Shipwrecked! 'Doctor Odyssey' canceled after 1 season on ABC
Doctor Odyssey has hit rough waters. Entertainment Weekly has confirmed that ABC's cruise ship medical drama is ending after one season. Created by Ryan Murphy, Doctor Odyssey starred Joshua Jackson, Phillipa Soo, and Sean Teale as a groundbreaking (for network TV) potential throuple as the medical staff on a cruise ship captained by Don Johnson. The news of the show's cancellation comes in the wake of a lawsuit filed by three members of the props crew against parent company Disney and producer 20th Television alleging sexual harassment, retaliation, wrongful termination, and negligent hiring, retention, and supervising practices. Earlier this month, Caroline Mack, Alicia Haverland, and Ava Steinbrenner alleged in the suit that Tyler Patton, hired by the companies to serve as Doctor Odyssey's assistant prop master under his wife, prop master Tammie Patton, subjected them to an "unchecked campaign of sexual harassment for months." Disney, 20th Television, and Tammie and Tyler Patton did not respond to EW's requests for comment at the time. According to the suit, Tyler and several other male props employees allegedly created "an unlawful den of sexual harassment and retaliation," which the suit claims Tammie Patton not only ignored but subjected them to retaliation for complaining about. The plaintiffs alleged that Disney and 20th TV ignored their complaints, and ultimately laid off the entire props department rather than investigate and take appropriate action. Mack, Haverland, and Steinbrenner are requesting a jury Odyssey's May 15 season 1 ender delivered closure for every character, making it a surprisingly satisfying series finale. Max (Jackson) and Avery (Soo) finally declared their love for each other, and committed to being together long-distance while following their individual dreams: Avery going to medical school, Max staying on the cruise ship. And Tristan (Teale) took not being chosen by Avery surprisingly well. The lack of drama and clear conclusion for the love triangle was the most shocking part of the episode. Plus, everyone survived the tsunami wave and earthquake aftershocks, the captain was able to keep his job despite not following orders during the crisis, and they all celebrated by dancing to "Despacito" on the beach. Not a bad way to go out for a cancelation after one season. Read the original article on Entertainment Weekly

With Doctor Odyssey's Future In Limbo At ABC, Former Crew Members Are Suing Disney Over Alleged Harassment And More
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. After Doctor Odyssey's frustrating Season 1 finale in the spring 2025 TV schedule, most of the buzz around ABC's cruise ship medical drama had centered on Season 2 renewal prospects and John Oliver weighing in. Now, three former members of the crew have filed suit against both Disney and production company 20th Century Fox, alleging sexual harassment and wrongful termination, among other complaints. Caroline Mack, Alicia Haverland and Ava Steinbrenner were members of the Props Department on Doctor Odyssey in "late spring/early summer 2024," according to the lawsuit filed on May 30 in Los Angeles Superior Court (via Variety). The list of complaints included in the suit are sexual harassment; failure to prevent harassment; retaliation; wrongful termination; and negligent hiring, supervision, and retention. The three plaintiffs are seeking a jury trial. The complaints as listed in the filing originate from Tammie Patton being hired as the Prop Master of Doctor Odyssey early on while husband Tyler Patton was hired as Assistant Prop Master, giving the married couple direction over the three women's schedules, assignments, discipline, and more. The suit alleges that Disney, 20th, and Tammie Patton knowingly hired Tyler Patton despite prior allegations of sexual harassment, intoxication, and "engaging in sex on set" when he supervised the Props Department of Fox's House, the popular medical drama that starred Hugh Laurie and ran for eight seasons from 2004-2012. A lawsuit claiming as much against Patton (and others) is said to have been filed at the time. The suit goes on to allege that the Doctor Odyssey Props Department under the supervision of the Pattons was "an unlawful den of sexual harassment and retaliation" from Tyler Patton and male friends. According to this claim, the harassment took the form of sexual jokes, comments, innuendos, comments, gestures, images, and unwanted touching. Tammi Patton is said to have ignored the harassment as well as retaliated against the plaintiffs for their complaints. Third-party witnesses reportedly can corroborate claims made by the three women. Tyler Patton was ultimately fired, leading to Tammie Patton allegedly ramping up retaliation against the women. Disney and 20th are claimed to have taken the "'easy' way out choosing to eliminate not only the wrongoers" – a.k.a. both of the Pattons – but also "all of the remaining employees in the Props Department" in late August 2024 under the guise of layoffs. Their positions were reportedly then filled with new hires, with the exception of Don Bracken, who had been brought in to replace Tyler. Additionally, the women who filed the suit claim to have been blacklisted from projects at Disney and 20th. According to Deadline on the evening that news of the lawsuit went public, representatives for both Disney and 20th declined to comment on the situation. At the time of writing, it's not clear how (or if) the lawsuit will affect the future of Doctor Odyssey itself. The medical drama is currently ABC's only scripted show not to be renewed or cancelled, with the first season streaming in full with a Hulu subscription.

