Today in Chicago History: ‘Public Enemy No. 1' John Dillinger killed outside Biograph Theater
Here's a look back at what happened in the Chicago area on July 22, according to the Tribune's archives. Is an important event missing from this date? Email us. Weather records (from the National Weather Service, Chicago) 1934: Chicago was in the grip of a weeklong heat wave, and the mercury that day reached 101. Twenty-three people died of the heat, but the death that drew the most attention was that of John Dillinger — a 31-year-old Indiana man who, on his birthday a month earlier, had been declared Public Enemy No. 1 by the FBI. In the heat of that July, movie houses advertised that they were 'air-cooled.' Perhaps that's what made Dillinger decide to take a prostitute named Polly Hamilton and Hamilton's landlady, Anna Sage, to the Biograph Theater (now known as Victory Gardens Theater) at 2433 N. Lincoln Ave., to see 'Manhattan Melodrama,' a gangster movie starring Clark Gable. Sage, a Romanian immigrant originally named Ana Cumpanas, operated a house of ill repute on the North Side. Vintage Chicago Tribune: John Dillinger's final days — and the 'Lady in red' who helped trap himOutside the theater, about 16 federal agents and East Chicago police officers took up positions. When the picture was over around 10:30 p.m., the trio left the theater and turned south on Lincoln Avenue in the direction of Sage's apartment on Halsted Street. The artificial lights of the marquee made her orange skirt appear deep red — earning her the nickname 'Lady in Red.' As the three walked south on Lincoln, Dillinger realized he was walking into a trap and pulled an automatic pistol from his pants pocket and bolted for the alley. Shots were fired. One bullet hit him in the back of the neck and exited through his right eye. That shot killed him. It apparently was fired by East Chicago police Sgt. Martin Zarkovich's .38-caliber revolver. The weapon was bought by a San Francisco man at a 1998 auction for more than $25,000. Thus came to an end Dillinger's long and infamous career in crime, including 11 months at the top of the country's Most Wanted list. Souvenir seekers dipped handkerchiefs in Dillinger's blood. Sage got a $5,000 reward for her role, but not the deal she wanted. She was deported to Romania in 1936 and died there 11 years later. 1970: A western lowland gorilla — named Kumba — was born for the first time in the 102-year history of Lincoln Park Zoo. '(Mom) Mumbi had no help at all with the delivery. She was her own midwife,' assistant zoo director Saul Kitchener said. 1979: Parts of Lake Shore Drive, the Eisenhower Expressway and seven bridges over the Chicago River were closed for filming of 'The Blues Brothers.' 1986: The Chicago Cubs fired ballgirl Marla Collins after she posed for a Playboy pictorial. 'Sportswriters pored over the photo evidence for hours Tuesday afternoon in the Wrigley Field pressbox, trying desperately to determine just how offensive the exposé was,' Tribune reporter Fred Mitchell wrote. 'Meanwhile, the Cubs won a game. The score was 6-4. We think.' Turtle's tale: Nickel, the Shedd Aquarium's endangered green sea turtle, marks her 20th year in Chicago2003: A 10-year-old, 124-pound rescued and rehabilitated green sea turtle — named Nickel due to the coin found lodged in her esophagus — was released into the Caribbean Reef exhibit at the Shedd Aquarium. 2012: Cubs third baseman turned broadcaster Ron Santo was posthumously inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Santo, who died in 2010, told the Tribune in 2003 that the team's retirement of his uniform No. 10 was special. 'It will be my Hall of Fame,' he said. Museum discusses Dillinger Gang
May 24—LIMA — There were just a few empty seats during Allen County Museum docent Karlyn Lauer's presentation about Lima's brush with the gangster era Saturday at the Allen County Museum. The Great Depression brought about tough times around the nation and in Lima. Amidst those trying times, the rising tide of crime and desperation swept into town in October 1933 because of John Dillinger and his gang, leaving a sheriff dead and a city forever marked by the violence of the gangster era. Allen County Sheriff Jess Sarber, whom Lauer described as a "well-respected man," was shot and killed the evening of Oct. 12, 1933 during a jailbreak plotted by Dillinger's associates. The Dillinger Gang had robbed the Bluffton Bank, now known as the Citizens National Bank of Bluffton, of $2,100, on Aug. 14, 1933. Afyer being captured, Dillinger was in the Lima jail awaiting trial. "They always wanted small banks in small towns," Lauer said. Prior to the arrest, Dillinger was found at the apartment of his girlfriend, Mary Longnacker, by police and made it known he wanted to be in the Allen County Jail so his plan could come to fruition. Two days before Sarber was killed, members of the gang were seen walking around the jail, trying to draw up a plan to get Dillinger out. "Two gang members come back to town [the next day] and visit an attorney telling him John's sister is upset and wants to see John," Lauer said. Feeling uneasy, Sarber decided to cancel the jail's church service that night. Around 6:20 p.m. Oct. 12, Charles Makely, Harry Pierpont and Russell Clark entered the jail while