Miami Dolphins' Bayron Matos injured at training camp, taken off field by helicopter

MIAMI GARDENS — Miami Dolphins offensive tackle Bayron Matos was injured during the first practice of training camp and taken away by helicopter to a hospital. According to the Dolphins, he is in stable condition. Matos was immobilized and strapped to a board before being carted off the practice field by first responders. Fellow offensive linemen grouped around out of concern for their teammate. Matos is the team's international player — he's from the Dominican Republic — and does not count toward the roster limit. It is unclear how he was injured or what his specific injury is. Matos, who is 6-foot-7, 334 pounds, grew up in the Dominican Republic before moving to the United States in high school where he played basketball. He played college basketball for the New Mexico Lobos and South Florida Bulls from 2019–22, before switching to football in 2022. He started on defense but was switched to the offensive line. Matos was upbeat during a session with reporters in May 2024, flashing a nonstop smile and joking about how the only English he knew when he arrived in the United States was "I'm hungry." Surveying a large, curious media contingent he'd drawn, he said, 'Man, it feels good to be here, all this love. Look at y'all. That's good. I love that. Man, it's opportunity. They gave me the opportunity to be here. I'm really grateful for that. Not a lot of people take a shot on a guy that never played the sport before. And what the organization saw, one thing: the work ethic. Respect. And give everything I have on the field.' More: Miami Dolphins' Mike McDaniel 'elated' to add Minkah Fitzpatrick, Tyreek Hill has matured Matos is a participant in the NFL's International Player Pathway Program (IPPP), having signed with the Dolphins in 2024. Established in 2017, the program gives players a chance to earn a roster spot while not counting against the 16-man practice squad limit during the season. 'I want to be, first of all, one of the first Dominicans — the best Dominican to play in the NFL,' Matos said. Matos did not appear in any games in 2024. He was added to the practice squad last August, then signed to a reserve/future contract by the Dolphins in January. Pope invites Dominicans ‘listen attentively to the Holy Spirit'

Pope Leo XIV assures Dominicans taking part in the General Chapter of Provincial Priors of his closeness in prayer, while inviting them to be attentive to the voice of the Holy Spirit and to strengthen their commitment to serving the Body of Christ. Jul 24, 2025 General Chapter of Provincial Priors of the Order of Preachers (Dominicans) By Christopher WellsPope Leo says he is praying for Dominican provincial priors gathered in Krakow for their General Chapter. In a letter addressed to Fr Gerard Timoner, Master of the Order of Preachers, the Holy Father assures them of his confidence 'that these days of grace may be an opportunity for renewal, rooted in the hope that never disappoints and the knowledge that the Lord has called you as preachers to proclaim the Good News amid today's unique challenges.' Listening to the Holy Spirit He goes on to highlight the theme for the meeting, which aims to address the Dominican charism of preaching especially to 'four audiences: those who do not yet know Jesus; the Christian faithful; those who have distanced themselves from Christ; and young people in these situations,' saying it is particular timely. 'I pray,' the Pope writes, 'that your deliberations may allow you to listen attentively to the Holy Spirit, Who continues to guide the Church in the fullness of truth.' Faithful to the charism and spirituality of Saint Dominic Pope Leo went on to express his hope that the Dominican priors would strengthen their 'commitment to serving the Body of Christ in the evangelical way of life chosen by St Dominic.' 'May your shared experience of fraternity and prayer strengthen the bonds of communion that unite you as Dominicans and inspire you to live ever more fully your vocation as contemplative preachers,' he writes. He adds his conviction that they 'will undoubtedly continue to carry out your mission in the heart of the Church' in fidelity to the charism and spirituality of St Dominic. Pope Leo concludes his letter by entrusting the General Chapter to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary and imparting his blessing to all the members of the Dominican Order.--Vatican News

At least 4 dead, 20 missing after boat sinks off Dominican Republic

Four refugees and migrants have died and about 20 were missing after their boat capsized off the coast of the Dominican Republic in the Caribbean, authorities said, as Haitians and Dominicans continue to take life-threatening risks to make the crossing to what they hope is a better life. The Dominican civil defence authority was quoted by AFP news agency as saying on Friday that 17 other people were rescued from the boat, which was carrying about 40 people and headed for Puerto Rico, a United States territory. The Caribbean nation's navy said it had rescued 10 Dominicans and seven Haitians. A child was among the survivors. So-called 'yola' migrant boats, such as the one that ran into trouble, are constructed from wood or fibreglass and do not comply with safety regulations, according to authorities. Refugees and migrants pay as much as $7,000 for a one-way trip to Puerto Rico from the Dominican Republic, which shares the island of Hispaniola with crisis-torn Haiti. Illegal migration from the Dominican Republic to Puerto Rico has been a growing phenomenon in the last decade. In 2022, at least five people drowned and another 66 were rescued in an incident involving a suspected human smuggling boat near the uninhabited island of Mona, west of Puerto Rico. Mona Island, a nature reserve, is located between the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico and has, over the years, been used by smugglers carrying people between the two. Those on that route are typically Dominican or Haitian.
