NHL offseason tracker: Lukas Dostal signs; Maple Leafs, Canucks make trade
Most of the NHL's top unrestricted free agents have found homes. But there is plenty of action still to happen during the NHL offseason. There are trades to be made and restricted free agents to re-sign. Salary arbitration cases are scheduled to begin on July 20 and run through Aug. 4, though both sides often settle beforehand. Also, players whose contracts run out after the 2025-26 season are eligible to sign contract extensions at any time. Here is a look at the signings, trades and other news that have happened since the initial surge of movement in late June and early July: July 17: Ducks, Lukas Dostal agree to five-year deal Dostal avoids arbitration with his deal, which averages a reported $6.5 million a year. He gets a big raise from his current $812,500 average after establishing himself as the No. 1 goalie in Anaheim. That was further cemented when the Ducks traded goalie John Gibson to the Red Wings. Dostal, named to the Czech Olympic team, went 23-23-7 last season with a 3.10 goals-against average and .903 save percentage. He made 40 or more saves a league-best five times. July 17: Maple Leafs acquire Dakota Joshua from Canucks Vancouver receives a 2028 fourth-round pick. Joshua will likely slot in the Maple Leafs' bottom six forwards. He had a career-best 18 goals and 32 points in 2023-24 but missed the beginning of last season after having surgery for testicular cancer. He finished with 14 points in 57 games. He originally was drafted by the Maple Leafs but never played for them. July 17: Blue Jackets' Yegor Chinakhov requests trade Yegor Chinakhov, a former first-round draft pick of the Blue Jackets, has asked for a trade. The agent for Chinakhov posted on X, formerly Twitter, about the trade request. 'I had some misunderstandings with the coach during the season,' read the post quoting Chinakhov. 'Now I would be glad to have a trade. I would like to move to a different location. Will I return to Russia? As long as I can play in the NHL, I will keep developing here.' Chinakhov, who was selected with the No. 21 overall selection in 2020, missed nearly half of last season with a back injury, an issue that also sidelined him for the final 17 games in the previous season. - Joey Kaufman, Columbus Dispatch July 15: Sabres re-sign Bowen Byram for two years The defenseman will average $6.25 million in the deal. He was considered a candidate for an offer sheet but the Sabres reportedly filed for arbitration to prevent that. He ranked third among Sabres defensemen in average ice time and third with 38 points. The cap hit makes him the third highest paid defenseman on the team behind Rasmus Dahlin and Owen Power. Who has filed for salary arbitration? The biggest names were Dostal and Jets forward Gabriel Vilardi, who set career bests with 27 goals, 34 assists and 61 points for the NHL's top regular season team. Two other Jets players filed. Anaheim Ducks re-sign Lukas Dostal to five-year, $32,500,000 contract
Photo by Sean M. Haffey/Getty Images The Anaheim Ducks have solidified their goaltending future by re-signing Lukas Dostal to a five-year deal worth $32,500,000. The 25-year-old restricted free agent will now carry a $6.5 million average annual value, making him one of the league's highest-paid active goalies heading into the 2025-26 season. This move follows Anaheim's recent shift in goal, signaling Dostal's promotion to the starting role and a new era in the crease. Lukas Dostal secures long-term future as Anaheim Ducks' new starting goalie Lukas Dostal's new contract places him among the NHL's top 10 highest-paid goaltenders by average annual value. The Czech netminder earned his extension after posting a .903 save percentage over 54 games last season and ranking ninth in the league with 22.5 goals saved above expected, according to Evolving-Hockey. With the departure of longtime starter John Gibson, Dostal now becomes the focal point in Anaheim's crease for the foreseeable future. The organization's faith in Dostal is rooted in his steady development and performance. Drafted in the third round of the 2018 NHL Draft, he has compiled a 42-58-13 record and a .902 save percentage across four NHL seasons. While the team around him has been in transition, Dostal's