What experts are saying about Drake Powell draft pick
What do the experts think of Brooklyn drafting Drake Powell? Night one of the 2025 NBA Draft is officially in the books, and while the North Carolina Tar Heels didn't have a lottery pick this year, they did have a first-round pick. The Atlanta Hawks drafted freshman Drake Powell and then sent him to the Brooklyn Nets as part of a previously agreed-upon trade. Powell goes in the first round after just one season at North Carolina, and was one of five Nets' first-round picks on Wednesday night. Going into this draft, Powell was being mocked as a late first round pick or early second round pick but has now found his home with the Nets. Following the first night, multiple outlets have released their draft grades and thoughts for picks and teams. Here is what they are saying about the Powell pick. The Athletic Here is what John Hollinger had to say about the Powell pick: Powell is the best athlete left on the board but his offensive projection is a bit concerning. If he makes it is likely to be as a defense-and-energy guy. Brooklyn will hope it can fine-tune his shooting and decision-making to the point that Powell has rotation-level utility. For the Win For The Win graded every pick and here is what they had for Drake Powell. The Nets are throwing darts by selecting North Carolina freshman Drake Powell. The former McDonald's All-American wing didn't show a ton while at Arizona. He averaged just 7.4 points per game, though he will earn his living on the defensive end of the floor. This is a bet on his athleticism, especially after he led the NBA Draft Combine with a 43-inch max vertical. He also performed well with the three-quarter sprint and the shuttle run. This isn't the most exciting pick, but for a team that has so many young players coming in next season, it's a solid pick. Grade: C+ Yahoo! Sports Here is how Yahoo! Sports graded the pick: Grade: A Powell has a chiseled frame that he uses to barrel into defenders at the rim and to contain opponents when he's on defense. He's a switch-everything defender who plays with a high motor, and if his spot-up jumper translates he checks all the boxes to be a 3-and-D role player at a minimum for the Nets. But as a projected lottery pick entering college, maybe he'll tap back into the shot-creating upside that he was once recruited for. CBS Sports Here is how CBS Sports graded the pick: This is a little bit of a reach. The upside is a 3-and-D wing but the offense is not there yet. It's a major work in progress. Good athlete. Good defender with long arms. High character kid. Not NBA ready right now. The theme of this class for Brooklyn is they seem to think they can develop shooters. If these guys can develop as shooters, they'll be fine. I don't think he'll help the Nets next year. It's only because of my faith in the Nets' player development program that I'm not being more harsh. Grade: C+ Nets Daily Here is what Lucas Kaplan wrote on Powell as part of a recap of the Net's picks: Drake Powell is a major outlier in Brooklyn's draft class. He had one of the lowest usage rates in all of high-major NCAA basketball last year, but the five-star 2024 recruit posted decent shooting numbers and has awesome, athleticism-based defensive potential. How social media reacted to Drake Powell's 2025 NBA Draft selection
The former Tar Heel was a late first-round selection in Wednesday's NBA Draft. When Drake Powell declared for the NBA Draft, mixed emotions ensued. Powell proved his defense was next-level, but despite a few offensive outbursts, another year in college would likely cement Powell as a Lottery Pick. As the first round in Wednesday's NBA Draft reached the 20s, Powell waited to hear his name called. It finally happened – with the 22nd overall pick, the Atlanta Hawks chose Powell. The Brooklyn Nets own the rights to Powell's selection, though, so Powell will actually play his rookie NBA season in New York Wednesday night marked the second consecutive year UNC had a player drafted, with Harrison Ingram taken 48th overall by the San Antonio Spurs. In addition, Powell is the first former Tar Heel chosen in the first round since 2022, when Walker Kessler (finished his career with Auburn) also went 22nd overall, but to the Utah Jazz. Brooklyn, once a promising team with the likes of superstars James Harden, Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, now sports a young roster with plenty of talent. The Nets don't have a clear-cut starting small forward, so Powell should slide in nicely next to Ziaire Williams. Powell brings defensive intensity and a hidden scoring ability to Brooklyn, which complements Powell with stars like D'Angelo Russell, Cam Thomas and former Tar Heel Cameron Johnson. Powell averaged 7.4 points and 3.3 rebounds per game, but as mentioned previously, his 29 steals and 25 blocks highlighted his defensive abilities. Powell will be missed in Chapel Hill, but it's time for him to go chase his childhood dreams. Let's take a look at social media and see reactions to Powell's selection: To the Nets he goes! UNC freshman drafted in the first round of the 2025 NBA Draft to the Brooklyn Nets
