Key US security partner strengthens ties with Chinese military
Vietnam, a key security partner of the United States in Asia, is participating in a historic joint army exercise with China as Vietnamese officials say the cooperation between the Chinese military and the Vietnamese military has 'deepened.' In a Sunday statement, China's Ministry of National Defense announced, 'The ground forces of China and Vietnam will conduct a joint training exercise in Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region in mid-to-late July.' China's Ministry of National Defense noted that the training exercise, which is expected to concentrate on 'joint border patrol,' is the first joint army training exercise to include both Vietnam and China. 'The exercise aims to enhance mutual learning and exchange of border patrol experiences and further deepen practical cooperation between the two militaries,' China's Ministry of National Defense added. According to Newsweek, the joint army training exercise is the third time Chinese and Vietnamese military forces have held joint engagements since the two countries held two joint patrols in the Beibu Gulf in April. Newsweek reported that Chinese Defense Minister Admiral Dong Jun previously claimed that the Chinese and Vietnamese militaries should be 'aligned with the relationship orientation of 'comrades and brothers,' further enhance strategic communication, deepen exchanges at all levels and in all fields, improve the quality and effectiveness of border defense friendly exchanges, continuously expand pragmatic cooperation, and make greater contributions to accelerating the construction of a strategically significant China-Vietnam community with a shared future.' The Vietnamese defense minister also noted that the cooperation between the military 'has been continuously deepened and achieved remarkable results.' 'Vietnam is willing to join hands with China to build a more pragmatic pillar of security cooperation and bring more benefits to the two countries and their people,' the Vietnamese defense minister added. Vietnam's 'deepened' relationship with the Chinese military comes after the U.S. State Department released a statement earlier this year regarding the security partnership between the United States and Vietnam. In January, the State Department said, 'The U.S. security relationship with Vietnam continues to expand and the two countries share a common vision for the future of a free and open Indo-Pacific region. Our security cooperation is based on our mutual commitment to deepen defense cooperation and shared resolve to address regional security challenges.'

Iran's defense minister thanks China for support on first foreign trip since Israel conflict
Hong Kong CNN — Iran's defense minister has traveled to diplomatic and economic ally China on his first reported trip abroad since a 12-day clash with Israel that briefly dragged the US into a new regional conflict. Aziz Nasirzadeh is one of nine defense ministers that Chinese state media say attended a gathering of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), a China- and Russia-led regional security grouping that has grown in prominence as Beijing and Moscow look to build alternative international blocs to those backed by the United States. The two-day gathering began Wednesday in the Chinese coastal city of Qingdao, a day after a ceasefire between Iran and Israel quelled what had been days of aerial assaults between the two, punctuated by a US strike on three Iranian nuclear facilities. The SCO gathering coincided with a meeting of NATO leaders at The Hague, where US President Donald Trump said the US would meet with Iran 'next week' about a potential nuclear agreement. Beijing's gathering, part of events for its rotating SCO chairmanship, spotlighted China's role as a key international player, even as it remained largely on the sidelines of the Israel-Iran conflict – and the importance Tehran places on its relationship with Beijing. Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun did not directly address the conflict in remarks to gathering nations Wednesday, as reported by Chinese state media, but aimed to position China as a country with an alternative vision for global security. 'Unilateralism and protectionism are surging, while hegemonic, high-handed, and bullying acts severely undermine the international order, making these practices the biggest sources of chaos and harm,' Dong said, employing language typically used by Beijing to criticize the US. The Chinese defense chief called for SCO countries – which, in addition to China and Russia, include India, Iran, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Belarus – to enhance coordination and 'defend international fairness and justice' and 'uphold global strategic stability.' Attending countries 'expressed a strong willingness to consolidate and develop military collaboration,' according to China's official news agency Xinhua. Iran's Nasirzadeh 'expressed gratitude to China for its understanding and support of Iran's legitimate stance,' Xinhua also reported. The minister 'hopes that China will continue to uphold justice and play an even greater role in maintaining the current ceasefire and easing regional tensions,' he was quoted as saying. It's also backed a ceasefire and criticized Washington's foray into the conflict as a 'heavy blow to the international nuclear non-proliferation regime.' A key diplomatic and economic backer of Iran, Beijing has moved to further deepen collaboration in recent years, including holding joint naval drills. Chinese officials have long voiced opposition to US sanctions on Iran and criticized the US withdrawal from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal. China remains by far Iran's largest energy buyer, though it has not reported purchases of Iranian oil in its official customs data since 2022, according to analysts. Chinese-made chemicals needed to produce missile fuel have been delivered to Iran in recent months, CNN reporting shows. In recent days, China has appeared unwilling to become further entangled in the conflict past its diplomatic efforts, analysts say, instead using the situation as another opportunity to paint itself as a responsible global player and the US as a force for instability. When asked at a regular Chinese Defense Ministry press briefing Thursday whether Beijing would consider providing material military support to Iran as an SCO member, ministry spokesman Zhang Xiaogang told CNN that 'China is willing to work with all parties to play a constructive role in maintaining peace and stability in the Middle East.' Founded in 2001 by China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan to combat terrorism and promote border security, the SCO has grown in recent years in line with Beijing and Moscow's shared ambition to push back against a US alliance system they see as suppressing them. While not an alliance, the group says it aims to 'make joint efforts to maintain and ensure peace, security and stability in the region.' The SCO has long been seen as limited, however, by overlapping interests and frictions between members, including Pakistan and India, which earlier this year engaged in a violent conflict, as well as China and India, which have longstanding border tensions. The meet in Qingdao did not adopt a joint statement due to lack of consensus on referring to 'terrorism,' Reuters reported India's foreign ministry spokesman as saying. Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh also attended the Qingdao meeting, the first visit from an Indian defense chief to China since a deadly 2020 border clash between the two countries. The Singh-Dong meeting comes amid ongoing efforts by New Delhi and Beijing to restore normalcy in bilateral ties and implement disengagement commitments made last year. The broader Indian engagement in China this week also included high-level diplomatic and defence dialogues. On Friday, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met his Chinese counterpart Admiral Dong Jun on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Defence Ministers Meeting. During the meeting, Singh stressed the need for effective border management and a permanent resolution to the boundary issue by revitalising the existing mechanisms between the two countries. During the meeting, the two leaders held 'in-depth discussions' on the need to maintain peace and tranquillity along the Indo-China border. Rajnath Singh acknowledged the work being undertaken by the two nations to bring back a semblance of normalcy in the bilateral relations, according to the Ministry of Defence press release. Rajnath Singh highlighted the necessity of solving complex issues through a structured roadmap of permanent engagement and de-escalation. He emphasised the need to create good neighbourly conditions to achieve the best mutual benefits and to cooperate for stability in Asia and the world. He called for bridging the trust deficit created after the 2020 Border standoff by taking action on the ground. In a press release, the Ministry of Defence stated, 'The two Ministers agreed to continue consultations at various levels to achieve progress on issues related to disengagement, de-escalation, border management and eventual delimitation through existing mechanisms.' India and China had reached an agreement in October on patrolling arrangements in the Depsang Plains and Demchok, two friction points along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). The understanding was reached after earlier disengagement in other friction points in eastern Ladakh following meetings at diplomatic and military levels. During the meeting with his Chinese counterpart, Rajnath Singh appreciated the resumption of the Kailash Manasarovar yatra after a gap of five years. He highlighted the important milestone of reaching 75 years since the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries. He also briefed his Chinese counterpart on the terrorist attack carried out against innocent civilians in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam on April 22 and India's Operation Sindoor aimed at dismantling the terrorist networks in Pakistan, according to the Ministry of Defence press release. In a post on X, Singh stated, 'Held talks with Admiral Dong Jun, the Defence Minister of China, on the sidelines of the SCO Defence Ministers' Meeting in Qingdao. We had a constructive and forward-looking exchange of views on issues about bilateral relations. Expressed my happiness at the restarting of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra after a gap of nearly six years. It is incumbent on both sides to maintain this positive momentum and avoid adding new complexities in the bilateral relationship.' Rajnath Singh gifted a Madhubani painting from Bihar to his Chinese counterpart, General Dong Jun, during their meeting on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Defence Ministers Meeting in China's Qingdao. This painting has its origins in the Mithila region of Bihar. It is also known as Mithila or Madhubani art. It is characterised by line drawings filled in with bright colours and contrasts or patterns. These paintings are popular because of their tribal motifs and use of bright, earthy colours. (ANI)

NEW DELHI: India has asked China to constructively work towards a "permanent solution" to the border issue under a structured roadmap to bridge trust deficit, de-escalate tensions and rejuvenate the existing mechanism to demarcate it, even as their armies continue to be forward deployed against each other along the frontier for the last five years. Acknowledging efforts by both sides to bring back a "semblance of normalcy" in bilateral ties, Singh also put forward a four-point plan to put the overall relationship on an upward trajectory, officials told TOI. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now This involves both sides first strictly adhering to the plan that led to troop disengagement at the two remaining face-off sites at Depsang and Demchok in eastern Ladakh last Oct, which has reduced the risk of any inadvertent escalation. They should now move forward to the next steps of de-escalation and de-induction of troops from their forward deployments along the LAC. The two countries should also accelerate efforts to achieve the goal of demarcation and delimitation of the border and register concrete progress in the existing special representatives (SR) level mechanism to achieve a fair and mutually-acceptable solution to the boundary question and other issues. The forward momentum in bilateral ties has gained ground since national security advisor Ajit Doval and Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi discussed various issues under the SR mechanism in Beijing last Dec for the first time since 2019. "Singh said India and China should not remain stuck in the past. He called for bridging the trust deficit created after the border standoff in 2020 by taking action on the ground," an official said. "The two ministers agreed to continue consultations at various levels to achieve progress on issues related to disengagement, de-escalation, border management and eventual de-limitation through existing mechanisms," he added.
