$500k move may be first step to clearing $57 million, former All-Pro from Cowboys' books
When the Dallas Cowboys signed All-Pro cornerback Trevon Diggs to a five-year, $97 million extension in July of 2023, it was initially hailed as a big win for the franchise. After logging 14 interceptions over the previous two seasons, some speculated Diggs would reset the cornerback market as an elite ballhawk and generational playmaker. Yet the Cowboys kept in line with current market values, proactively inking Diggs to a team friendly contract at a time Dallas' contracts lacked both timeliness and thriftiness. With negotiations approaching for Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb, it was good for the Cowboys to get one in the win column before all the deadlines backed them into a corner. Diggs' deal included over $43 million in total guarantees but came with escape hatch following the 2025 season if things went south. Low and behold things did go south for Diggs and the Cowboys might have just taken their first step in their approach to move away from Diggs and the $57 million he's owed from 2026 onward. The Cowboys are reportedly planning to withhold $500,000 in base salary after Diggs failed to complete at least 84 percent of his offseason workouts with the team over the offseason. This isn't the first time Diggs' commitment to rehab was called into question. Just this spring Jerry Jones offered some rather pointed comments regarding Diggs' approach to his previous rehab. Since signing his $97 million extension two summers ago, Diggs has played in just 13 games. He played just two regular seasons games before falling to a season ending ACL injury in 2023 and he played in just 11 games in his return to the field a season later. His most recent surgery, a chondral tissue graft, is a form of microfracture surgery that involves an uncertain timeline and uncertain final prognosis. It's unknown how much time he'll miss in 2025, or if being 100% is even an option anymore. His medical situation coupled with his absenteeism probably isn't doing him many favors in the Cowboys front office these days. Recouping half a million dollars is sure to ruffle some feathers in Diggs' camp. It could serve as a wake-up call to the 26-year-old, or it could drive a wedge between the two parties. With fellow All-Pro CB DaRon Bland set to hit free agency in 2026, it was always going to be difficult to pay both star CBs high-end money. The Cowboys could be gearing up to cut Diggs and re-up with Bland over the offseason. Cutting Diggs in 2026 would give them $12,558,822 in cap savings next year. It's money that could either get immediately invested in Bland or money that could be moved into a different direction entirely. A lot can change between now and next offseason, but for Diggs this looks like the first step to a final season with the Cowboys. Report: Cowboys dock Trevon Diggs $500,000 for not rehabbing with the team enough
Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs will lose $500,000 from his base salary for not rehabbing at the team facility enough. Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News reports the Cowboys will enforce the de-escelator in Diggs' contract that stipulated he participate in 84.375 percent of the offseason program at the team facility. Thus, Diggs' base salary will go from $9 million to $8.5 million for 2025. The team had the option of not enforcing the clause, and Diggs is believed to be the first Cowboys' player to see his base salary lowered because of it. Dallas places base-salary de-escalator clauses in its large contracts, all but guaranteeing participation in the offseason program. Diggs tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during a Week 3 practice in 2023. Diggs now is rehabbing the same knee after chondral bone graft surgery Jan. 23, which entails transplanting pieces of bone tissue into the joint to stimulate growth. He could miss most or all of the 2025 season. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones publicly rebuked Diggs for his previous rehab, which was away from the team facility. Diggs, a two-time Pro Bowler who led the NFL with 11 interceptions in 2021, has played only 13 games the past two seasons with three interceptions.

