Major Superstar Was Hiding In Plain Sight In ‘Fantastic Four,' Filmmaker Confirms
'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' took in $118 million over the weekend to dethrone 'Superman' and lead the weekend box office. And one scene that had fans talking didn't come during the movie came during the credits. During a mid-credits scene, Sue Storm ― the Invisible Woman ― leaves her son, Franklin, in the living room to get a book. When she returns, Franklin is looking up at the cloaked figure of Doctor Doom. Doctor Doom is holding his mask, while Franklin reaches up and touches the villain's face, which is hidden by the cloak's hood and not seen on camera. Last year, Marvel announced that Robert Downey Jr. would return to the MCU to portray Doctor Doom. However, since his face is never seen, many fans have guessed that a stand-in was used for the quick scene. Now, 'Fantastic Four' director Matt Shakman told Phase Hero's Brandon Davis that it really was Downey in the cloak, and that the scene was shot by Anthony and Joe Russo, aka the Russo Brothers. The duo, who directed some of the biggest Marvel films so far, are working on next year's 'Avengers: Doomsday,' in which a revised lineup of heroes ― including the Fantastic Four ― take on Downey's Doctor Doom. Robert Downey Jr may return as Doctor Doom after Avengers Secret Wars
Marvel Studios may not be finished with Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom after the upcoming Avengers films, according to a new report. According to scooper DanielRPK, Marvel is considering extending Downey Jr.'s involvement as Doom beyond Avengers: Doomsday (2026) and Avengers: Secret Wars (2027). Marvel's decision to cast Downey Jr.—famously known for his portrayal of Iron Man—as Doctor Doom marks a bold creative shift as the studio repositions itself following the Infinity Saga. While Thanos was teased over several years and gradually built into a franchise-defining villain, Doctor Doom will have a much shorter runway, having only recently been teased in newer films. Originally, Kang the Conqueror was expected to serve as the next central antagonist. However, behind-the-scenes challenges and lukewarm audience reception reportedly led to Marvel rethinking its long-term narrative plans. Now, with Doctor Doom set to debut in Avengers: Doomsday, Marvel is already weighing the potential of keeping Downey Jr. in the role for future projects beyond Secret Wars. If true, this could suggest the character survives those events or returns through a multiverse scenario—a tactic common in comic adaptations but sometimes criticized for reducing narrative stakes. If Doctor Doom remains central to the MCU, it raises questions about the financial sustainability of continuing with Downey Jr. The actor is reportedly earning over $80 million for the two Avengers films, with total compensation potentially exceeding $100 million. Keeping him on board would require a substantial ongoing investment. Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled for release on December 18, 2026, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars on December 17, 2027. Whether Downey Jr. stays on long-term could significantly influence the future tone and structure of Marvel's next saga.

By the end of next year, Robert Downey Jr. will have done both when he finally arrives in theaters as the leader of Latveria and metal-plated bad guy, Victor von Doom. Bringing back the star power and charisma he let rip as Iron Man and using it for evil in the franchise he helped build, the excitement levels are high as to what kind of Doctor Doom he'll be delivering in the upcoming movie. Whatever it ends up being, though, the new Captain America he'll be facing off against welcomes his return. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, current Captain America Anthony Mackie shared his thoughts on Downey returning to the MCU and expressed his gratitude for seeing it happen. 'You know, the fun part is Robert Downey Jr. was such an integral part of the beginning of my career at Marvel," he confessed. "It's great to have him back and continue the legacy he built with the MCU.' By the sounds of things, it almost feels like he never left after his original Iron Avenger, Tony Stark, made the killer snap that brought back half the MCU in Avengers: Endgame. Not only working with stars he left behind in the 2019 film, Downey is also welcoming in the newcomers to the MCU that are set to join in on this super-sized endeavor. Speaking to The Happy Sad Confused Podcast, The Fantastic Four: First Steps star discussed what it was like to see the original star of the MCU in action and behind the scenes. 'He's the most incredible human being—soulful, deep, kind. He's been an amazing leader to us, considering we're the newbies, you know," she explained. "And a lot of the others have known this world for a really long time. He's just doing the most amazing work.' Marvel is Making Big, Cosmic Moves in Its Comics
