Dovetail surf tour brings young Australian surfers to Japan's beach towns
This summer, some of the next generation of surfers from Australia's Sunshine Coast are trading their home breaks for a tour of Japan's coastlines. They're here to train, explore and connect with local surf communities. The tour moves through some of Japan's most surf-steeped towns, from the relaxed, wave-worn shoreline of Onjuku in Chiba Prefecture to the controlled precision of Shizunami Surf Stadium in Shizuoka Prefecture, where surfers fine-tune their aerials in one of the country's most advanced training environments. Shirahama Beach, Shizuoka – Famous for its white sand and amazing surfing conditions Image: Dovetail Inc The expedition isn't focused on contests or trophies, but it does spotlight some of Japan's most surf-friendly coastal towns — places where people shape their days around the tides, community and a slower pace of life. It's about meeting locals, getting a feel for what it's like to live in a Japanese beach town and, of course, catching waves. An Entryway to Authentic Local Life in Japan The tour is supported by Dovetail, a Tokyo-based real estate company that helps international clients buy property in Japan. Along the way, the surfers are staying in Dovetail-arranged guesthouses and beach homes — places chosen not just for ocean access but for their connection to everyday life in these towns. Think traditional minshuku, family-run inns common in Japan's countryside and coastal regions, and renovated kominka (historic folk houses) tucked behind the shoreline. With tatami floors, home-cooked meals and a lived-in feel, they offer a glimpse into how people there have lived for generations. For Dovetail, they represent an entry point into authentic local life in Japan. View from the balcony of Kamogawa Ocean Front Villa, their Kamogawa accommodation. Five Surfers Explore, Progress and Connect in Japan At the center of the tour are five young surfers, each bringing their own style, goals and energy to the trip. While their reasons for coming vary, from pushing their skills to simply surfing new breaks, they all share a curiosity about Japan's waves and culture. Sonny Brooke (13) from Marcus Beach comes in with national titles under his belt, including first place at the Parko Pro Junior and the Australian Interschools Championship. He's focused on pushing his aerials and learning from some of Japan's experienced surfers and coaches. Sonny Brooke Image: Sonny Brooke Darcy Dwyer (16), another Noosa standout, brings an impressive competition record, including podium finishes at the Australian Surfing Titles and a consistent top-10 national ranking. Darcy Dwyer, Image: Darcy Dwyer Archy Wallace (16) from Noosa Heads is known for radical airs and full-power surfing, and he's here to test new tricks at Shizunami Surf Stadium. Archy Wallace Image: Archy Wallace Isaac Markwell (17), from Queensland, recently won the Open Men's division at the Noosa Festival of Surfing — and once placed first in a dog-surfing contest with his cattle dog, Bear. Isaac Markwell Image: Isaac Markwell Kirra Sweetman, also from Noosa, rounds out the group. She brings a clean, flowing style and has been featured in 'Surfline' and the upcoming book 'Why I Surf.' She hopes to land her first forehand straight air in Japan. Kirra Sweetman Image: Kirra Sweetman Each surfer brings something different to the trip — style, experience, energy — but all of them share a drive to grow and explore Japan. The Dovetail Surf Tour Schedule Over ten days, the group travels through some of Japan's top surf destinations in Shizuoka and Chiba prefectures, combining surf sessions with cultural experiences and city sightseeing before returning home. The surfers will be visiting these locations on the tour: Boso Peninsula, Chiba Prefecture (Onjuku, Katsuura, Kamogawa) Hiratsuka City, Kanagawa Prefecture (Hiratsuka) Shimoda City, Shizuoka Prefecture (Izu Shirahama) Makinohara City, Shizuoka Prefecture (Shizunami, Shizunami Surf Stadium) Makinohara City is a scenic blend of lush tea fields, rich cultural heritage, breathtaking views of Mount Fuji and a haven for Marine Sport Culture with the most advanced wave pool in Japan making it a destination for nature, marine sports lovers and culture enthusiasts alike. Join Us for the Finale at Shizunami Surf Stadium Tokyo 2021 Olympic surfing gold medalist Carissa Moore, from the United States, rides the waves at Shizunami Surf Stadium. Image: