Phillies and Mets Complete Trade Despite NL East Standing Battle
Phillies and Mets Complete Trade Despite NL East Standing Battle originally appeared on Athlon Sports. It's trade season in the MLB, but it's uncommon to see trades completed within the same division when both teams fight at the top of the standings. That's exactly what the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets did Tuesday night. Advertisement The Phillies have acquired non-roster infielder Donovan Walton from the Mets in exchange for cash considerations, according to MLB Trade Rumors. This isn't a flashy trade that's going to put the Phillies steps ahead for a World Series run, but it is a move that improves their farm system depth. Walton was not on the Mets' 40-man roster, so he will not immediately occupy a place on the Phillies' roster. He will be joining the Phillies' Triple-A affiliate in Lehigh Valley. The new Phillies' addition is a lefty in the box and a versatile utility player in the field. Walton had been playing with the Mets' Triple-A affiliate in Syracuse in 2025 after signing a Minor League contract in November. Advertisement The utility players' numbers have been subpar so far this season, hitting just .222 with a .315 OBP, and a .693 OPS. However, he has launched 11 home runs, and has a strong walk to strikeout ratio, earning 30 walks and striking out 39 times on the season. Walton brings some experience at the big league level as well. The veteran has spent part of five different seasons in the major leagues with the Seattle Mariners and San Francisco Giants, with his most recent stint being at the end of 2024. Walton has also been in the minor league system since 2016. Still, he nearly made the Mets' roster this season over Luisangel Acuna. Advertisement Walton mainly plays in the middle infield, but has experience in left field and at third base, bringing versatility to a Phillies' minor league team lacking depth. Throughout his 10 years in the minor leagues, Walton has sustained a respectable .279 BA with a .785 OPS, and those numbers stay consistent during his five years at the Triple-A level with a .271 BA and a .794 OPS. Mets announce roster cuts, bullpen comes into focus
Reinhold Matay-Imagn Images As we get closer to the 2025 MLB season beginning, the 26-man roster will slowly but surely come into focus. Today, the Mets made a slew of moves—both involving those who will be cut, and those who made the roster. Advertisement Beginning with the cuts, utility infielder Donovan Walton and catcher Jakson Reetz were both informed they would not make the roster, which opens the door for Hayden Senger to make it as the backup catcher, and Luisangel Acuña to make it as a utility infielder — though, of course, the Mets could add an outside option as more and more players get cut across the league. On the pitching side, Chris Devenski. Génesis Cabrera, and Jose Urena did not make the club, the latter having an opt out but deciding to stay with the organization rather than test the waters in free agency. On the flip side, Reed Garrett, José Buttó, and Danny Young made the team — two of which do not come as a surprise. Garrett was one of the mainstays of the 2025 bullpen, and barring an absolutely disastrous spring he would be a lock to get high leverage innings right out of the gate for the Mets. Buttó was also largely assumed to make the team, as he is one of the better multi-inning relievers on the roster, and should be more suited for the role in 2025 as he came into the year exclusively as a reliever, after being a long time Minor League starter in the organization. Young is a more interesting case, as it may mean one of A.J. Minter or Dedniel Núñez may not be ready by the time March 27 rolls around. Both Minter and Núñez battled injuries to end the 2024 season, with the former battling a left hip injury from May of last year, eventually getting season-ending surgery on it in August, and the latter suffering through a flexor strain in his throwing elbow that shortened what looked like a breakout year for the righty. Both relievers had late starts to their spring due to these injuries so it is not terribly surprising that they may not be ready for Opening Day, but it is still worth noting. Advertisement More from
