Digital India: Ten transformative years

The Digital India Mission, which completed 10 years this month, has changed the way business is conducted and life is lived for millions of Indians. It was launched to improve governance and help technology reduce the distance between governments and the people. It is still a work in progress, but it is not an exaggeration to say that the digital initiative has made a greater impact, in a significantly shorter period, than most other policy-backed programmes. Internet penetration has risen from 250 million in 2014 to over 970 million two years ago. All forms of digital payments have seen explosive growth. Over 8,375 crore UPI transactions worth Rs 139 lakh crore were processed in 2022-23, having risen from 92 lakh crore transactions in 2017-18 – the figure must be much higher now. The UPI has enabled over a hundred billion real-time transactions in a benefitted in many ways when financial transactions, including direct benefit transfer (DBT), became easier and faster. DBT has helped facilitate the transfer of Rs 44 lakh crore directly to citizens, saving Rs 3.48 lakh crore in leakages in the process. The government became more effective, losses and slippages came down, and the reach of the financial system expanded. Apart from finance, the digital shift effected major changes in transport and communications, health, education, industry, agriculture, and entertainment – all sectors found new ways of doing things. Over 42 lakh km of optical cables have been laid, and over 4.8 lakh 5G base stations have been set up. High-speed internet is available in many inaccessible areas. E-governance and digital literacy have helped the country achieve greater levels of transparency and the country needs to go much farther on the digital road, and there are more challenges to overcome. There is a big rural-urban divide in access to digital services and the quality of services. According to the National Sample Survey, 66% urban households have access to quality internet, but only 24% rural households have this access. While 50% of women living in rural areas do not have a mobile phone, only about 57% of the schools have functional computers, and only 53% have internet access. The BharatNet broadband connectivity target for villages is far behind schedule. Cyber crimes and fraud are increasing, causing the loss of huge amounts of money. There are also serious concerns over digital personal data and privacy in the absence of an effective protection regime.

UPSIDA revenue triples as industrial push gains momentum

Over the years, the Uttar Pradesh State Industrial Development Authority (UPSIDA) has transformed from a mere land-allotting agency into a leading force in policy-making, investment promotion and infrastructure development, said officials. For representation only This transformation is clearly reflected in the sharp increase in UPSIDA's revenue. In the financial year 2023–24, UPSIDA recorded revenue of ₹1,898 crore, with an estimated ₹1,937 crore projected for FY 2024–25 — marking over a threefold increase compared to FY 2021–22, the state government said on Sunday. This significant growth highlights not only financial success but also growing investor confidence in Uttar Pradesh, said UPSIDA officials. The authority's expanded mission now includes establishing Uttar Pradesh as a major industrial hub in India — attracting large-scale investments, creating employment opportunities for youth, and ensuring inclusive and sustainable growth across the state. Thanks to transparent and efficient land allotment systems, UPSIDA has allotted over 1,600 industrial plots in the past three years. Notably, 798 of these were allotted in FY 2024–25 alone. These allocations have directly boosted industrial investment and created thousands of jobs statewide. Under the Digital India Mission, UPSIDA has significantly improved service delivery. Through 42 digital services — including the 'Nivesh Mitra' portal, e-auctions, online payments, and grievance redressal mechanisms — the authority has received over 31,000 online applications, 96% of which have already been resolved, the state government reported. UPSIDA has approved a record budget of ₹6,190 crore for FY 2025–26. This budget will be used to upgrade industrial area facilities, including smart roads, continuous water supply, sewage networks, and 24x7 electricity. Promoting financial discipline, UPSIDA has reduced administrative expenses by 9%. Simultaneously, infrastructure spending has increased from ₹104 crore in 2017–18 to ₹415 crore in 2023–24, reflecting a strong focus on development. To enhance women's participation in industrial zones, UPSIDA has introduced pink toilets, dormitories, and women's help desks. Under the Atal Industrial Infrastructure Mission (AIIM), women-focused skill training and health services are also being provided. In line with its commitment to environmental sustainability, UPSIDA is working on initiatives such as the creation of green zones, effective solid and liquid waste management, and pollution control measures to balance industrial growth with ecological preservation. Through the mega allotment scheme launched in May 2025, 113 plots were allotted, which is expected to attract ₹700 crore in investment and generate over 4,800 jobs. Under the government's inclusive industrial policy, small industries are being provided affordable land and simplified procedures, while large investors benefit from dedicated cluster zones and robust policy support.