Cowboys Source Issues Three-Word Truth On Diggs Rumors
Cowboys Source Issues Three-Word Truth On Diggs Rumors originally appeared on Athlon Sports. FRISCO - We've done the analysis. When it comes to Trevon Diggs' time with the Dallas Cowboys, there are three options being thrown out there. Advertisement Trade him. Cut him. Hope for him. We will concede that the 51st overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft has been a success story in many ways here ... it's been a while since the playmaking Diggs has lived up to expectations. That is mostly due to the fact that he has sustained back-to-back season-ending injuries to that troublesome left knee ... and some people here inside The Star also think it's due to a previous lack of intensity when it came to his rehab. But ... He is a two-time Pro Bowler and was a First-Team All-Pro in 2021 ... at a time that was pre-injury and a time loaded with his record-setting ability to grab interceptions. Advertisement Can that all happen again? As we have illustrated here, the Cowboys can "escape hatch'' their way out of his contract in a reasonably affordable way after the completion of the 2025 NFL season. Do it next offseason and they save about $12.5 million while they carry a dead cap hit of just under $6 million in 2026. Or, better yet, they could designate him a post-June 1 release, saving $15.5 million and then can spread the dead cap of $6 mil over the 2026 and 2027 seasons at a little under $3 mil per year. Trade? If Diggs' injuries keep him from returning to the field at some early stage this year (Trevon has targeted Week 1 for his comeback, unrealistic as that sounds), and if the rehab prevents him from returning to form in 2025 ... Advertisement Why would anybody want to trade for him? That leaves ... "hope'' ... and indeed, internet memes aside, "hope'' is pretty much the plan.'' So, a source tells "We will wait.'' Wait on the rehab. Wait on cutting him. Wait on panicking. Wait. Hope. The fact that fellow DaRon Bland is entering the final year of his rookie contract in 2025 plays into this; maybe Dallas simply transfers its investment from Diggs to Bland. The possible play of rookie Shavon Revel (also rehabbing) is a factor, too. If he becomes a starting-caliber corner, Diggs' importance here shrinks. But that's for later. For now? Dallas Cowboys Fans Worrying About Trevon Diggs Decision Danger
Dallas Cowboys Fans Worrying About Trevon Diggs Decision Danger originally appeared on Athlon Sports. FRISCO - "Ninety percent of success,'' someone once said, "is showing up.'' We're about to see if allegedly wayward Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs is prepared to heed that advice. Advertisement The five-year star-quality pro has continued his rehab of a surgically repaired left knee ... but he has done so in Miami. When head coach Brian Schottenheimer addressed us this week, he made it clear that all parties appear to be on the same page here. He noted that he has spoken with Diggs, who has checked in with team doctors. "Our understanding is he's getting the work done and he'll be back in, and we'll get a good look at him next week'' at minicamp,'' Schottenheimer said, applying a most positive spin. But ... Make no mistake, the wish from the Cowboys side is for Diggs to perform his rehab with the team. Advertisement This situation has a similar feel to last offseason when the Cowboys harbored some frustrations with Diggs' approach to his ACL rehab. What's different now? According to a stipulation in Diggs' contract, he is in danger of losing $500,000 by virtue of his continued absence from the Cowboys' offseason program. To avoid the fine, he must participate in 84.375% of the club's activities, according to ESPN. Diggs has missed the first two phases in the offseason program and has yet to take part in OTAs. Those are in fact voluntary, but the team's mandatory minicamp is set to begin on June 10 and run through June 12. Advertisement Absence from those dates would also draw a separate fine. So Diggs is in some decision danger here. And yes, Cowboys fans have a right to be worried. Is he trying to be just a bit rebellious because Jerry Jones questioned his commitment last time around? Was Jerry right then? Have things changed for the better now? The Cowboys certainly want him back around the team headquarters despite the near certainty that Diggs will start the season on the PUP list. "We won't have a feel for when he's going to be able to get in the middle of everything until we get to training camp when we're with him day in and day out and see how he's progressing," Stephen Jones said. Advertisement Forget about cutting him and forget about trading him. The Cowboys just want to see him. Diggs' limited availability over the last two seasons has been a thorn in the Cowboys' side especially after the $20 million APY extension they signed him to before the 2023 campaign. However these coming weeks unfold, the Cowboys' ultimate goal is to get Diggs back on the field and ready to compete at a high level again.
