Agent 'no idea' Hampton in conference when he rang

The mystery caller who rang the England goalkeeper Hannah Hampton during a press conference says he had "no idea" she was being interviewed and "never expected her to answer". Paul Crockford, who is Hampton's agent, decided to FaceTime her shortly after she saved two crucial penalties against Sweden and secured England a place in the Euro 2025 semi-finals last Thursday. Mr Crockford, who has managed the Birmingham-born goalkeeper for seven years, said he was keen to congratulate her and just wanted to tell her how proud he was. "We had all been watching in London, and as you can tell, we were a bit excited. When she showed us we were on her screen, we were like, 'Blooming heck'," he said. Mr Crockford described Hampton as "an incredibly determined person" and said she was "a joy to work with". The 24-year-old, who was brought up in Studley, Warwickshire, and later went to school at Erasmus Darwin Academy in Burntwood, Staffordshire, made her debut for England in 2022. Mr Crockford said she had been "fighting" for the number one spot as a goalkeeper since then, but her performance in the quarter-finals against Sweden had changed things. "What the other night did was seal and cement her position as a number one keeper for England," he added. "It's been a very long journey for us... we first met her nearly eight years ago, and we've seen her ups and downs and just been with her every step of the way," Crockford said, who previously managed musicians, including Dire Straits and Tears for Fears. "She's fantastic to work with and an inspiration to other players and fans - she's been a dream." The Chelsea goalkeeper's agent described their journey together as "incredible" and said he was "unbelievably proud". England will face Italy on Tuesday at 20:00 BST for a place in the Euro 2025 final. Follow BBC Birmingham on BBC Sounds, Facebook, X and Instagram. £100 a month invested since Live Aid could be worth £22m!

Saving enough for an affordable retirement might seem to be Against All Odds. But for those patient enough to stay invested in the stock market, it must feel more like Money For Nothing. Performed by Phil Collins and Dire Straits, respectively, both songs featured in the Live Aid charity concert held 40 years ago today, which raised more than £100 million in donations for famine relief in Ethiopia. But as they and the likes of Freddie Mercury and George Michael wowed the Wembley crowd – and an estimated 1.5 billion watched on TV worldwide – few would have known that their own financial futures would be transformed if they had the foresight to invest some spare cash wisely. For anyone who put £100 a month into the global stock market since 1985 could now be sitting on a pot worth more than £22 million, new analysis shows. Crucially, it assumes that up to 85 per cent of the portfolio had been kept in shares for 40 years and the dividends reinvested. That would have yielded a return of almost 21 per cent a year if you kept ploughing money into the global stock market through thick and thin. Even patriotic savers who bought a low-cost fund tracking the share price movements of UK equities would have seen their nest egg swell to almost £2 million, according to financial adviser Continuum. Stashing the same amount of money under a mattress would have yielded just £48,000 – or around £62,000 if the sum had been dripped into a typical bank savings account or cash ISA – meaning that you would have lost money in real terms after taking account of inflation. The findings underline the benefits of investing in shares for the long term – and of not trying to trade in and out of the stock market's many ups and downs. 'Taking some risk is likely to produce better results than cash over time, and the data backs this up,' said Continuum's Richard Watkins. 'If you want a comfortable later life, you must start saving as soon as possible, keep at it and diversify.'

The 18 best pubs in the New Forest

There's a refreshing lack of 'done up' pubs in the New Forest; the vast majority still have quirky and characterful interiors to match their quirky and characterful exteriors – often farmhouses or cottages that became ale houses and later inns. Some are remote, set in swathes of beautiful heath and woodland; others are tucked into villages; almost all have beer gardens. Everyone, of course, has their favourite: not one of these places is lacking in staunch supporters who will tell you – while leaning on the bar – exactly why 'their' pub is the best. Many of them have rooms and make authentic, inexpensive places to stay. All our recommendations below have been hand selected and tested by our resident destination expert to help you discover the best pubs in the New Forest. Find out more below, or for more New Forest inspiration, see our guide to the region's best hotels, restaurants and attractions. Find a pub by type: Best all-rounders The East End Arms For a pint with plenty of locals, turn right. For a cosy, attractive dining room and posh food, turn left. With walls lined with black and white photographs of well-known musicians (the pub is owned by Dire Straits bassist John Ilsley), this is a sophisticated gastropub with a menu from chef Mark Davison and his close-knit team; dishes include braised short rib or smoked ham hock croquettes.
