How Don Nelson will ‘protest' Luka Doncic trade at award ceremony

The post How Don Nelson will 'protest' Luka Doncic trade at award ceremony appeared first on ClutchPoints. Former Dallas Mavericks coach Don Nelson is making an addition to the list of awards that he already has. Nelson is the winner of this year's Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award, which was announced on June 8. Advertisement When he gets his award, he plans on paying tribute to some of his fashion choices by wearing a pair of Luka Doncic's signature shoes, according to Marc Stein. Along with the shoes, he plans on wearing a tuxedo jacket, jeans, and a necklace of shells from the island of Ni'ihau. The reason for Nelson wearing Doncic's shoes is to share how he wasn't a fan of the Mavericks trading him to the Los Angeles Lakers. 'Luka is my dear friend,' Nelson said. 'And to protest his being traded from the Mavericks to L.A., I'm going to wear a pair of his new shoes. I wanted to mention that. 'My philosophy was always, when you've got a great player, he's yours for a lifetime. You don't get rid of great players. When that happened, I was pretty disappointed.' Don Nelson plans on making fashion statement Nelson is not the only person who was disappointed about the Mavericks making the trade, and it's safe to say almost the entire city of Dallas may have felt some type of way about the move. Nonetheless, Nelson seems to be excited about receiving the lifetime achievement award, and he mentioned that he may be one of his best. Advertisement 'I think it's one of the best honors I ever had,' Nelson said. 'I'm very proud to get it. 'I haven't had shoes on for six years. And I haven't been on a plane for about seven. But I figured that this would be something I should probably be there for.' Nelson is the second-winningest head coach in league history behind Gregg Popovich, and he's been on the bench for teams such as the Mavericks, New York Knicks, Milwaukee Bucks, and Golden State Warriors. Don Nelson doesn't hold back on Mavericks' ‘tremendous mistake' of trading Luka Doncic

The post Don Nelson doesn't hold back on Mavericks' 'tremendous mistake' of trading Luka Doncic appeared first on ClutchPoints. In the history of the Dallas Mavericks franchise, former head coach Don Nelson was instrumental in establishing them as a consistent playoff team in the early 2000s. Nelson helped unlock Dirk Nowitzki and helped shape him into the greatest player in franchise history. Being one of the best offensive innovators in league history, Nelson is certainly deserving of winning the 2025 Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award, the winner of which was announced earlier today. Advertisement Suffice to say, the Mavericks franchise wouldn't be where they are today without Nelson's contributions. This is why Nelson is disappointed more than ever on the current state of the team. While the Mavs recently won the first overall pick, putting them in position to draft Cooper Flagg as some sort of mulligan for the biggest mistake in franchise history, Nelson isn't pleased whatsoever with their decision to trade away Luka Doncic back in February. 'I think it was a tremendous mistake for the Dallas franchise to trade him — and I want everybody to know that,' Nelson said in his press conference prior to Game 2 of the Indiana Pacers and Oklahoma City Thunder's NBA Finals clash. Nelson has formed a close relationship with Doncic, so it's not exactly a huge surprise to see him to go to bat for his guy. And it's not like Nelson's sentiment is unpopular; the Mavericks continue to be widely chastised for their egregious decision to let go of Doncic without making it known to the whole league — which could have drummed up a major bidding war. Advertisement Over four months have passed since the Mavericks shocked the world, and there are times where it still doesn't feel real that Doncic is now a member of the Los Angeles Lakers. Only time will tell if the Mavs end up being right, but this trade is viewed as a disaster for a very good reason. Mavericks hope for a quick turnaround © Jerome Miron-Imagn Images At the very least, all hope is not lost for the Mavericks. They have an incredible collection of talent in the frontcourt; Anthony Davis, Daniel Gafford, Dereck Lively II, and PJ Washington comprise their impressive core. And they're (presumably) about to add Flagg to the mix. Advertisement All the Mavericks need is for Kyrie Irving to return to full strength and for them to bolster their backcourt, re-balancing the roster by perhaps trading a few of their big men in exchange for some guard help. Warriors Turn Heads with Major Announcement on Sunday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Golden State Warriors have widely been regarded as one of the best teams in the NBA over the past several seasons, led by head coach Steve Kerr. Advertisement Kerr has led the Warriors to four NBA titles while winning the NBA Coach of the Year award in 2016. He has been able to influence the Golden State franchise at extreme levels, helping put on a show with some of the league's best players, such as Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and Kevin Durant. Several years before Kerr became the head coach of the Warriors, his first head coaching job in the NBA, Golden State was led by head coach Don Nelson. Nelson served as the head coach of the Golden State Warriors from 2006 to 2010. That marked Nelson's second stint in Golden State, having previously served as the head coach of the organization from 1988 to 1995. Advertisement Years after his retirement from the league, the NBA paid respect to Nelson. On Sunday, the NBA announced and the Golden State Warriors ultimately reposted that Don Nelson has been named the winner of the Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award. "31 NBA seasons as a head coach," posted the official social media account of the Golden State Warriors. "1,335 regular season wins. An all-time great NBA legacy. Congrats to Don Nelson on being named the recipient of the 2025 Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award." His head coaching career started in the 1976-77 season with the Milwaukee Bucks, and he spent 11 seasons there while guiding some very good and underrated teams. Today's fans perhaps know him best as the head coach of those Dallas Mavericks teams in the early 2000s that were among the first to play modern-day "pace and space" basketball. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2012 as a head coach. At the press conference, Nelson showed solidarity with the Mavericks franchise while protesting the trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in February. He wore a pair of Doncic's sneakers and had the following message. "Luka, too, my dear friend, in fact, I want everybody to know I am wearing Luka's shoes, his new shoes from Nike," Nelson said. "Just got on the market. I'm wearing them in protest for the trade from Dallas. I think it was a tremendous mistake by the Dallas franchise to trade him -- and I want everybody to know that." Doncic, in turn, tweaked Nelson a bit with a post on Instagram. Luka with a message for former Mavs Head Coach Don Nelson on his IG story: 'Congratulations Coach! Nice shoes!' — Mavs Film Room 🐴🎥 (@MavsFilmRoom) June 9, 2025 Before Nelson became a head coach, he had a successful 14-year playing career in the NBA. He actually spent two seasons early in his career with the Lakers, but he played 13 seasons with the Boston Celtics, a franchise he won five world championships with in the 1960s and 1970s. His last coaching gig ended with the 2009-10 season when he was at the helm of the Golden State Warriors during Stephen Curry's rookie year.

NBA legend Don Nelson wears Luka Doncic shoes to protest 'tremendous mistake' by Mavericks

Don Nelson, the former Dallas Mavericks head coach, accepted the Chuck Daily Lifetime Achievement Award before Game 2 of the NBA Finals on Sunday. Nelson, who has been living in Hawaii since being away from the game, carried a message with him for the franchise he used to lead on the court. During his press conference, Nelson made sure everyone in the building knew that he was wearing Luka Doncic's new shoes from Nike. Why? He thinks the Mavericks and GM Nico Harrison made a "tremendous mistake" trading him to the Los Angeles Lakers. "I want everybody to know I'm wearing Luka's shoes, his new shoes from Nike…and I'm wearing them in protest for the trade from Dallas," Nelson told the crowd. "I think it was a tremendous mistake by the Dallas franchise to trade him. I want everybody to know that." Nelson is a part of a mass group that believes Harrison made the wrong move in trading Doncic to Los Angeles, which was one of the most shocking trades in recent memory anywhere in professional sports. Mavericks fans let Harrison know it, too, as chants filled stadiums home and away, while a group of fans even held a fake funeral outside American Airlines Center days after the deal went down in February. Dallas, though, may have gotten bailed out after the NBA Draft Lottery saw them win the No. 1 overall pick. The Mavericks will presumably take Duke's Cooper Flagg later this month. Still, Mavericks fans weren't happy to see Doncic, who helped lead the team to the NBA Finals last year, moving out west. While the Lakers didn't make a deep NBA Playoffs run, Doncic had similar numbers with the Lakers compared to the Mavericks. He averaged 28.2 points per game (28.1 in Dallas) with 8.1 rebounds and 7.5 assists per game over 28 contests. Nelson and many others have their opinions, but what's done is done now for the Mavericks. Time will tell who exactly won the trade. Nelson is a Hall of Famer coach, and one of the best in league history with San Antonio Spurs legend Gregg Popovich being the only one with more coaching wins all-time. He had 1,335 regular-season wins and 75 more in the playoffs during his time coaching the Milwaukee Bucks (1976-87), Golden State Warriors (1988-94), New York Knicks (1995-96), Mavericks (1997-2005), and Warriors once more from 2006-10.
