Pat Ryan gets minutes into his extended Cork panellists in League deciders

PAT RYAN took the chance to get some game time into his extended Cork panel as the finals of the Red FM Cork Hurling League took place across the weekend. Sarsfields chose to use Cathal McCarthy and Daniel Hogan in the second half of their Division 1 final victory over a St Finbarr's side who did the same with William Buckley and Jack Cahalane. Midleton took the Division 2 title with a victory over Killeagh while in Division 3, Eoin Roche played the opening half for Bride Rovers as they bested Newcestown by 1-29 to 3-16 in the final. In the end it took Rovers extra time to see off Newcestown at a sundrenched Riverstown, as they overturned a four-point deficit in extra time before kicking for home. Adam Walsh was their scorer in chief with 0-13, Conor Barry plundered 0-6, Louie Roche hit 1-2 while Conleith Ryan, Ronan O'Connell and David Barry all clipped 0-2. Eddie Kenneally underlined his importance to Newcestown in scoring 1-10, Jack Meade hit 1-1, including his customary sideline, while Gearóid O'Donovan raised their third green flag in extra time. Bandon suffered disappointment for the second weekend in-a-row as Inniscarra edged them by 3-11 to 2-13 in the Division 4 final played in Ballinhassig. Andrew McCarthy's goal six minutes from time was the key score for Inniscarra as it gave them the edge in the final stages. McCarthy also hit 0-2 for the winners, Pádraig Holland scored 1-2, Mark Nagle clipped 1-1 while Joseph Enright pilfered 0-4. Michael Cahalane top scored for Bandon with 0-7, Mark Sugrue scored 1-2 while Ciarán McCarthy clipped 1-1. Bandon's disappointment in losing hurling and football finals will be offset by the promotion in both codes. Pictured with the Red FM Div 1 Hurling league trophy were John, Orla and Hollie Crowley from Sarsfields. Picture: Howard Crowdy Where Bandon suffered double disappointment, Aghabullogue experienced double joy as they claimed the Division 5 title to go with their Division 4 football title with a 5-14 to 1-9 win over Ballyhea in Glantane. Matthew Bradley, as he so often does, led the way for Aghabullogue by scoring 1-7, James Lane hit Ballyhea for 2-2 while Luke Casey clipped 2-1. Luke Crowley raised Ballyhea's green flag, while John Morrissey and Maurice O'Sullivan both scored 0-3. The Division 6 final saw Glen Rovers and Cloyne clash in Caherlag with the city men earning a 1-14 to 0-16 victory. Cloyne seemed to be the stronger side for 40 minutes of this game but Evan Murphy's goal in the 41st-first minute tipped the tie in the Glen's favour. Murphy supplemented his goal with seven points while Dylan Long and Lee Quilligan both hit Cloyne for 0-2. Brian O'Shea led the charge for Cloyne with 0-9 while Conor Cahill hit 0-3 from midfield. Finally, Diarmuid Ó Mathúna's took the Division 7 title as late goals from Gearóid O'Donovan and Caolán O'Donovan fired them to a 3-12 to 0-15 win over Killavullen in Ballyanley. Caolán O'Donovan added 0-9 to his goal for the West Cork men, Gearóid O'Donovan also clipped a point while Jamie Lucey hit Killavullen for 1-1. For Killavullen, Jamie Magner was their top man with 0-8 while Owen Magner helped himself to 0-3.

