Texas St. Louis, Missouri Austin, Texas Chicago, Illinois Las Vegas, Nevada Memphis, Tennessee Nashville, Tennessee New York, New York According to LawnStarter, researchers calculated scores out of 100 points for each city and factor to determine its ranking. "A city's overall score is the average of its scores across all factors and categories. The highest Overall Score ranked 'Best' (No. 1) and the lowest 'Worst' (No. 476)," LawnStarter said. Researchers weighed several metrics to determine the ranking. Here are the metrics: BBQ establishments (the number of barbecue vendors or smokehouses) Average consumer rating for BBQ establishments Average number of reviews per BBQ establishment Number of top-rated BBQ establishments (4.5 plus and 10 plus reviews) Competition awards, such as the National Barbecue and Grilling Association Number of elite BBQ memberships in the Kansas City Barbecue Society and the NBBQA Contributing: Sarah Moore, Lansing State Journal This article originally appeared on The Daytona Beach News-Journal: Florida barbecue cities rankings.