Things are always happening in the Marvel Universe, and a lot's been happening as of late. Doctor Doom's taken over the planet and there's been some big assassinations up in space, and they're both leading to some new status quo changes over the rest of 2025 and into 2026. At its various panels across San Diego Comic-Con, the publisher gave details on what's to come in the aftermath of its two big, current events, Imperial and One World Under Doom. In the pages of Doom's final issue in November, the evil Doctor will make sure to turn his victory over Earth's heroes into a fixed point in time, which also means his defeat is just as fixed, too. This will lead us into what looks like a hunt for the new Sorcerer Supreme since Doom's apparently vacated the spot. Our candidates include the likes of Storm, Nico Minoru, and Captain Marvel, and the succession process will begin in December. Space-wise, Imperial will end its four-part story in October. In its wake is a number of new cosmic-focused books, two of which were fully revealed: Planet She-Hulk from Stephanie Phillips and Aaron Kuder picks up with Jess still stuck on Sakaar and running things after promising to rule over it in Hulk's absence. And in Nova: Centurion, Jed McKay and Álvaro López pick up with Richard Rider as a drifter holding a sentient repository of the now extinct Xandarians. That repository requires a lot of energy and money, and that means Rich has to make some cash while reeling from knowing the 'terrible lie that the new Galactic Union was built upon.' Both books will be followed by Black Panther: Intergalactic in December, then Exiles and Imperial Guardians in winter 2026. The premises and creative teams for those will be revealed in the coming months. Over in Ultimate Marvel, that universe's heroes will see their first big event in Ultimate Endgame. Announced prior to SDCC, the five-issue miniseries Deniz Camp, Jonas Scharf, and other artists sees the Maker (Reed Richards) finally come out of his prison to find the heroes that've cropped up in his absence. Now that he's freed, it falls to the Ultimates, Spider-Man, Black Panther, Mei, and Wolverine to gather thier allies and fight for their world. During the Ultimate Marvel panel, Camp said the event 'has a bigger impact than most people will know' on the main and Ultimate universes, and further likened it to Crisis on Infinite Earths before Jonathan Hickman cheekily corrected him with Secret Wars. Before Ultimate Endgame begins on New Year's Eve, Hickman and Marco Checchetto's Ultimate Spider-Man will wrap after a two-year run on Christmas Eve. (The other books, such as Ultimate Black Panther and Ultimate X-Men, don't have final issues set at time of writing.) However, this isn't the complete end, as Marvel's promised that book will 'create promising roadmaps for future storytelling.' What awaits the Ultimate universe after things go down in Endgame will have to wait until 2026 draws closer. Want more io9 news? Fantastic Four star says Robert Downey Jr. is doing the "most amazing work" as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday

There are a lot of reasons to be skeptical about Robert Downey Jr.'s impending portrayal of Doctor Doom in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But according to Fantastic Four: First Steps actor Vanessa Kirby, who portrays Sue Storm in the film, the MCU veteran is more than living up to the potential of his new role as the Avengers' next great nemesis. "Oh, beyond. Beyond," Kirby tells the HappySadConfused podcast when asked about how she's getting along with RDJ as they both film the currently in production Avengers: Doomsday. "He's the most incredible human being. Soulful, deep, kind. He's been an amazing leader to us, considering we're the newbies. A lot of the others have known this world for a really long time. He's been a phenomenal leader, and he's also just doing the most amazing work." It's expected that Kirby is working closely with Downey, considering the history between Doom and the Fantastic Four. I've been a little bit on the fence about Downey's casting, as Doctor Doom is my favorite character, and I'm a little worried there will be some kind of Tony Stark twist on the MCU version of the villain. That said, so far, all signs have pointed to a version of Doom that at least looks like Jack Kirby's classic comic book design, which has never been fully embodied in any of the officially released Fantastic Four films so far. And that's certainly one of the biggest points in making sure that Robert Downey, Jr. manages to pull off a perfect performance as Doctor Doom across Avengers: Doomsday and its sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars.