In 3 years, UPSIDA revenue grows 3 times

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh State Industrial Development Authority (UPSIDA) has grown more than three times in the past three years, highlighting its role in the state's industrial development. This marks an increase of more than three times compared to 2021–22 levels. Officials attribute this growth to a combination of policy reforms, infrastructure development, and increased investor interest. They said over the past few years, UPSIDA has expanded its role beyond land allotment to include functions such as policy implementation, investment facilitation, and infrastructure planning. The authority aims to support the state's goal of becoming a major industrial state by promoting investment, creating employment, and encouraging balanced regional development. In terms of land allocation, UPSIDA has allotted over 1,600 industrial plots in the last three years. Of these, 798 were allotted in 2024–25. BJP's Pradeep Bhandari lauds 10 years of Digital India, accuses INDIA bloc of corruption, nepotism

New Delhi [India], July 1 (ANI): As the Digital India Mission completed 10 years on Tuesday, BJP leader Pradeep Bhandari drew contrast between the BJP and the opposition bloc and said that while the INDI Alliance is associated with 'corruption and nepotism,' the Modi government is associated with the model of development. The BJP leader praised the central government for the success of Digital India and stated that the country now accounts for 50 per cent of global financial transactions, a testament to Prime Minister Modi's development model. Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Pradeep Bhandari said, 'Today (July 1, 2025), Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji's 'Digital India Mission' completes 10 years. As Digital India marks a decade of success, India now accounts for 50 per cent of global financial transactions. It's a victory of PM Modi's model of development. Look at the two parallels. While the INDI Alliance is synonymous with corruption and nepotism (pariwarvad and vinashwad), the Modi government is synonymous with development (vikas).' Taking a swipe at the Congress, Bhandari said, 'Remember when the Congress claimed the internet could never reach rural India? Today, even Mallikarjun Kharge tweeted about this.' He further highlighted the digital expansion under the BJP government, stating that internet connectivity has reached 95 per cent of India's villages. 'The Internet has reached 95 per cent of villages in the country. Under the Congress rule, only 27 crore internet connections existed. Today, India has 97 crore connections. This is the truth and the success of Digital India,' he said. Bhandari also hit out at Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, claiming he has 'no clue' about the situation in Karnataka. 'Today, Kharge ji himself doesnt know what will happen in Karnataka because Nehru, Gandhi, Vadra family's model is corruption and only corruption,' said Bhandari. Continuing his tirade against the Congress party, Pradeep Bhandari said, 'The people of the country have two models before them -- on one side is the model of the corrupt, dynastic, appeasement-driven opposition. In Himachal Pradesh, a government employee is beaten by Rahul Gandhi's close aide, while in Karnataka, they engage in corruption in schemes and remain busy fighting for power, because corruption is in their DNA.' 'Just think, what did former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi used to say? He used to say that the government sends one rupee, and only 15 paise reaches the public. Today, the same is happening in Congress-ruled states,' he added. Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared a blog titled 'A Decade of Digital India' on his official LinkedIn handle, celebrating 10 years of the Digital India mission. He described how India has transformed from limited internet access and digital services in 2014 to becoming a global leader in digital technology in 2024. PM Modi said that earlier, people doubted if Indians could use technology well. But the government trusted the people and used technology to bridge the gap between the rich and the poor. Today, digital tools have become part of everyday life for 140 crore Indians -- from learning and business to accessing government services. In 2014, India had about 25 crore internet connections. Now, it has over 97 crore. High-speed internet has even reached remote areas like Galwan and Siachen. The country's 5G rollout is one of the fastest in the world, with nearly 5 lakh base stations set up in just two years. PM Modi highlighted platforms like UPI, which now handles over 100 billion transactions yearly. Through Direct Benefit Transfers (DBT), Rs 44 lakh crore has been sent directly to people, saving nearly Rs 3.5 lakh crore by cutting out middlemen. He shared how platforms like ONDC and GeM are helping small businesses grow by connecting them with big markets. ONDC recently crossed 200 million transactions, and GeM has reached over 1 lakh crore in sales in just 50 days. The SVAMITVA scheme has given more than 2.4 crore property cards and mapped over 6 lakh villages. India's digital tools, including Aadhaar, CoWIN, DigiLocker, and FASTag, are now being utilised and studied by other countries. CoWIN helped in managing the world's largest vaccination drive, issuing 220 crore certificates. India is now among the top 3 startup ecosystems in the world, with over 1.8 lakh startups. The country is also growing fast in artificial intelligence (AI). Through the India AI Mission, India is offering access to powerful AI tools at very low cost, making it a global hub for digital innovation. PM Modi said that the next 10 years will be even more transformative. India is moving from using digital tools to leading the world with them. He called on innovators and entrepreneurs to build technology that helps and unites people, and to make India a trusted global partner in the digital world. (ANI)