Makinohara City Office On the day the group trains at Shizunami Surf Stadium, Dovetail is inviting the public to watch the surfers showcase their skills. One of the tour's key goals is to attract a big crowd for the Shizunami wave pool finale, turning it into a lively celebration of surf and community. Shizunami Surf Stadium is Japan's best wave pool, offering a variety of perfect waves all year long. It is located in Shizunami, Makinohara City, Shizuoka Prefecture, about two hours south of Tokyo via the Tokaido shinkansen. Where: Shizunami Surf Stadium: 2220 Shizunami, Makinohara, Shizuoka 421-0422 When: Wednesday, July 23, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Discover Coastal Real Estate in Japan's Surf Towns/ Explore Coastal Living and Real Estate Opportunities in Japan Dovetail's surf tour is less about chasing the perfect wave and more about seeing how life flows through Japan's quieter side, like surfing sunrise with locals, walking through neighborhoods where wetsuits hang outside front doors or snacking in places where the menu changes with the tide. It's a look at a lifestyle that's hard to find in cities — even Tokyo — but still very much alive in Japan's coastal communities. For Dovetail, that's the point: surf towns where the line between vacation and daily life starts to blur — in the best way. If you're inspired by the surf, culture and lifestyle of Japan's coastal towns, Dovetail can connect you with homes near the beach. Their bilingual team supports international buyers through the entire buying process. Reach out to Dovetail to explore real options for coastal living in Japan. Independent Study Reveals 236% ROI with Dovetail's AI-First Customer Intelligence Platform
Article content Total Economic Impact™ study highlights significant cost savings, faster time-to-insight, and productivity gains for organizations using Dovetail Article content SAN FRANCISCO & SYDNEY — A newly commissioned study conducted by Forrester Consulting on behalf of Dovetail has found that organizations using Dovetail's AI-first customer intelligence platform achieved a 236% return on investment (ROI) over three years, with payback occurring within under six months. Article content Article content Released in April 2025, the Total Economic Impact™ of Dovetail study examines the financial and operational benefits of using Dovetail to unify, analyze, and act on customer insights. Based on interviews with Dovetail customers, combined to form a composite organization model, the study found that businesses: Article content Realized over $1.05 million in productivity gains through streamlined workflows Generated $507,000 in additional profit by increasing primary user capacity by 30%, enabling faster product iterations Saved 36,000 hours over three years on manual research processes such as transcript checks and cross-video analysis Saved $416,000 over three years by retiring legacy research tools, transcription services, and repositories Article content 'Instead of taking days to analyze the results, you get it almost instantly per session,' said the Head of Research and Insights at a healthcare organization featured in the study. 'Now, the production time alone of saving three days or more is significant to speed to market. The sooner you capture value in the market, the sooner you get a return on investment. So that alone I would say speeds [projects] up by at least 30%.' Article content A Design Research Lead at an IT services company added: 'Without Dovetail, we would either need more researchers, or we would just have to accept poor quality. We would probably be talking about an additional five to 10 researchers, which is 30% more. Using Dovetail early in the product lifecycle has enabled us to support more projects, including several with seven-figure outcomes.' Article content Customers also cited improved collaboration across departments, stronger alignment on customer needs, and greater agility in product development and strategic planning. Article content 'The fastest-growing companies today aren't just shipping fast, they're shipping the right things,' said Benjamin Humphrey, CEO and co-founder of Dovetail. 'We believe this study validates what our customers experience every day: when teams are aligned around real customer intelligence, they move faster, waste less, and build with confidence. We're proud to partner with forward-thinking teams who are proving that better customer understanding drives better outcomes.'
