Chandigarh has 1,131 road stretches — 637 don't match with their signboards: Report

Of the 1,131 road stretches in Chandigarh, 637 have not matched with their dedicated signboards, a survey report said during the District Road Safety Committee meeting on Tuesday. According to the report, apart from the 637 road stretches having mismatched signboards, 178 had no signage at all and 175 lacked boards specifically for two-wheelers. The meeting of the District Road Safety Committee held under the chairmanship of Chandigarh Deputy Commissioner Nishant Kumar Yadav, and was attended by the SSP (Traffic & Security), SDMs, representatives from the Department of Health Services (DHS), Engineering Department, Office of the Chief Architect, the Excise Department, and officers of the Municipal Corporation. In the meeting, it was apprised that a review was conducted regarding the Speed Limit Mapping Project by Lepton Software in partnership with Google Maps, aimed at displaying accurate official speed limits across Chandigarh roads on digital navigation platforms. During the data verification exercise conducted as part of the project, it was observed that several discrepancies exist between the officially notified speed limits and the speed signages currently displayed on various roads. Taking serious note of the discrepancies, the Deputy Commissioner directed all concerned departments, including the Engineering Department, Police (Traffic Wing), and other relevant civic agencies, to initiate immediate action in a time-bound manner for rectification of wrongly displayed speed signages. He emphasised that accurate speed limit signage is crucial not only for commuter safety but also for the effective implementation of speed regulations by enforcement agencies. The meeting also discussed that the encroachments at Sector 29/30 light point will be addressed through a joint survey by SDM (East) and stakeholder departments, with enforcement measures including boundary walls and iron railings. The Chief Engineer, Chandigarh, was also asked to implement speed calming measures on the high-traffic Jan Marg stretch between Sectors 9 and 10 using 15 mm raised strips, post-monsoon. Regarding illegal taxi operations near Novotel Hotel, Tribune Chowk, officials reported the installation of crash guard grills to prevent unauthorised entry, with completion expected by early July. The traffic police have been asked to submit an action taken report. Expressing concern over a liquor vend at Dhanas Light Point — citing lack of parking and its location near a congested junction—the Deputy Commissioner instructed the Excise Department not to allot the spot in future auctions and to look for a more suitable site.

Coimbatore Corporation plans new road along Valankulam bund

Coimbatore Corporation has proposed opening a new road along the Valankulam bund to create an alternate route for vehicles travelling from Lanka Corner to Ukkadam. Originally developed as a pedestrian pathway under the Smart Cities Mission, the bund-side track is now being considered for partial conversion into a one-way road. The stretch starts opposite the two-wheeler parking lot near the Lanka Corner railway bridge, runs alongside the lake, and ends at the Vincent Road junction near the Ukkadam–Sungam bypass, covering approximately two kilometres. According to a senior Corporation official, the pathway was created during Smart Cities works and lies adjacent to a local sewage canal that feeds Valankulam. Encroachments along the canal, including 11 commercial structures, have been removed. Households along the stretch will be relocated to alternate housing, enabling the Corporation to restore the full 10-metre width of the road. Once completed, the road is planned to carry one-way traffic from Lanka Corner to Ukkadam. The proposal has been submitted to the District Road Safety Committee and the city traffic police. Once approved, the road will be paved and opened to traffic. Officials said this would help decongest Vincent Road and reduce pressure at the Town Hall junction.

Mohali: Do away with black spots, DC tells officials

Deputy commissioner Komal Mittal on Sunday directed the officials concerned to take immediate and concrete measures to eliminate accident-prone black spots across the district to prevent road mishaps and ensure smooth traffic flow. Chairing a meeting of the District Road Safety Committee, she instructed officials of the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA), municipal corporation and local councils besides PWD and NHAI to prioritise doing away with the black spots and submit action-taken reports before the next meeting. Calling for stringent action against traffic violators, the deputy commissioner (DC) directed the police, the regional transport officer (RTO) and the district child protection officer to conduct regular checks. Special focus was laid on ensuring that school buses strictly comply with the Safe School Vahan Policy. RTO Rajpal Singh Sekhon informed the committee that during April and May, 1,352 challans, amounting to ₹59.87 lakh, were issued. Mittal further emphasised timely uploading of accident details on the E-DAR (Electronic Detailed Accident Report) portal that facilitates faster compensation disbursal through centralised accident reporting, geotagging and data sharing. The police and the hospitals were asked to update the portal promptly to help the Union ministry of road transport and highways effectively identify and address high-risk zones. Appealing to residents to assist road accident victims without the fear of legalities, the DC reiterated that Good Samaritans are legally protected and eligible for rewards and recognition. The sub-divisional magistrates (SDMs) were directed to expedite pending compensation claims related to hit-and-run cases. As per the scheme, victims' families are entitled to ₹2 lakh in case of a fatality and ₹50,000 for grievous injuries.