numbers show promise, especially given his workload during a rebuilding phase. Anaheim hands Dostal the net as Gibson era ends This offseason has been one of change for the Ducks. In June, Anaheim traded veteran goaltender John Gibson to the Detroit Red Wings, ending a decade-long tenure. As part of the return, the Ducks acquired Petr Mrazek, who is expected to serve as Dostal's backup in 2025-26. With Dostal now under contract long term, Anaheim has made its direction clear: the crease belongs to their young netminder. Mrazek provides a veteran presence, but it's Dostal who will shoulder the majority of starts as the Ducks continue their rebuild with an eye on contention in the coming seasons. Lukas Dostal's new five-year deal reflects the Anaheim Ducks' confidence in his ability to anchor their net moving forward. With the Gibson era officially over, Dostal has the opportunity, and the contract, to prove himself as the next franchise goaltender in Anaheim. Red Wings acquire goalie John Gibson from the Ducks in a trade at the NHL draft
The Detroit Red Wings acquired John Gibson from the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday, a trade of the veteran goaltender that could start the dominos falling around the NHL with several teams looking for help in net. HT Image Detroit sent backup goalie Petr Mrazek, a 2027 second-round pick and a 2026 fourth-rounder to Anaheim for Gibson, whose name has been in trade rumors for several years. No salary was retained. "I've been assured he's excited to come to Detroit, and we're excited to have him," Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman said on NHL Network. 'Our understanding was they have an excellent young goaltender in Dostal, and John was looking for a fresh start and saw an opportunity in Detroit to get in the net and play a lot of games.' Gibson, 31, has spent his first 12 years in the league with Anaheim. He started 28 games, compared to 49 for Dostal, last season, and he's signed for two more at a salary cap hit of $6.4 million. Ducks GM Pat Verbeek worked under Yzerman for a decade, and the two began speaking about Gibson before the trade deadline in March. Injuries derailed a move then but set the table for the western Pennsylvania native to go to Hockeytown. 'We want to thank John for his time with our organization and being an integral part of the Ducks for more than a decade,' Verbeek said. 'It became clear John wanted a new opportunity, and after many discussions with him we felt now was the right time to make this move.' Back-to-back Western Conference champion Edmonton, rebuilding Philadelphia and others are expected to pursue a goaltender this offseason, and the list of unrestricted free agents with starting experience is not long. Jake Allen, Ilya Samsonov, Anton Forsberg and Ville Husso are among the top options available. A couple of other trades were finalized Saturday while rounds 2-7 of the draft was ongoing. The Kings traded 24-year-old D-man Jordan Spence to Ottawa for the 67th pick and Colorado's sixth-rounder in 2026. Buffalo also sent Connor Clifton and a second-round pick to Pittsburgh for Conor Timmins and Isaac Beliveau. Washington signed 23-year-old forward Justin Sourdif for $1.65 million over two years after sending a second-round pick to two-time Stanley Cup champion Florida for the minor leaguer with four games of NHL experience. Sourdif scored a goal in his lone call-up this past season and had 10 points in 18 games on the Charlotte Checkers' run to the American Hockey League's Calder Cup Finals. The Capitals are hoping Sourdif, making just over the league minimum at $825,000 annually, fills a hole on their second or third line. There was no room for upward mobility for Sourdif, especially after the Panthers signed playoff MVP Sam Bennett to an eight-year, $64 million contract and could bring back winger Brad Marchand. North of the border, the Calgary Flames extended 6-foot-6 Kevin Bahl to a six-year deal worth just over $32 million, while the Winnipeg Jets shored up their blue line depth by giving Haydn Fleury $1.9 million over the next two seasons. Bahl will count $5.35 million against the salary cap through 2030-31. NHL: /hub/nhl This article was generated from an automated news agency feed without modifications to text.

