Experts want study to stop Paroda flooding, Don Bosco's 2015 paper resurfaces

Margao: Following the submergence of Paroda village on Thursday, which necessitated the diversion of traffic along the Margao-Quepem road through Chandor, engineering experts have renewed their call for a study to address the problem of annual flooding during the monsoon. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The issue has once again highlighted the inadequacy of the flood-prevention measures undertaken by the PWD on the Paroda stretch of the road. Despite the PWD raising the vulnerable road stretch two years ago, the measure proved largely ineffective. A decade-old academic study by the final-year civil engineering students from Don Bosco College of Engineering, Fatorda, has resurfaced as a potential roadmap for long-term flood management solutions. The 2015 dissertation, titled 'Flood Management of Paroda Village', presents a scientifically backed study. The project, supervised by assistant professor Satyesh Kakodkar, proposed a sophisticated flood-diversion system based on extensive topographic and hydrographic surveys of the Kushawati river. The study's core recommendation involves constructing diversion headworks 1,123m upstream of the flood-prone Paroda-Avedem bridge, coupled with a 3,155m diversion canal designed to channel excess water away from the vulnerable area. Particularly significant is the study's proposal for an offline storage pond system, which would temporarily store diverted floodwater in designated areas of the floodplain before releasing it back to the river or alternative watercourses. This approach aims to avoid the submergence of surrounding inhabited areas while effectively managing peak discharge periods. The Don Bosco study also identified solutions aimed at improving water flow capacity during heavy rain. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now These included strategic dredging of the river at Caurem — 200m of riverbed clearing to a depth of 0.3m, extending 100m upstream and downstream of the Caurem bridge. Engineering experts who analysed the study pointed out that its observations remain strikingly relevant today. They have made a strong pitch for state govt to commission a flood management study. They have suggested that either the PWD or the water resources department undertake this research directly or engage the civil engineering departments of Goa's engineering colleges. 'Such a commissioned study would build upon the foundational work already completed by the Don Bosco students, incorporating modern hydrological modelling techniques and climate change projections to develop robust, long-term solutions,' said a civil engineer specialising in hydraulic engineering.

This longshot from North Jersey has a chance to impress the New York Giants at rookie camp

EAST RUTHERFORD - Christian Dremel is embracing this life as an NFL long shot. The wide receiver and punt returner spent last weekend in Kansas City, one of 60 rookie tryouts - yes, you read that correctly - fighting for reps and a chance to impress Andy Reid and Chiefs' brass. Advertisement Despite a good showing, the quest for a contract was an empty one. That sets the stage for another audition plenty closer to home. From a walk-on at Rutgers from Don Bosco to a shot at the NFL, Dremel hopes to make the most of his tryout at the New York Giants' rookie camp this weekend. "I guess I'm not supposed to be here, but I feel like I've been through this my whole career," Dremel said. "This is obviously a dream come true just to have this opportunity, to have this chance and compete to be on one of the 32 teams in the NFL. Had a chance to put on a Chiefs helmet and run around and play football last week, and now I'm excited to try and make the Giants. Something I've learned, when you're fighting for everything, you've got to take it one day at a time by focusing on one thing at a time. Every play, every day, adapt to that mindset." Rebilas-Imagn Images Rookies across the league are reporting for their first pro workouts. For some, their names were called in the draft. This will be the first time for potential franchise cornerstones like Abdul Carter and Jaxson Dart to step on the field as Giants. Advertisement For others, undrafted free agents signed as the festivities finished up two weeks ago. Then there are those like Dremel, determined to forge ahead in spite of the odds against them. St Joseph At Don Bosco Hs Football 'From when he was at Don Bosco, I coached against him, and at the time, it was like, 'Who's this little runt, all of 115 pounds or so, making every play,' he made you notice him,' former Bergen Catholic coach and current Syracuse quarterbacks coach Nunzio Campanile told and The Record. 'I ended up going to Rutgers, and was involved in recruiting, we wanted to build up the walk-on pool, and to me, [Dremel] was one of those guys, he has such a strong will and great work ethic, he could handle that challenge. I remember telling him, 'You have to make it so we can't not give you a scholarship,' and that was the mindset.' Advertisement It's not an easy road to travel, but Dremel knows it is possible. Elijah Chatman arrived for Giants rookie camp a year ago with promise of untapped potential and a promise from renowned defensive line coach Andre Patterson that he would get a fair look. He wound up earning a contract, then a spot on the 53-man roster and played in all 17 games with three starts. Giants coach Brian Daboll showed highlight plays from Chatman and Ryder Anderson, who made the team as an undrafted rookie three years ago, to the rookies in a team meeting Friday morning. Could Dremel impress the Giants enough? Maybe. The 5-foot-9, 180-pounder had a strong performance at the team's local pro day as a punt returner and Big Blue did not draft a wide receiver, so for depth purposes, general manager Joe Schoen may be open to bringing in receivers to challenge the back end of the position. Advertisement Two seasons ago, Dremel took a significant step forward in production at Rutgers, as he started all 12 games and finished as the team's leading receiver with 34 catches for 440 yards and three touchdowns. He had just one catch during the 2022 season before his breakout. Then, after deciding to return to Rutgers for one final year, Dremel ended up spending much of the season doing whatever he could to maximize his opportunities. Eat Rutherford, NJ -- May 9, 2025 -- Wide receiver, Christian Dremel during practice at Giants Rookie Minicamp. "Preparation - that's the way I'm gonna impress," Dremel said. "I'm not going to walk out there, and people are going to look at me and say, 'Oh wow, who's this guy?' My approach to meetings, how I carry myself with the other guys, that's going to matter. Football wise, it's about running routes, catching the ball, showing great fundamentals and not making the moment bigger than it needs to be." Like countless others across the league, that's what this comes down to: Dremel just wants a chance. Advertisement "This is a big deal in its own right, I know that," he said. "But I've prepared my whole life for this. I'm ready to give it my best shot and see where it takes me." Khandu pays homage to local hero who chose to save others

