Task force to check fertiliser scarcity, exploitation in Dharwad

Hubballi: To prevent misuse of govt orders and ensure that farmers receive fertilisers on time, Dharwad district administration has formed taluk-level task forces. Farmers complained that many are buying DAP and Urea for sowing, but many shops have already declared that there is no stock. Some shops are forcing farmers to buy additional products if they want urea. This has caused a lot of worries among farmers who are now busy with sowing activities after receiving good rains. Shops are also charging higher prices for urea instead of prescribed prices. A bag of urea costs upto Rs 267, but shops are collecting Rs 300 to 320 per bag, said farmers. Some shops are also diverting urea, which is in great demand, to industries for higher prices than supplying it to the farmers. Based on complaints, a team led by deputy commissioner Divya Prabhu and other officials paid surprise visits to several fertiliser shops in Kalghatagi and other areas to check the stock and other issues. Dc Divya Prabhu told TOI that some fertiliser shops were forcing farmers to buy additional products along with urea, and such shopkeepers were warned. They have also instructed all fertiliser shops to display a board containing information on the available stock, price, and other details. It is also instructed that they should issue bills as per GST norms. "It has come to our notice that some shopkeepers are trying to create artificial scarcity of fertilisers, particularly urea, in the district, though there is enough stock. We will file a criminal case against such shopkeepers if they try to create artificial scarcity of fertilisers. We have already formed taluk-wise task force committees comprising officers from revenue, agricultural, and other departments to pay surprise visits to monitor the fertiliser shops," DC Divya said. She also said many farmers are using excessive quantities of urea, believing that it will give a better yield. "However, the usage of more than the prescribed quantity will only harm the crops. Farmers should use 1 or 1.5 bags of urea depending on the pattern of the crops they grow per acre, but now farmers are using 3-4 bags of urea per acre. We are now planning to create awareness among them on how much should be used per acre to get better yield," she said. She said there is enough stock of urea and there is no shortage. "We need 28,300 MT of urea till Sept. We have already received 17,230 MT of urea to date, of which 16,000 MT was sold out. As and when we require, we get sufficient stock from the govt. We have a target to take up sowing activities in kharif on 2.8 lakh hectares of land, and we have already completed 95% sowing. We will keep monitoring the process of selling and distributing urea and other products," she added. Dharwad DC mulls reducing teachers' non-academic tasks

Dharwad: Even as discontent is brewing among the schoolteachers over govt burdening them with non-teaching assignments leaving little time for them to teach and blaming them for students' poor performance in the examinations, the Dharwad district administration is mulling giving the teachers some relief. Deputy commissioner Divya Prabhu on Wednesday said a proposal will be sent to govt to provide the services of outsourced personnel to help teachers distribute eggs and bananas to the students under mid-day meal scheme. "A technical person will be provided at the cluster level to help teachers in online and technical operations," the DC said. Chairing a meeting of officials from school education and literacy department, teachers, headmasters and mid-day meal scheme staff here, DC Divya said Mission Vidyakashi-2024 did not meet with success and attributed inadequate guidance to the students at primary and secondary level. She said she had directed the DDPI to send a proposal to govt to hire some other agency to manage the distribution of eggs and bananas to the students under the mid-day meal scheme. The teachers had complained that almost half a day was spent distributing eggs, milk and bananas to the students and then uploading the information on the attendance of the students online. They had cited lack of facilities like availability of computers, internet and net connectivity among others.

Diarrhoea elimination campaign

Dharwad: To prevent life-threatening dehydration caused by diarrhoea in children below five years, a 'Severe Diarrhea Elimination Campaign – 2025' has been launched across Dharwad district. The campaign will run till July 31, said deputy commissioner Divya Prabhu. Inaugurating the campaign at the district hospital in Dharwad on Thursday, she said diarrhoea can lead to dangerous levels of dehydration in children, which can be fatal. She emphasised that this can be prevented by administering the correct dosage of ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution) and zinc tablets. The aim of the campaign is to reduce child deaths due to severe diarrhoea to zero. She advised that when a child experiences diarrhoea, ORS and zinc should be administered promptly to avoid dehydration. Parents are encouraged to visit the nearest health centre to avail free treatment. The campaign will be held in all health centres, sub-centres, and hospitals. ASHA and health workers will also conduct awareness programmes in schools and Anganwadi centers. ZP CEO Bhuvanesh Patil stressed that mothers should not stop breastfeeding when children suffer from diarrhoea, as doing so may increase the risk of dehydration.