Drake Powell, UNC basketball freshman, was taken No. 22 overall in the 2025 NBA Draft to the Brooklyn Nets. With the 22nd pick of the NBA Draft the @ATLHawks select Drake Powell (@powellxdrake)!2025 #NBADraft presented by State Farm LIVE on ABC & ESPN! Originally projected to be a late first-round pick even falling to the second round in some final mock drafts like ESPN, Drake Powell was selected as the No. 22 overall pick by the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday night. The Hawks then sent Powell to the Brooklyn Nets. The deal that landed Brooklyn the No. 22 overall pick involved the Boston Celtics as well, moving Kristaps Porzingis. Powell will head north in the Eastern Conference, where he will team up with star guard Cam Thomas and fellow Tar Heel Cameron Johnson. The team also boasts De'Angelo Russell, Drew Timme, and Keon Johnson. Last year, the Hawks drafted Zaccharie Risacher with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft before going 40-42 this season. They ended last season in the No. 12 spot in the Eastern Conference with a 26-56 record. They have already drafted BYU guard Egor Demin with the No. 8 pick. Powell will add much-needed two-way play for the Jordi Fernández-coached team that lacked much resemblance of defense last season. The 6-foot-5 forward averaged 7.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.1 assists per game last season while shooting 48.3% from the field and 37.9% from behind the arc. Still very much raw talent, the right organization could take Powell and mold him into the potential of a star two-way player like Mikal Bridges or Norman Powell. Time will tell how Powell will fit into the rotation and what kind of player the Nets can groom him to become, but they obviously saw something great in him. Nets 2025 NBA Draft: Every pick from Wednesday's first round
Here are all of the Nets' picks from the first round of the 2025 NBA Draft on Wednesday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn... Round 1 No. 22 pick: G/F Drake Powell, UNC Acquired on Tuesday along with Terance Mann in a three-team deal with the Boston Celtics and Atlanta Hawks, the Nets used their third first-rounder on the freshman from UNC. Powell became the first player from North Carolina drafted in the first round since, coincidentally, the Nets took Day'Ron Sharpe with the No. 29 pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. Advertisement The 6-foot-6 and 190-pound wing was a top-15 ranked, five-star recruit and 2024 McDonald's All-American and stayed in his home state of North Carolina to play for the Tar Heels. He was a bit inconsistent during his freshman season, averaging only 7.4 points, 3.4 rebounds, 1.1 assists across 25.6 minutes in 37 games, but still showed off his athleticism and potential. He came on stronger toward the end of the season, including a 16-point performance against Miami. Overall, Powell shot 48.8 percent from the field and 37.9 percent from three. Powell's offensive game is still developing. He has a knack for finishing through contact and plays with an aggressive motor, which combines well with his elite athleticism. He's also a connective playmaker. Powell can also get the job on defense due to his instincts and his athleticism, and his reads should improve as he gets more experience under his belt. As raw as he is, the potential is there. No. 19 pick: G Nolan Traoré, France Traoré, listed at 6-foot-5 and 175 pounds, is an athletic guard from France. He averaged 11.7 points, 1.7 rebounds and 5.1 assists across 22.8 minutes per game in 29 contests with Saint-Quentin of the LNB Élite. Advertisement In 2024, the then-18-year-old set an Adidas Next Generation Tournament (ANGT) Finals single-game record with 45 points in U18 PFBB INSEP Paris's 101-96 victory over U18 FC Barcelona. Scouts will rave about Traoré's potential and athleticism, as he's a player who looks more than ready to play at the NBA level from a physical perspective. He has excellent vision for his age, above-average speed and an elite acceleration that makes him not only the fastest player in this class, but one of the fastest players in the NBA if he ends up being drafted. Plus, he also has an outstanding bounce and physical abilities that should get most scouts excited. He also understands how to create his own shot, and his playmaking ability is above-average as well. There are areas in which he needs to improve, though, most notably his defense. No. 8 pick: G Egor Demin, BYU While many thought GM Sean Marks would make a splash and trade up, the team kept the eighth overall pick and used it on guard Egor Demin from BYU. The 19-year-old from Russia played for Real Madrid before his lone season of college basketball, in which he averaged 10.6 points, 5.5 assists, and 3.9 rebounds per game over 33 contests. Advertisement Demin showed why he was a five-star prospect and took home Big 12 All-Freshman Team and All-Big 12 Honorable Mention honors. He totaled 180 assists to set a BYU single-season record by a freshman and will get plenty of opportunities to run the show in Brooklyn. Demin is a 6-foot-9 point forward with some of the best passing skills in the draft. He has the vision, size and creativity to make almost every type of pass with accuracy and seems to prefer setting up his teammates rather than scoring. While Demin isn't a great jump shooter, he is crafty around the basket and in the mid-range area with fakes and a soft touch. Defensively, he's at his best anticipating the offense, jumping into passing lanes and using active hands to generate steals and blocks. Future picks: Round 1, No. 26 Round 1, No. 27 Round 2, No. 36 This story will continue to be updated as picks are made...