Joshua Jackson's 5-Word Update On Doctor Odyssey Season 2 Is Making Fans Go Overboard, And I Can Relate
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. It's been over a month since Doctor Odyssey's first season reached its destination, with a somewhat disappointing finale airing on the 2025 TV schedule, but still no decision has come down from ABC regarding the future of the Ryan Murphy creation. Fans like myself have been desperate for an update, and Joshua Jackson — who brings the Dawson's Creek vibes at Dr. Max Bankman — finally came through with five words that honestly don't make me feel any better. Joshua Jackson attended the Motion Picture & Television Fund NextGen Annual Summer Party this past weekend, and as he walked the red carpet, someone can be heard commenting that they hope Doctor Odyssey would get renewed for Season 2. In the clip on X, you can see his face scrunch up, and he shrugs a couple of times before responding: They haven't told us yet. I don't love this response, because there was no confidence in the answer; it didn't sound to me like he was expecting to hear from Ryan Murphy any day now, and honestly, the facial expression read more like, 'not happening,' than 'prepare to set sail,' at least in my opinion. I'm just speculating here, but it seems like these actors — Joshua Jackson in addition to Phillipa Soo, Sean Teale, Don Johnson and the rest of the cast and crew — would kind of need to know something about the state of their employment. Either way, I'm not the only Doctor Odyssey fan reading into Jackson's words, as the comments were full of doom and frustration: I need them to just make a decision already it's driving me insane – @Fruit_Batt_ Maybe it's already cancelled and he is not allowed to say 😬 – @targetconfusion Abc put the series in the freezer and forgot about it 😔 – @FinitAaAaaaaA Keeping them + us in limbo is sick behavior😭 – @just_zutara Bruh 😭 what the hell is this??? JUST GIVE US SOME CLARITY FFS – @Lylyjen Honestly, if it's over, just put us out of our misery already! One fan referenced the wild theory that The Odyssey isn't real and that Max is stuck in a COVID-induced purgatory, hallucinating the unrealistic high-seas medical emergencies and the stunt-casted spring-breakers begging to give him the ride of his life. X user @Mietar cleverly commented: Turns out it was actually us viewers in purgatory this whole time 😭 Ahead of the Season 1 finale, the situation didn't seem so dire, as ABC/Hulu executive Craig Erwich indicated that the decision was in Ryan Murphy's hands, with creative conversations ongoing with the busy TV producer. However, weeks later — and especially with the sexual harassment lawsuit filed by three former Doctor Odyssey crew members — it feels a little less likely that we're cruising toward good news. That's a lot of speculation for just five words from Joshua Jackson, but you know, we're just a little lost at sea here, wondering if we'll ever get that musical episode and reminiscing about the days of our favorite ABC primetime throuple (are there others?). While we wait for something more official to come down, Doctor Odyssey's first season is available to stream with a Hulu subscription.

‘Doctor Odyssey' Canceled at ABC After One Season
'Doctor Odyssey' has been canceled after one season on ABC. Since April, the Ryan Murphy-created medical drama has been the network's only scripted series for which a renewal or cancellation had not been announced, and Variety has now confirmed that the cast's contracts expire on Monday with no move from ABC to put the series back on its schedule for the upcoming year. More from Variety NBA Draft 2025 Livestream: How To Watch the Player Selection Event Online Scott Speedman Lands Lead Role in 'RJ Decker' Pilot at ABC Oklahoma City Thunder's Game 7 Win Hits 16.4 Million Viewers, Biggest NBA Final Game in Six Years The news also comes after three of the show's former crew members filed a lawsuit against Disney and 20th Television on May 30, alleging that the studio enabled an 'unchecked campaign of sexual harassment for months' and accusing assistant prop master Tyler Patton of making 'sexual jokes, innuendos, comments, sexual gestures and images' in addition to 'unwanted touching' including 'openly grabbing a visiting female employee's buttocks.' 'Doctor Odyssey' starred Joshua Jackson as Max Bankman, a doctor on a luxury cruise line called the Odyssey, who works with his staff to address complex medical emergencies miles from land. The cast also included Phillipa Soo as Avery Morgan, a nurse practioner; Sean Teale as Tristan Silva, a nurse; and Don Johnson as Robert Massey, the ship's captain. Among the recurring cast was Jacqueline Toboni as engineer Rosie, Marcus Emanuel Mitchell as first officer Spencer Monroe, Rick Cosnett as housekeeping head Corey and Laura Harrier as chef Vivian. The show also frequently featured prominent guest stars, such as Rachel Dratch, Shania Twain, Kelsea Ballerini, Angela Bassett and more. 20th Television produced 'Doctor Odyssey' in association with Ryan Murphy Television. Murphy wrote the series with Jon Robin Baitz and Joe Baken. All three served as executive producers alongside Jackson, Johnson, director Paris Barclay, Eric Paquette, Alexis Martin Woodall, Eric Kovtun, Scott Robertson and Nissa Diederich. Doctor Odyssey: 5 Ways to Save This Sinking Ship in a Potential Season 2
