I was worried about 'The Sandman' season 2 — but the first episode proved me wrong

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. "The Sandman" is officially back for its second and final season on Netflix. I won't lie, that last part had me worried. The first season of the DC Comics adaptation was lovingly — and expensively — crafted by Warner Bros. Television and Netflix. So my first reaction when I heard that season 2 would be the show's last was "Oh my god, they're going to cheap out on this." I'm happy to report that this isn't the case. At least, not through the show's first episode. The CGI-heavy show still doesn't look cheap at all. It also still tells incredibly compelling stories. Just the first episode alone is setting up multiple storylines that I can't wait to explore over the next 10 episodes. So if you were hesitant to start "The Sandman" season 2, don't be. This final season seems set to avoid becoming a nightmare. If you've never seen "The Sandman" or have never read any of the DC Comics stories, here's a brief synopsis. The series revolves around Morpheus, also known as Dream (Tom Sturridge). Dream is one of the Endless, a group of seven that personification of life's core components. As you can tell from his name, he's the embodiment of dreams and rules a fantastical world known as the Dreaming, which exists in the time and space we explore while we sleep. The first season kicks off with his capture in an occult ritual in 1918 and his subsequent escape years later in 2025. He's then thrown into multiple storylines where he's forced to save the real world to keep his realm of the Dreaming intact. Spoilers for "The Sandman" season 2 episode 1, "Season of Mists," beyond this point Season 2 picks up with Dream ready to restore the Dreaming to its full glory after the events of season 1. But before he can begin, he's called to visit his brothers and sisters — the Endless. While with them at Destiny's home, he is goaded into journeying to Hell to free Nada, ruler of the First People and Dream's former lover, whom he has imprisoned in Hell for 10,000 years. As he readies to make the journey, though, his emissary to Hell returns with starting news: Lucifer is eagerly waiting Dream's arrival. When the devil is excited for you to come to Hell, that's typically bad news. This plotline is adapted from "Season of Mists," the fourth volume of the DC Comics run of "The Sandman," so as someone who I already know what story is being set up here — and that's a good thing, because "Season of Mists" is probably my favorite "Sandman" story. I won't spoil what's coming. All I'll say is fans of the show "Lucifer" will find it an easy story to connect with. But "Season of Mists" isn't the only great "The Sandman" storyline that's being set up here. A lot of time is being spent on the one member of the Endless who is absent from Destiny's meeting. That member of the Endless isn't mentioned by name, so I won't reveal it here either. But they play a key part in the seventh volume of "The Sandman" comics, "Brief Lives." Spoiler alert, but that's also the name of the fourth episode of season 2, so we can essentially confirm the show will explore that storyline further. Another volume name that has been turned into an episode title is the "Kindly Ones," which is the penultimate volume of the comics run. It's the title of the third-to-last episode of season 2, volume 2 (which drops on Netflix on July 24), so we know that storyline will be addressed as well. That means this season of television is covering three volumes from the comics at a minimum. But there's evidence in the official cast for this season that the show will also address "A Game of You," which is volume five of "The Sandman" comics run, right after "Season of Mists." Given that it looks like we'll go straight into adapting "Brief Lives" after adapting "Season of Mists," it's unclear where an "A Game of You" adaptation would fit in. Even if it isn't part of the show's final season, though, I am concerned that the show is simply not going to have enough time to satisfactorily address these four storylines. The good news is that, after watching the first episode of season 2, my only remaining concern is that the show has too many good stories to tell in not enough episodes. The cast remains exceptional, the stories are compelling and the CGI looks of the highest quality. There are certainly worse problems to have. Stream "The Sandman" season 2 volume 1 on Netflix Brad Pitt's 'F1' is 'Top Gun: Maverick' with cars — I'm so glad I didn't wait for it to hit Apple TV Plus Ryan Gosling's new movie looks like 'Interstellar' meets 'The Martian' — and the first trailer looks awesome 'Smoke' showrunner reveals why he dropped that major twist in Apple TV Plus' new true crime thriller

You can find those HERE! Has The Sandman Been Renewed for Season 3? At the time of writing, Netflix has cancelled The Sandman and Season 2 is the final season. Netflix tends to look at views and the drop-off rates before renewing or cancelling the show, along with the critical success. Some shows are instantly renewed like One Piece and Bridgerton while others take years such as The Watcher and The Victim's Game. The Sandman was actually a critical and commercial hit and was renewed mere months after the Season 1 premiere in 2022. However, in January 2025, it was announced that the show would end with Season 2. What do we know about The Sandman Season 3? Nothing is known about The Sandman Season 3 given that it is not happening. It is loosely based on the DC comic of the same name and it seems that all of the source material will be covered with the release of The Sandman Season 2 Volume 2. However, Netflix is not beyond the occasional spin-off and there are tons of side stories that can be adapted, such as those in 'World's End' or 'Fables and Reflections'. But this is all speculation. We'll be sure to update this page as soon as any new information comes in but for now, Morpheus' story ends with Season 2. Would you like to see The Sandman return for a Season 3? Or do you think the story has run its course? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

