NDA MPs slam SP silence over cleric's remark against Dimple Yadav

Samajwadi Party MP Dimple Yadav NEW DELHI : It was an unusual sight. Holding placards and shouting slogans, NDA MPs Monday staged a protest over All India Imam Association president Maulana Sajid Rashidi's objectionable remarks against opposition Samajwadi Party MP Dimple Yadav , with party chief Akhilesh Yadav criticising the cleric. ' Jo Lok Sabha mein pahen ke ayenge wohi humari har jagah dress ho gi (whatever I will wear to attend Lok Sabha, will be my dress for everywhere else),' Akhilesh said while responding to a media query over the issue. MPs of governing NDA said the cleric's purported remark protesting against the SP MP for not fully covering herself during a recent visit to a mosque was an insult to women as a whole, and questioned the 'silence' of the opposition. Dimple, however, was not impressed and said it's good that action is being taken now but it would have been better if similar protests and support had been visible when horrifying incidents like the one in Manipur came to light through footage on social media, she said. In Lucknow, an FIR has been lodged based on a complaint by local resident Pravesh Yadav, who accused Rashidi of making 'extremely offensive, inflammatory, and anti-women remarks' that were 'derogatory and misogynistic' and aimed at 'inciting religious disharmony & communal tension'. Talking to reporters, LJP (R) MP Shambhavi Choudhary said that for NDA, the honour and prestige of women is of utmost priority. Maulana Rashid had purportedly made misogynistic comments against Dimple in a TV debate and had praised another SP MP, Iqra Hasan, who had covered her head inside the mosque. The comments led to condemnation on social media and from women MPs, including BJP's Bansuri Swaraj and Congress's Renuka Chowdhury. The NDA MPs, especially women members, held a protest near Makar Dwar in the Parliament House complex, raising slogans like ' Nari shakti ka apman, nahin sahega Hindustan '. Swaraj called the remarks 'deeply shameful' and 'unacceptable'. 'Does opposition agree with this indecent remark? It is deeply shameful that such an offensive and inappropriate comment has been made against asitting MP...,' she said. She accused the opposition of prioritising 'appeasement politics' over women's dignity and affirmed that the NDA would continue to raise its voice for every woman, including Dimple Yadav.

Whatever I wear for LS sessions will be my dress everywhere: SP chief

1 2 Lucknow: At the centre of a row over their attire while visiting a mosque on Parliament Street in Delhi with party MPs last week, Akhilesh Yadav on Monday said whatever he wears for Parliament sessions will be his dress for every other venue. "Jo Lok Sabha mein pahen ke ayenge wohi humari har jagah dress ho gi (Whatever I will wear to attend Lok Sabha will be my dress for everywhere else)," Akhilesh told reporters over objections raised by a Muslim cleric over the dress of SP MPs during the mosque visit. A political storm erupted after Akhilesh Yadav, Dimple Yadav and other SP MPs visited the mosque on the invite of party's Rampur MP Maulana Mohibullah Nadvi, who was earlier the Imam of this mosque. BJP had said Dimple Yadav was "inappropriately dressed" during the visit. The issue came under focus after photographs of the visit surfaced, showing SP members, including Dimple Yadav, seated inside the mosque. The controversy escalated after Maulana Sajid Rashid — president of the All India Imam Association — made an objectionable and misogynistic comment about Dimple Yadav who was wearing a sari at a meeting in the mosque and compared her to another woman SP MP, Iqra Hasan, who had covered her head. Maulana Rashidi said it would have been better had Dimple Yadav covered her head. Taking serious exception to Maulana's comment, SP functionaries lodged an FIR against him at the Vibhuti Khand police station in Lucknow.