The odds aren't looking good for a Doctor Odyssey renewal, but we're here to throw Ryan Murphy's seafaring soap a life preserver. The ABC sudser wrapped its freshman run back in May, and has yet to be renewed by the network for a Season 2 — and we worry it won't be given the luxury of a second chance. To start, Season 1 averaged only 4.8 million weekly viewers (with delayed playback). And, out of the six dramas that ABC aired this TV season, Doctor Odyssey outdrew only Grey's Anatomy in total viewers. Secondly, Season 1 ended with an episode that felt a whole lot like a series finale. (Read our recap.) It would make perfect sense for the series to be cancelled, or simply be lost at sea forever without any official word on its status. Here's What We Know So Far Roseanne Barr Claims The Conners Wanted Her Back - Here's What the EPs Told Us About a Possible Cameo Despite all signs indicating that this ship is sinking, I'm not giving up hope on this glitzy guilty pleasure. That being said, I do have some constructive feedback. Below, I'm breaking down five ways to steer the Odyssey in the right direction so that the series can cruise through a successful sophomore run. I simply will not — no, cannot — let the Fever Dream Theory die. And it's not only because I strive to be 100% correct on all things at all times. I truly do believe that the series needs some depth, and the Fever Dream Theory would be the perfect antidote. Yes, it's fun to watch a frothy little show about hot doctors rescuing people at sea, but, surprisingly enough, even hot people can get stale. What's keeping us invested in our crew? In our passengers? In the ship herself? We need a stronger foundation — something bigger than Avery's non-pregnancy pregnancy — to keep us watching and keep us wondering what might happen next. The show needs to confirm our theory, so we can continue to debate the intricacies and easter eggs that arise in life-and-death limbo. By confirming at least some aspect of our theory is real, the show has plenty of opportunity to play with the specifics: Is this ship purgatory proper? Or is it heaven? Is it hell? Are we dead, alive or barely breathing?! The possibilities are as vast as the ocean on which the Odyssey cruises. The demise of 9-1-1′s Bobby Nash (played by Peter Krause) was one of the most shocking TV deaths of the year! But if Doctor Odyssey would just commit to the Fever Dream Theory, the character doesn't have to be gone forever. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Bring Bobby on board! The man may have exited the Earthly realm, but his soul might still be searching for his final resting place. With Bobby on board, the ship can welcome him into their crew, creating more opportunities for dynamic conflict, romance and friendship! Plus, Krause's star power and top-notch acting could do wonders in keeping this thing afloat. And I wouldn't stop there. The group dynamic needs to be more complex; we can't keep beating the throuple horse. Why not bring on Adrianne Palicki as a series regular? (She was, after all, one of the best Season 1 guest stars!) During her short time on board, Palicki's Brooke forged independent relationships with both Avery and Max. Should she come on full-time, her friendship with Avery could offer some much-needed emotional high points, while her flirtatious dynamic with Max could raise the stakes among this romantically woeful group. The series could even bring on some of the other supporting characters as series regulars: Heather (Shania Twain) and Lenore (Gina Gershon) are just a couple of possibilities. If I have to hear Miss Avery (Phillipa Soo) announce she wants to go to med school one more time, I'll throw myself overboard. Beyond her desire to become a doctor, what do we know about this woman? What are her imperfections? Her unique neuroses? What does she like about Tristan and Max? What is she looking for in a romantic partner? Avery's entire Season 1 personality revolved around her male counterparts' perception of her, and her pregnancy. (A pregnancy that, by the way, ended up being a false alarm.) Avery repeatedly demanded time and space to think over her future, but her actual feelings or opinions about a possible pregnancy, a possible relationship and or her possible career remained a mystery. Let's give this girl the opportunity to go a little deeper so that we can identify with her a little more. The series started on such a strong note: Iodine poisoning from shrimp? Silly! A fractured penis? Outrageous! Give us more of that! The sea-mergencies lost their luster the longer Season 1 went on. Incorporating more chaos on board could go one of two ways: The Doctor Odyssey creative team could set out to tell the absolute strangest medical mysteries that have ever actually existed, or they could completely make up emergencies that probably would never actually happen but would make for thrilling TV. I'm talking innie belly buttons so deep that they leak all over the pool deck, or passengers getting dragged behind the ship after tripping over a rope. (And they survive!) Let's consult Saturday Night Live's Sarah Sherman to up the ick factor so we can get this ship rockin' and rollin' a la the Triangle of Sadness vomit scene. How Doctor Odyssey could air an entire season without tapping into the vocal talents of Broadway star Phillipa Soo is nothing short of criminal. Did you see her at the Tonys during Hamilton's 10th anniversary performance? The woman is an acclaimed vocalist! A star! How could that be ignored? For Doctor Odyssey — a show that strives to deliver a high-octane, campy, glitzy hour of television each week — a musical episode just makes sense. Even if Soo wasn't a part of the equation, I'd demand it. The fact that it might actually be good is just an added bonus.