The Sandman – Season 2 Episode 2 'The Ruler of Hell' Recap & Review

Episode 2 Episode 2 of The Sandman Season 2 begins with Morpheus arriving in Hell only to find it empty. He is welcomed by a dejected and depressed Lucifer who assures him that they don't have any tricks up their sleeves. They go as far as to promise that within the bounds of Hell, they won't harm Morpheus. Curious, he follows along as Lucifer locks all the gates and has their wings cut off. Once they are out of Hell, the fallen angel then gives the key to Morpheus. He accepts it and realises Lucifer's plans too late. Lucifer never wanted to rule Hell, and inspired by Dream constantly leaving his realm, the fallen angel has quit Hell. All the residents of Hell have left, including Nada which means her location is now unknown. On top of that, Morpheus's life just got harder as he cannot let the key fall into the hands of someone reckless. Morpheus panics as he rushes back to the Dreaming. With Lucifer gone, every being hungry to rule Hell is after the key. He tries to palm it off to Death so he can focus on finding Nada. She refuses and reminds him of his first duty as the new ruler of Hell. He needs to retrieve all the demons and Hell's souls before they wreak havoc on the world. On cue, a bunch of beings show up, demanding the key. Morpheus decides to host a banquet and pick Hell's next ruler. Some notable attendees include Thor, Odin, Loki, Kilderkin, Chaos, Japanese sea god Susano-O-No-Mikoto and Azazel. Next arrive the fae ambassadors, Cluracan and Nuala. Every seven years, nine faeries are given to Hell as a tithe. They want Morpheus to stay as the ruler of an empty Hell. Nuala is upset as Morpheus continues with his diplomatic assurances. As they are led to the banquet, the Dreaming subjects acquiesce to every guest's wishes. From a secret gallery, Morpheus observes everyone reveal their true selves. Lucienne's first pick is Odin but Morpheus notes that he is reckless enough to bring his imprisoned trickster of a son, Loki. As expected, Odin wants Loki to trick Morpheus into giving them the key. But Loki claims his powers don't work on Dream in his own realm. Most of the guests think the best way to win Dream over is to bribe him. Lucienne's next pick is Azazel since he knows Hell best. It cuts to Azazel and his party engaging in sadistic acts. Thor is nasty with the female demon, Merkin and she puts him in his place. Nuala checks on her while Thor causes a scene. Morpheus steps in and ends the fighting. More guests arrive but they are the angels, Remiel and Duma who simply want to observe and report to God. Morpheus is nervous but his chef, Taramis, sees it as him having the upper hand. She deduces that even God doesn't know what to do or He would have taken the key. Everyone knows Morpheus will make the right decision. Soon, bribes are offered. Morpheus rejects Kilderkin's dream essence. Chaos threatens him. Susano-O-No-Mikoto makes a sincere pitch. Next is Odin who offers to find the missing Endless. He also reveals why he is desperate; he hopes to delay Ragnarok by relocating the giants and the dark elves to Hell. Following a gory show presented by Cain and Abel, Morpheus ends the banquet and sends everyone to their rooms. He also confides in Lucienne that he finally has two candidates. At the end of The Sandman Season 2 Episode 2, Azazel shows up in Morpheus' throne room. He offers Choronzon as revenge for challenging Morpheus in Season 1. When Morpheus rejects the gift, Azazel reveals that he has Nada. He brutally kills Choronzon and threatens to kill Nada the same way unless he gets the key. The Episode Review The Sandman Season 2 Episode 2 is another fun chapter and if this season continues the same way, the show can very well end with the legacy of having the perfect run. It seems that this adaptation has found a working formula and is sticking to it in every episode. Morpheus faces a challenge with a sprinkle of some existential philosophy or moral dilemma, the bad guys get involved but they aren't really bad and right when the problem is about to be resolved, there is a shocking cliffhanger. Along with it, we also get some exciting characters from folklore and myths in a new form such as the desperate Odin, a fae who is actually sincere for once, and the angry Japanese sea god who has changed. Lucifer's plan is a masterclass on revenge as well. Like Morpheus, viewers will be second-guessing Lucifer's every move till the other shoe drops. And the best part is that it cannot go wrong. No matter what decision Morpheus takes, Lucifer has won. But we do hope this isn't the last we see of the fallen angel.
