Suniel Shetty Says He Was Told To Quit Acting, Sell Idlis: 'Dukaan Main Vada Bechna Chahiye'
Last Updated: A critic told Suniel Shetty that he was stiff, couldn't walk and didn't know how to act. Suniel Shetty made his debut in the 1992 film Balwaan with Divya Bharti. Although the film was a huge box office success, the actor has revealed that one critic took a jab at his looks and told him to sell idlis and vadas at his restaurant instead. Suniel mentioned that while the critic thought it was an insult, the restaurant has contributed greatly to his success. Suniel Shetty told Radio Nasha, 'When Balwaan got released, it was a blockbuster. However, ek bhut bade critic ne, shayad ek lauta critic tha voh. Usne kaha ki iski film toh chali gayi lekin yeh bahut kharab actor hai (A very big critic, probably the only one at that time, he wrote that even though his film has worked, he is a very bad actor). 'He doesn't know acting, doesn't know how to walk, his body is so stiff, isko aapni dukaan mein idli vada bechna chahiye (He should sell idli-vada at his restaurant).'" He added, 'He thought he was insulting me, but that idli-vada was my livelihood. It educated my sisters and me, probably way better than those whose fathers didn't sell idli-vada or run a South Indian business. He thought he was making fun of me, but if I am still surviving in the industry after 35 years, it's because of the idli-vada restaurant and my hospitality business. I used to do everything—I cleaned tables, served at the counter, and stood in the kitchen. How does that matter? I was Suniel Shetty then, and I am Suniel Shetty now." Suniel Shetty says working with ‘fearless' Divya Bharti in Mohra was a dream: We used to plan how to make people laugh
The action film Mohra proved to be a game changer for Suniel Shetty. Originally, late actor Divya Bharti had been cast opposite Suniel, but following her sudden death, Raveena Tandon stepped into the lead role. In a recent interview with Radio Nasha, Suniel recalled working with Divya and heaped praise on her fearless spirit. There were real convicts in the jail, yet she was absolutely fearless. Again, she was full of life and masti. Toh kahin na kahin Rajiv ko kaise hum sata sakte hain, Shabeer ko hum kaise sata sakte hain, humari planning wohi rehti thi (So, in one way or another, figuring out how to tease Rajiv and Shabeer—that was always our plan), how we could make people laugh and lighten the atmosphere. It was an absolute dream to work with her.' For the unversed, Suniel made his Bollywood debut in Balwaan, which also featured Divya Bharti. Mohra, directed by Rajiv Rai, went on to become a huge box-office success, starring Akshay Kumar, Naseeruddin Shah and Raveena Tandon in principal roles, with Poonam Jhawer, Raza Murad, Paresh Rawal, Gulshan Grover and Sadashiv Amrapurkar in key supporting parts. Divya Bharti was among the highest-paid Indian actresses of her time. She has featured in several successful films like Bobbili Raja, Rowdy Alludu, Shola Aur Shabnam, Deewana and others. She was just 19 when she tragically fell from the balcony of her fifth-floor apartment in Versova, Andheri West, Bombay, and later died at Cooper Hospital. Suniel will next be seen in the historical action film Kesari Veer, which marks Sooraj Pancholi's comeback to the big screen and also stars Vivek Oberoi and Akanksha Sharma. The film is scheduled for release in cinemas on 23 May.
