Oldest society of its kind in the world to host summer show this month
AN ANCIENT society will be holding its annual show next weekend in York.
The Ancient Society of York Florists will be holding its Summer Show at Wigginton Recreation Hall on Saturday July 12.
The society is the oldest horticultural society in the world, having been formed 257 years ago, and includes classes for fuchsias, geraniums, sweet peas, floral themed art, baking, handicrafts and photography.
Its first show was held in Colliergate, where six florists' efforts were accepted, with a plaque above Barnitts still honouring its beginnings.
There is a total of 119 different awards set to be given out next weekend with highlights including the Digby Frank Cup, National Sweet Pea Society, and the Pamela Inns Memorial Trophy.
The show opens at 11am and finishes at 3 with a £1 admission free charged. A full schedule events is available online:
