5G subscriptions expected to reach 2.9bil people by end-2025
KUALA LUMPUR: Nearly one-third of all mobile users, or about 2.9 billion people, are expected to be on the fifth-generation wireless cellular technology (5G) by the end of 2025, according to telecommunication and technology company Ericsson. In its June 2025 Ericsson Mobility Report, the company noted that 5G networks accounted for 35 per cent of global mobile traffic by the end of 2024, with forecasts indicating that this figure will exceed 80 per cent by 2030. In the Southeast Asia and Oceania region, the report said 5G subscriptions are projected to reach around 630 million in 2030, contributing around 49 per cent of total mobile subscriptions in the region. Data traffic per smartphone is expected to rise from 19 gigabytes (GB) per month in 2024 to 38 GB per month by 2030. Meanwhile, the report noted that the number of 4G subscriptions continues to decline globally as users migrate to 5G, with a drop of 55 million in the first quarter of 2025, bringing the total to just below 4.9 billion. Ericsson Malaysia, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh head David Hägerbro said Digital Nasional Bhd's intelligent, future-proof network forms the backbone of Malaysia's 5G-driven growth and digital transformation. "It is vital that the momentum continues to grow. Malaysia already has a head start in becoming the leading digital economy in ASEAN and must ensure that its 5G digital infrastructure remains open to an ecosystem that is conducive to global investments and innovation," he said. The report also stated that 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) is expected to make up more than 35 per cent of new global connections, with the number of connections projected to reach 350 million by 2030-more than double the current figure. 5G FWA plays a crucial role in expanding broadband access, particularly in areas where traditional wired infrastructure is less feasible, as it enables rapid deployment by leveraging existing mobile infrastructure that already covers 90 per cent of the world's population. "The mix of fibre, 5G FWA and satellite technologies will be crucial in meeting the connectivity needs of an increasingly digital world as we approach 2030," the report said. BUSINESS By Naveen Prabu & Nur Atiq Maisarah Suhaimi KUALA LUMPUR, June 5 (Bernama) -- The upcoming Smart City Expo Kuala Lumpur 2025 (SCEKL 2025) will place a strong emphasis on artificial intelligence (AI)-based urban solutions, to promote practical smart city adoption among Malaysian municipalities and the wider ASEAN region. Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB) chief corporate officer Datuk Ahmad Zaki Zahid said the expo, hosted by the Digital Ministry and co-organised by DNB and the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), is expected to attract 10,000 visitors and 2,000 delegates. 'The goal is to raise awareness of the next phase of smart city development, especially with AI. We want to ensure there is greater adoption of technology,' he told Bernama in an exclusive interview. Ahmad Zaki said smart cities today are no longer limited to infrastructure upgrades, but increasingly depend on AI, digital twins, and high-speed connectivity to enable predictive planning, real-time services and automated operations. 'Smart cities have over 80 indicators. What's new now is how AI improves service delivery — like knowing exactly when a bus will arrive or using high-definition surveillance to improve safety,' he said. Ahmad Zaki highlighted that Malaysia's major cities, such as Kuala Lumpur and George Town, already have advanced command centres, while smaller cities can benefit from affordable solutions being showcased at the expo. Meanwhile, he said 'digital twin' technology, real-time monitoring systems, the role of 5G infrastructure, and real-time responsiveness are crucial to the improvement of Malaysian cities. Ahmad Zaki explained that real-time responsiveness is key for urban services like traffic management and port automation.

Ministry extends digital empowerment schemes to rural Sarawak
KUALA LUMPUR: The Digital Ministry has extended its digital empowerment initiatives to rural Sarawak through an outreach programme at Rumah Collins in Selangau, Sibu. Organised by Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB), the Jelajah Digital Rumah Panjang initiative introduced hands-on solutions to help local communities leverage digital tools for economic and social development. Highlights of the programme included the 'eKelas Usahawan' talk by Maxis Bhd, a financial literacy session by SME Bank, and a TikTok Shop bootcamp, designed to equip rural entrepreneurs and youth with digital marketing and e-commerce skills. CyberSecurity Malaysia (CSM) also conducted a session to promote awareness on online safety and responsible digital behaviour. The event was attended by Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo and his deputy Datuk Wilson Ugak anak Kumbong. Both leaders reiterated the ministry's commitment to extending digital inclusion to all parts of the country, including remote regions in Sarawak. Gobind said every community, no matter how remote, should have equal access to digital tools and opportunities. "We are here not just to launch programmes, but to listen, learn, and build meaningful connections that shape our national digital agenda," he said.