Dostal is 2-3-0 with a 3.89 GAA and .872 SV% in 5 starts and 1 relief appearance in April. He faced the Wild once this season, allowing 5 goals on 31 shots in a 5-2 home loss on Nov. 8. Ducks at Wild picks and predictions Prediction Wild 5, Ducks 2 The Wild (-275) will cost you almosyt 3 times your potential return, and that's way too much risk for not nearly enough reward. The Ducks (+220) have been out of the playoff race for a while, and they're just 14-19-6 on the road this season. AVOID, though, as it is just too little of a return. The WILD -1.5 (-102) is on a mission to finally clinch in the regular-season finale. With the Ducks playing for nothing, and the Wild on the inside track for a Wild Card spot, back the home team to get the job done. However, don't be surprised if you're sweating it out, needing a late empty-net goal to get over the hump. OVER 6 (-105) is the lean, but go with a half-unit play at best. The Over has cashed in the 2 previous meetings in Anaheim, averaging 5.0 goals per game (GPG), while allowing just 1.5 GPG. The Over is 3-1-1 in the past 5 games for the Ducks, while the total has gone high at a 6-3-1 clip in the previous 10 outings for the Wild. Takeaways from the Ducks 3-2 Loss to the Maple Leafs
The Anaheim Ducks continued their five-game homestand on Sunday when they hosted the visiting Toronto Maple Leafs at Honda Center. The Ducks were coming off a dramatic 5-4 comeback victory over the New York Rangers on Friday. They were looking to eclipse the .500 mark on the 2024-25 season for the first time since March 4. Game #73: Ducks vs. Maple Leafs Gameday Preview Advertisement The Maple Leafs entered this game on their second of a back-to-back and their third game in four nights after losing to the San Jose Sharks in a shootout 6-5 on Thursday and defeating the Los Angeles Kings 3-1 on Saturday. Jacob Trouba was forced out of Friday's game with a lower-body injury after crashing into the end boards in the third period. He remained out of the Ducks lineup on Sunday and was replaced by Oliver Kylington, who had been acquired at the trade deadline for future considerations. Kylington was paired with sophomore defenseman Olen Zellweger. The rest of the Ducks' forward lines and defensive pairs remained unchanged from Friday. Lukas Dostal got his second start in a row in this game and saved 20 of the 23 shots he faced. He allowed goals on a backhand from the slot, a breakaway, and a perimeter shot that was tipped by an unguarded Steven Lorentz in front. He shouldn't be held responsible for any of those goals against. Advertisement Dostal was opposed by Joseph Woll, who stopped 29 of 31 shots. 'I thought we battled hard the whole game,' Ducks defenseman Jackson LaCombe said after the game. 'We did a great job with our compete, our effort. They're a really good team, and I thought we stuck with it the whole time, and they got a good bounce at the end with the tip. We just couldn't get one back.' Here are my notes from this game: Forecheck-The Leafs did well to clog up the neutral zone and keep the Ducks from entering the offensive zone cleanly or with speed. The Ducks' attackers did better to smartly dump pucks below the goal line and to places where they had a higher percentage to recover and ignite a cycle. Advertisement 'We try to create a predictability when we crossed the red line and the blue line is jammed up and there are no plays to be made,' Ducks head coach Greg Cronin said after the game. 'We try to get everyone connected off of dump-ins and that was working tonight for us.' Radko Gudas-Gudas was the closest Duck in proximity to the puck when all three Leafs goals went in. He can be attributed direct responsibility for two of them: 1. Toronto's first, where Max Domi froze Gudas on the rush, dragged the puck across the front of his body laterally and lifted a clever backhand over Dostal. 2. Toronto's third, where he lost Lorentz back to the front from a corner battle and allowed him to screen Dostal before getting a tip on a shot from the half wall. 'It's one of those games going either way and ironically, their fourth line goes out and scores the winning goal on a wrist shot from the wall and we just lost coverage at the net front,' Cronin said. Pavel Mintyukov and Olen Zellweger-Now that the Ducks' two youngest defensemen aren't playing under the looming threat of a potential extended periods as healthy scratches, the duo is playing far more open and free, willing to take chances when joining the rush, activating off of the offensive blueline, and even establishing pressure on a forecheck when their forwards are in the midst of a line change. Advertisement Their ability to recognize opportunity from the weak side of the ice or start breakouts singlehandedly adds a dynamic element that opposing forechecks have to respect, opening up ice for themselves and teammates alike. The Ducks will finish off their five-game homestand on Tuesday when they'll host the San Jose Sharks.
