Ahead of the Ganesh festival, the Dharwad district administration has cracked the whip on manufacturers and sellers of Ganesh idols made of PoP (Plaster of Paris) with a large number of PoP idols being seized at Garag village in Dharwad taluk earlier this week. Deputy Commissioner Divya Prabhu G.R.J., who spoke to presspersons after verifying the seized lot of PoP idols at Kalabhavan Ground in Dharwad, said that she has directed the officials to register a criminal case against those who had illegally stored the banned PoP idols. The Deputy Commissioner said that as check-posts are being set up on the inter-district borders and in the city limits, some people have begun procuring PoP idols in advance and storing them in mofussil areas and on the outskirts of the city. So, authorities have been directed to look out for such storage facilities and seize the idols, she said. She said that the seizure of 184 PoP idols was made at Garag village following a tip-off by the general public. A task force comprising officials of Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, Revenue Department, Gram Panchayat and Police was constituted to carry out the raid and seize the idols, she said. During the raid, the task force members found that Vinayak Kalappa Pattar of Garag village had procured and stored the 184 PoP idols of various sizes and work on giving the final touch and painting was under way. The idols were stored at two locations, one in Shivoji Extension and the other at Sangolli Rayanna Extension. The accused is a wholesale and retail seller of idols. The Deputy Commissioner said that during enquiry, the accused revealed that all the idols were procured from Kolhapur in Maharashtra and the Superintendent of Police has been asked to take up investigation and take the requisite action. The seized PoP idols have now been stored at Kalabhavan in Dharwad and the plan is to dispose them of as per rules. Senior officer of KSPCB Jagadish I.H., Panchayat Development Officer Shashidhar Gandhad, municipal officer Gangadhar Manakattimath, Garag Sub-Inspector of Police Sidrama Unnad and others were present. Appeal Meanwhile, the Deputy Commissioner has appealed to the general public and Ganesh mandals to use only Ganesh idols made of mud as they are environment-friendly and also considered ideal for worshipping. She said that PoP idols are a hazard to nature as they do not get dissolved in water and also, contaminate waterbodies. People should outrightly reject PoP idols in their own interest, she said. Task forces The Deputy Commissioner also said that as the Ganesh festival is fast approaching, coordination committee meetings of various departments are being held and village, taluk and district-level task forces are being made active. Along with directions for conducting awareness programmes, authorities have been directed to conduct raids and seize banned PoP idols.

‘Severe Diarrhoea Elimination Campaign' launched in Karnataka's Dharwad
The Dharwad district administration in Karnataka has launched the 'Severe Diarrhoea Elimination Campaign – 2025', in order to prevent life-threatening dehydration caused by diarrhoea in children below the age of five years. The campaign will run untill July 31, 2025, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Divya Prabhu G.R.J. said during its launch at the District Hospital in Dharwad. The campaign will be held in all health centres, sub-centres, and hospitals of the district. ASHA and other health workers will also be conducting awareness programmes in schools and Anganwadi centres. The DC stated that diarrhoea can lead to dangerous levels of dehydration in children, which can be fatal. She emphasised that this can be prevented by administering the correct dosage of ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution) and Zinc tablets. The aim of the campaign is to reduce the number of child fatalities due to severe diarrhoea to zero. 'When a child suffers from diarrhoea, ORS and Zinc should be administered promptly to avoid dehydration. Parents are encouraged to visit the nearest health centre to avail free treatment,'' she said. Zilla Panchayat CEO Bhuvanesh Patil said that mothers should take special care of children suffering from diarrhoea, and urged them not to stop breastfeeding during that time, as doing so may increase the risk of dehydration. District Health and Family Welfare Officer S.M. Honakeri informed that there are 2,07,837 children below the age of five in the district. The campaign aims to raise awareness and prevent diarrhoea among these children. He said that this can be achieved through maintaining cleanliness, washing hands properly, and ensuring hygiene during food preparation. District Surgeon Sangappa Gabi emphasised that parents should bring their children to the hospital promptly so that they can receive appropriate treatment and avoid life-threatening situations. Resource persons T.A. Shepur, Dr. Varsha, and Dr. Megha delivered lectures on diarrhoea prevention, dangerous symptoms, and the precautions mothers must take to avoid dehydration in children. Task Force on child rights told to meet compulsorily once in three months
Deputy Commissioner Divya Prabhu G.R.J. has said that the Child Rights Protection Task Force, headed by tahsildars, should compulsorily meet once in three months to review and take necessary preventive steps for child rights protection. Chairing a meeting of officials in Dharwad on Monday, the Deputy Commissioner stressed the need for effective action to prevent atrocities on children. She said that coordinated efforts should be made by the Labour Department, School Education Department and Taluk Task Force for the purpose. While reviewing progress of work she observed that the Labour Department and the Taluk Task Force have not been satisfactorily protecting and rehabilitating child and adolescent workers in the district. She directed them to intensify surprise inspections and raids at industries, brick kilns, hotels and other potential workplaces of child workers. The Deputy Commissioner also stressed the need for taking strict legal action against both parents who send their children to work and employers who hire them. Any laxity will lead to stern action against officials concerned, she warned. Ms. Diyva Prabhu asked Labour officials to collect information through BEOs about students consistently remaining absent, visit their houses and submit survey reports. 'As schools offer a safer environment for children, every child should be encouraged to attend schools regularly. Labour Department officials must visit residences of such children who are habitually absent and submit a report by the fifth of every month,' she said. Emphasising the need for observing World Day Against Child Labour (June 12) in a meaningful manner, she asked the officials to prepare an action plan and effectively implement it to make the district child labour-free. For creating awareness on the day, street plays and awareness campaigns should be organised in slum areas and densely populated localities. This apart, drawing, essay and speech competitions on the theme should be organised in educational institutions, she said. Senior officials of various departments were present.
