Man gets 10 yr jail term for raping minor
Rourkela: The additional district judge-cum-presiding officer of the Pocso court in Sundargarh on Tuesday sentenced a 30-year-old man to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for the rape of a minor girl. The case dates back to Jan 5, 2023, when a 16-year-old girl was reportedly assaulted while on her way to relieve herself. The accused, then 28, allegedly dragged her to a secluded area, raped her, and threatened her with dire consequences if she disclosed the incident. The survivor, fearing for her life, initially remained silent. The situation escalated when the accused circulated a nude video of her on social media on March 15, 2023. The survivor's mother discovered the video, prompting the girl to reveal the harrowing details of her assault and subsequent threats. Following this revelation, the survivor lodged a formal complaint at a police station on Mar 19, 2023. The police promptly arrested the accused, who was later released on bail in Jan 2024. Public prosecutor Debasis Mishra said during the court proceedings, Judge Gyana Ranjan Patnaik also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on the convict. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional year of imprisonment. Furthermore, the court directed the District Legal Services Authority, Sundargarh, to compensate the now 18-year-old survivor with Rs. 7 lakh.

Walkathon raises awareness on child marriages
Mandya: Collective efforts by the public and officials are crucial to making Mandya district free from child marriages, said Subramanya JN, principal district and sessions judge and chairman of the District Legal Services Authority. After inaugurating a mega awareness walkathon, organised in collaboration with the District Judiciary, the district administration, the zilla panchayat (ZP), and the Directorate of Child Protection, Subramanya stressed the need to educate girls about the ill-effects and legal consequences of child marriages. He urged people to report such cases immediately via Childline-1098 or ERRS112, so the authorities concerned intervene and take legal action against those involved in the illegal act. DC Kumara said although poverty and illiteracy fuelled child marriages in the past, their persistence today is unacceptable. He recommended that teachers monitor prolonged absenteeism among girls to help detect and prevent potential child marriages. ZP CEO KR Nandini said children's gram sabhas are now being held at gram panchayat levels to educate children about their rights, while discussions and cultural activities are held to created awareness on child marriages. Venkatesh, member of Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, pointed out that while legal enforcement reduced traditional child marriages, the rise in cases of underage pregnancies posing a new social challenge. Senior civil judge Anand M emphasised the importance of ensuring that rescued girls continue their studies. Officials from various departments, including the police, excise, women and child development, social welfare, and education sectors, participated in the event.

They made it clear that ragging is a punishable offense and should be reported without fear. The speakers also highlighted the free legal aid services provided by the District Legal Services Authority for students and victims. Kerala Court Sentences Man To 3 Life Terms For Raping Minor Daughter For 3 Years
Idukki (Kerala): A Kerala court on Thursday sentenced a man to three life terms, till his death, for repeatedly sexually assaulting his minor daughter for three years, from the time she was five-years-old till she turned eight, at their rented accommodation near Karimanoor here. Idukki Fast Track Special Court judge Manju V sentenced the man to life in jail till his death for various offences under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO), Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) Shijomon Joseph said. The court also imposed a fine of Rs three lakh on the father and directed that the amount, if recovered from him, should be given to his daughter. If the fine is not paid, the convict will have to undergo an additional six years imprisonment, the court said. It also directed the District Legal Services Authority to provide adequate compensation to the child. The abuse suffered by the child came to light in 2020 when she was eight-years-old, the SPP said. The child, who was suffering from constant stomach pain and was undergoing treatment for that, one day asked her mother whether the illness was caused because of her father's actions. After the mother asked her in detail about what had happened and during the subsequent counselling, information regarding the repeated sexual abuse was revealed, the SPP said. According to the girl's statement, the father had been repeatedly sexually abusing her at their house from the time she was in class 1, the prosecutor said. The abuse occurred at both the rented accommodations where the family lived, he said. A case was, thereafter, registered against the father at Karimanoor police station. The SPP said that the prosecution sought the maximum punishment for the accused and the court accepted the request.

Lok Adalat settles over 16,000 cases in Belagavi
The recent National Lok Adalat organised in Belagavi by the District Legal Services Authority has settled 16,665 cases across 85 courts. Of the 1.47 lakh pending cases, 25,076 were put up for resolution through the Lok Adalat. Most of the cases that were pending for over five years have been resolved. The Lok Adalat dealt with a wide range of matters, including bank loan defaults, insurance disputes, consumer court complaints, traffic violation notices, tax disputes, labour issues and family court cases. Additionally, cases involving a total monetary settlement of over ₹75 crore were cleared. As many as 24 cases of couples seeking divorce ended in reconciliation. This has provided relief to several families, said a release from DLSA secretary and senior civil judge Sandeep Patil.