Sarber and his wife Lucy Sarber were joined by Deputy Wilbur Sharp for dinner and casual conversation. "They (gangsters) say they're officials from Indiana and want to interview John," Lauer said. When Sheriff Sarber asked the men for credentials, he was quickly shot. Lucy Sarber and Sharp were then locked in the basement for several hours, leading to an unimpeded escape for Dillinger and the men. The men then arrived in Hamilton with their girlfriends who had food, shelter and medical supplies on the ready before relocating to Chicago where business continued, continuing to rob small banks in small towns around Chicago. "They are successful businessmen, they dress in the best clothes, they have the best apartments, they have the fastest new cars," Lauer said. In January 1934, Dillinger killed a police officer, Patrick O'Malley, in eastern Chicago. A short time later in Tucson, Arizona, the gang was caught and extradited to Indiana and Ohio, Dillinger to Crown Point, Indiana, and Pierpont, Makely and Clark to Lima for the death of Sarber. Pierpont and Makley were sentenced to death; Clark received life in prison. After breaking out of a jail in Crown Point on March 3, 1934, Dillinger continued his criminal spree until he was betrayed in Chicago by a woman facing deportation. On July 22, 1934, FBI agents shot and killed Dillinger outside the Biograph Theatre in Chicago. Makley and Pierpont attempted a last-minute prison break with wooden guns carved in their cells. Makley was killed in the attempt. Pierpont, badly wounded, survived long enough to be executed in October 1934. Lauer has was pleased to present the topic during the afternoon hours Saturday. "It makes you feel good you know? It's a topic people are interested in," Lauer said. The Dillinger exhibit is on the bottom floor of the Allen County Musuem, 620 W. Market St., Lima. Lauer had two books on Dillinger present for attendees to flip through after the presentation. Reach Cade Higgins at 567-242-0351. Featured Local Savings

Three offensive guard prospects the Baltimore Ravens should consider drafting
Three offensive guard prospects the Baltimore Ravens should consider drafting Three OG NFL Draft prospects the Ravens should scout. We're just three weeks away from the NFL Draft, and as the big day approaches, offensive guard is a major need for the Baltimore Ravens. Last season's offensive line took some time to gel as a unit because Baltimore was introducing new starters at three of the five positions. The unit improved as the season went on, mainly due to the increased familiarity and continuity, but once again, we have some turnover this offseason. Patrick Mekari has left for Jacksonville, and the NFL Draft, most likely the middle rounds, would be the appropriate place to find his replacement. We're talking OGs here, but we mean draft prospect offensive guards, not original gangsters. Marcus Mbow, Purdue It doesn't seem likely that the Ravens will take an offensive guard in the first round on Thursday night. However, there is a good possibility that they'll select one on Friday night, in the second or third round. Mbow, who has shown some quickness and athleticism for a 300-pounder, should be the best available at this position at around that point in the draft. While Purdue football was in a pretty bad place recently, during the Ryan Walters era, you can't blame Mbow, who showed great ability as a run blocker. Willie Lampkin, North Carolina It's always fun to analyze the NFL Draft prospects of a football Tar Heel because the school's athletic department has a reputation synonymous with men's basketball. In fact, according to North Carolina is the only school with an active streak of reaching the national title game in nine straight decades (no one else has done it in more than six consecutive decades) and to have qualified for at least two Final Fours in six straight decades. Most people will likely think basketball first and football second when it comes to Carolina, so individual players could sometimes be overlooked. That includes Lampkin, which is ironic considering he has one of the more interesting prospect profiles in the 2025 NFL Draft. He's versatile and can play multiple positions with much energy. His tape showcases the dominance of a second or third-round prospect, but his measurables will leave NFL scouts wanting. Many draftniks describe his projection as "fascinating," meaning he's one of the more oversized wild cards in this draft class. Garrett Dillinger, LSU 325 Dillinger has the size to play guard or tackle, and he's done both at LSU. He played on the left side at both positions, where he showcased a great affinity for run-blocking and pass protection. He seems like the kind of guy who would fit in well with the zone-read packages that the Ravens like to employ. Of course, you can't discuss Dillinger without covering his teammate, Miles Frazier, who is on the other side. Louisiana State's other starting guard, Frazier, often appears right behind or close behind Dillinger on OG prospect lists. Walter Football actually has Dillinger fourth and Frazier fifth on their rankings for offensive guards in this class. That is around the range where the Ravens would likely be selecting an OG, and they can't go wrong with either of these Bayou Bengal prospects.