1 2 3 Guwahati: Arunachal Pradesh CM Pema Khandu lauded IAF corporal Tage Hailyang on Thursday for his exceptional bravery during the Pahalgam attack , where he prioritised others' safety, despite having a chance to escape. While Hailyang's wife, who was holidaying with him, remains distraught, Khandu shared his valiant story on his X account. "In the face of grave danger, Tage Hailyang demonstrated exceptional courage. He had the chance to escape but chose instead to protect those around him. Risking his own life, he guided civilians to safety, helping them escape the line of fire," Khandu wrote on his 'X' handle after visiting Tajang village in Arunachal's Lower Subansiri district on Thursday morning to honour Hailyang. Hailyang's mortal remains arrived at his home at Tajang village, near the district headquarters in Ziro, on Thursday morning. Praising Hailyang's act as 'rare' and 'inspiring', Khandu met his wife, parents and family members to offer condolences. As Hailyang's remains reached his residence at 7.30 am by road from Assam's Tezpur, villagers gathered, shouting "Tage Hailyang Amar Rahe" and "Pakistan Murdabad". His body arrived in Guwahati, via New Delhi, at approximately 11 pm on Wednesday and was received by Assam minister Jayanta Mallabaruah. It was then transported to the IAF base in Tezpur early on Thursday, before proceeding to Lower Subansiri. District administration officials confirmed that Hailyang's last rites will be performed in the village on Friday. Acknowledging Hailyang's supreme sacrifice, Khandu announced employment for a member of Hailyang's family, Rs 50 lakh financial assistance and construction of a permanent memorial in his native village. Tage Hailyang's educational journey began in Ziro and Haryana's Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram, followed by graduation from Don Bosco, Itanagar, before joining the Indian Air Force in 2017. He was scheduled to begin his new posting in Assam shortly. "We strongly condemn this heinous act of terrorism. Pakistan's continued sheltering of terrorists is a grave threat to global peace," Khandu said, commending Prime Minister Narendra Modi's firm stance. "I am confident that under his leadership, the nation will respond with the strength and resolve that such a grave sacrifice demands," Khandu added. "Late Tage Hailyang's legacy will endure. His name will forever be etched in the history of Arunachal as a symbol of valour and his sacrifice will inspire generations to come," he added. Accompanying Khandu were Arunachal East MP Tapir Gao, BJP state president Kaling Moyong, Minister Gabriel D Wangsu, and MLAs Hage Appa and Nakap Nalo, who paid their final respects to Hailyang. "We strongly condemn this barbaric act of terrorism and salute the unparalleled bravery and courage of our fallen hero," Tapir Gao said.
