Matty Healy's Mom, Denise Welch, Shaded Taylor Swift

In 2023, months before she began dating Travis Kelce, Taylor Swift was in a highly divisive — and relatively short-lived — relationship with Matty Healy. For some context, Taylor and Matty were known to run in the same social circles for many years; however, when they first stepped out as an apparent couple after her split from Joe Alwyn in May 2023, Taylor's fans were not on board with the new romance — largely due to some of Matty's past problematic behavior, which you can read about here. So, when the pair broke up after just one month in June 2023, the Swifties were relieved that Matty was out of the picture — until just under a year later, when Taylor released The Tortured Poets Department. As you may remember, the album, which dropped in April 2024, was packed full of lyrics seemingly chronicling the ups and downs of what was essentially revealed to be a 9-year situationship between Taylor and Matty, which ended with him allegedly ghosting her. Songs like 'Peter,' 'Fresh Out the Slammer,' 'Down Bad,' 'But Daddy I Love Him,' 'I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can),' and 'The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived' were just a few of the songs on TTPD speculated to be inspired by the 1975 frontman. It was a wild time to be on the internet. You can read a full breakdown of Matty's apparent influence on TTPD here. Of course, song lyrics are always open for interpretation, so we don't know exactly what happened between these two. However, it's probably fair to speculate that the breakup was pretty messy — for Taylor, at least. And now, just a month after Matty was accused of shading Taylor during his headlining set at Glastonbury, his mom, UK TV icon, Denise Welch, has weighed in on the relationship and all the chatter surrounding it. During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live this week, host Andy Cohen asked Denise for her 'reaction' to Taylor writing 'a whole album' about Matty, to which she bluntly replied: 'Not being her mother-in-law is a role that I'm glad I lost.' There were literal gasps from the studio audience, and even Andy looked shocked, which prompted Denise quickly to clarify that she doesn't have 'anything against' Taylor; she just didn't love the way things played out with TTPD. 'It was just, you know, it was tricky,' she said. 'Listen, you're not allowed to say anything, and then she writes a whole album about it. But Matty has taken it all in completely good grace. He's very happy with his amazing fiancé Gabriella, Gabbriette, who is gorgeous…We've moved on.' FYI, Denise did not get Gabbriette's name wrong. Her real name is Gabriella, which is presumably what her close friends and family call her. It's not taken long for Denise's quotes to be all over social media, and, as I'm sure you can imagine, the Swifties are not best pleased… I, for one, am certainly intrigued by her claim that they weren't 'allowed' to discuss the breakup, but what do you think about it all? LMK in the comments. You can watch the clip of Denise on Watch What Happens Live here.

Matty Healy takes subtle dig at ex Taylor Swift in Glastonbury set with "poet" remark

Matty Healy sparked speculation during his Glastonbury 2025 performance after calling himself 'a poet,' with fans linking the remark to his former relationship with Taylor Swift. Healy, frontman of The 1975, made the comment during his headline set, where he said, 'I'm probably the best songwriter of my generation,' followed by, 'The best, what do we say — a poet.' The term 'poet' has led to renewed discussion about Swift's 2024 album The Tortured Poets Department, which many listeners believe contains songs inspired by her brief relationship with Healy in 2023. Tracks such as 'Down Bad,' 'I Can Fix Him (No Really I Can),' and the title song have been widely interpreted as referencing their time together. Healy's use of the word during a high-profile set has not gone unnoticed by Swift's fans. Social media users speculated that the remark was a subtle reference or even a direct response to his appearance in Swift's songwriting narrative. One comment read, 'Why is he trying to get clout from TTPD?' while another added, 'He'll always be known as Taylor Swift's ex.' Healy has not confirmed whether the comment was intended as a reference. In the past, he has responded to questions about Swift's lyrics and their brief romance but has mostly avoided engaging directly with fan speculation. Since their relationship, both artists have moved on. Healy became engaged to model Gabbriette Bechtel in 2024, while Swift is currently in a public relationship with NFL player Travis Kelce.