'They're going mad online' - Doyle hopes good times returning for Kildare

Considering their geographical locations and respective football traditions, a Tailteann Cup final at Croke Park should suit Kildare and intimidate Limerick. In reality, the opposite may very well be the case. John Galvin may have stated earlier this week that he only played at Croke Park three times in his 15-year Limerick career, but the present team has already played there twice in 2025, and won both times. For some of the Limerick players, their only Croke Park experiences will have been winning ones. Kildare, meanwhile, have found GAA HQ to be a house of horrors. Prior to their laboured Tailteann Cup semi-final defeat of Fermanagh, they'd lost their previous five games at Croke Park, including this season's Division 3 final against Offaly. Stretch it out a little longer and they'd lost 20 of the 27 Championship games they'd played there since the 2010 All-Ireland semi-final against Down. As a player and then selector under Glenn Ryan between 2022 and 2024, Johnny Doyle experienced the Croke Park curs, though the AIB GAA ambassador said it should never be used as an excuse. "It's not something I'd have a huge fear of," said Doyle of the Croke Park factor. "I know it has been said about Croke Park, you know, a half empty stadium and all these different things come into it when you lose, people look for every excuse but I certainly would never have bought into that. "As a player, I loved playing at Croke Park and it didn't really matter whether it was full or not. Obviously when it's full there's a huge atmosphere but that brings its own pressure. Look, the two teams go in under the same conditions and one will win. "So I wouldn't be using that. I wouldn't have any fear about the Croke Park element. It just doesn't wash with me at all. "It's the best stadium, it's the best surface, so you should be able to produce your best football in those conditions and if we come out beaten this weekend, I don't think it'll be down to Croke Park. Others may but I certainly won't, and I wouldn't use it as an excuse." Likewise, Doyle doesn't have much time for the narrative that Kildare should be able to take a Division 4 team like Limerick, albeit the Division 4 champions this year, in their stride. "They'll beat them when they've them beaten and they won't beat them before that," insisted the Allenwood man. "We've been guilty, teams I've been on myself in the past, when people say, 'Oh you should win that' and we don't win and that's the consistency we probably lacked over the last few years." After a difficult few years under Ryan, when Kildare were twice relegated, their large support base craves success. Doyle acknowledged the tough times, particularly after the losses. "I remember one game we lost, after the Laois game when they beat us in the Tailteann Cup last year, and my sister ringing me saying, 'Are you okay?'" said Doyle. "I said, 'Yeah, I'm okay, I'm disappointed'. And she was like, 'It's just that they're going mad online'. "But that's part of it, we just have to accept that but, yeah, it was tough. It was tough for everybody."

TV time 'massive' for Limerick footballers in competition with other codes

The way Cillian Fahy sees it, Limerick sports people probably gravitate towards hurling first, then rugby, then soccer. Gaelic football? Fourth on the list at best. "I was only thinking the other day actually, this year's league final was probably the first time a lot of kids in Limerick actually saw us play, because it was on TV," said the Limerick football captain. "We don't have a big following so to actually get on TV for the Division 4 final, that was probably the first time a lot of people had seen us this year. "Now to get this far and to be preparing for the Tailteann Cup final, to stay in the shop window as long as we have, to be on RTÉ two weeks ago for the semi-finals and to do it again this weekend is massive. "It's really important for children to see, for kids to see that there's a competitive football team in Limerick and that there is a chance to get up to Croke Park and that there is a chance to be competing for silverware." For a county not used to being in the shop window, Saturday's Tailteann Cup final against Kildare will actually be Limerick's third Croke Park game this year. Prior to 2025, they hadn't played there since the 2022 Division 3 league final while, before that, it was 2013 when a Limerick football team had crossed the Croker whitewash. To put the most positive spin on it, this season's Division 4 league final win, and the Tailteann semi-final win, were the first Croke Park outings for a number of Limerick players who therefore boast a perfect record at GAA HQ. Opponents Kildare, meanwhile, have had a difficult time at Croke Park over the years, losing five games there in a row before labouring past Fermanagh in the recent semi-final. "I don't think Kildare have any fear coming up there," maintained Fahy. "They have a lot more experience playing there than we do as well." It helps Kildare too that they gained promotion from Division 3 this year, compared to Limerick winning Division 4. No Division 4 side has ever won the Tailteann Cup. "We're here now, we're both in the final," shrugged Fahy. "Look, Kildare will be coming in as favourites. But we think we have every opportunity to perform and to play well and we'll see what happens after that." The Dromcollogher/Broadford man is optimistic about it being a high-scoring, open and enjoyable game. Both sides are stacked with quality forwards with Limerick benefiting from the strong form of goal poacher Danny Neville, 2024 Tailteann Cup All-Star Emmett Rigter, Fahy himself and the prolific James Naughton. "He's in the form of his life," said Fahy of Naughton, who struck 4-12 in one league game alone this year. "He's playing unbelievable football. His free-taking is really something we rely on as well. He's very consistent with that. He's been incredible all year really. It's great to have him in that form and to have him as a weapon that we can rely on."