The protest, led by women MPs of the ruling alliance near Makar Dwar, came after Maulana Sajid Rashid reportedly criticised Yadav for wearing a sari during a meeting at a mosque and compared her with fellow SP MP Iqra Hasan, who had her head covered. Chanting slogans like 'Nari shakti ka apman, nahin sahega Hindustan', BJP MPs questioned the Opposition's silence on the issue, particularly targeting SP chief Akhilesh Yadav and Congress leaders. BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj questioned if 'appeasement politics' had become more important for the SP than a woman's dignity. 'It is deeply shameful that such an offensive and inappropriate comment has been made against a sitting MP, Dimple Yadav ji, and yet her husband Akhilesh Yadav and his entire party, as well as the entire Opposition, remain silent,' she said, as quoted by news agency PTI. — ANI (@ANI) JD(U) MP Lovely Anand said Akhilesh Yadav should stand by his wife. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like How Retirees Can Potentially Minimize RMD Taxes SmartAsset Learn More Undo 'Then, other women will also have confidence,' she said, demanding an apology from the cleric. BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari also hit out at the INDI alliance. 'It is a matter of great sadness that Akhilesh Yadav, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra are silent on the indecent remarks made by the Maulana against Dimple Yadav due to their vote-bank compulsions,' he said, as quoted by news agency ANI. 'If you cannot stand up for the honour of your wife, then how can you protect the daughters of Uttar Pradesh?' Meanwhile, Dimple Yadav responded by saying the outrage would have been more meaningful had the ruling alliance shown similar concern during the Manipur violence . 'It's good that action is being taken now... But it would have been better if similar protests and support had been visible when horrifying incidents like the one in Manipur came to light through footage on social media,' she told reporters at Parliament. SP MP Iqra Hasan also condemned the remarks and called for a social boycott of the Maulana. 'They are not any religious leaders or 'Thekedar' of the religion... It is a very shameful statement,' she told ANI. Maulana Rashid, defending himself, said he was merely objecting to Yadav's posture inside a mosque, saying it violated Islamic norms. However, an FIR was registered against him in Lucknow late Sunday for objectionable and inflammatory comments, East Zone DCP Shashank Singh said.

‘Against Islamic values': Muslim cleric defends remarks on SP MP Dimple Yadav

Amid backlash over his remarks against Samajwadi Party MP Dimple Yadav, All India Imam Association (AIIA) president Maulana Sajid Rashidi on Sunday defended his comments, claiming he was being unfairly targeted and had received threats. All India Imam Association president Maulana Sajid Rashidi (left) and SP MP Dimple Yadav (right).(X/PTI) He said he would approach the police and file a complaint against Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and Dimple Yadav, alleging that their party workers were behind the threats. 'The way she (Dimple Yadav) was sitting inside the mosque, I object to it based on Islamic beliefs,' Rashidi told ANI. 'According to Islamic principles, sitting in that manner is not appropriate, and the best example is Iqra Hasan, who was seated right next to her. Dimple should have learnt from her that this is how a Muslim woman sits, and she should have done the same,' Rashidi said. He asked whether action would be taken against those who circulated the image, saying, 'The question is, will Akhilesh Yadav file an FIR against the person who took this objectionable photo? The way Dimple Yadav is sitting, this would be considered immodest in our tradition.' 'I will also approach the police and submit the phone numbers from which I've received threats. I will file a complaint against Akhilesh and Dimple Yadav, because the people issuing these threats are clearly their workers,' he claimed. Rashidi said that his comments were based purely on religious grounds. 'I spoke keeping Islamic beliefs in mind. Even if it had been a Muslim woman, I would have said the same,' he said. 'If Dimple Yadav apologises and admits that her actions were against Islamic values, then I too will apologise.' The Muslim cleric has been booked for allegedly making objectionable and inflammatory remarks against Samajwadi Party MP Dimple Yadav during a televised debate. An FIR against him was lodged at Vibhuti Khand police station on Sunday evening following a complaint by local resident Pravesh Yadav. The remarks in question were made in response to Dimple Yadav's recent visit to a mosque. The complaint accused Rashidi of making statements that were not only derogatory and misogynistic but also 'highly provocative and aimed at inciting religious disharmony and communal tension.'

"It's good what is happening, it is good that FIR was registered. It would have been better if they would have protested when the incidents against women happened in Manipur. After Operation Sindoor, BJP leaders made indecent remark against our Armed Forces officer, it would have been better if they had stood against it," Dimple Yadav told PTI news agency. Sajid Rashidi's justifies remark Maulana Sajid Rashidi has stood by his statements made against Dimple Yadav, saying 'she didn't abide by Islamic beliefs while sitting in the mosque.' "Iqra Hasan's ear and nose are covered. On the other hand, there is Dimple Yadav. The question is, will Akhilesh Yadav file an FIR against the person who took this picture?" Rashidi said. He attacked Dimple's attire, saying it was not "in accordance with the Islamic principles". "I will apologise if they (Akhilesh and Dimple Yadav) apologise... A mosque is not a Parliament.
