Over 73K youth employed in 369 days: CM
Bhubaneswar: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Monday said his government has facilitated employment for 73,346 youths in just 369 days since taking office. Speaking at 'Nijukti Mela' (employment fair), where appointment letters were distributed to 964 newly recruited youths, mostly junior engineers, Majhi said, 'Our government is only one year and four days old. In this short span, we have appointed 73,346 youths — 28,346 in government departments and 45,000 in the private sector.' Underlining the importance of government jobs, Majhi said he and his ministers failed to bag government jobs and therefore opted for other professions like politics. However, the newly recruited youths are lucky to get absorbed in the government sector, he said. 'People have an obsession with government jobs. This is clearly shown in the Hindi film 'Nayak', where the heroine's father refuses to marry her off to a journalist and insists on a government servant. That reflects how highly people value government service,' Majhi told the gathering. Majhi said, 'Only 2 per cent of Odisha's population are in government jobs. That's why we are actively creating jobs in the private sector.' He said the State has finalised investments worth Rs 13 lakh crore, expected to generate 12.90 lakh private-sector jobs. 'Once these industries are set up, large number of jobs will be created for our youth,' he emphasised. Calling youths the 'pilots of Odisha's development chariot,' Majhi said, 'We are committed to channelling the energy, potential, and enthusiasm of the youth for the State's development and social welfare.' Of the 964 recruits, 907 are junior engineers who, he said, 'will contribute significantly to infrastructure and growth.' He expressed the hope that the newly recruited youths would work with honesty and dedication. 'Always remember, your actions and decisions at the government level must reflect public interest. You are servants of the people,' he said. Majhi said the government plans to recruit 1.5 lakh youths in the State service over the next five years. 'Around 65,000 posts will be filled in the first two years. Till date, 28,346 government posts have been filled,' he said, adding that the age limit for government jobs has been raised from 32 years to 42 years. Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister K C Patra, Works Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan, Housing and Urban Development Minister K C Mahapatra and Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water Minister Rabi Narayan Nayak were also present on the occasion.

It's cholera in Jajpur, death toll 11; two more districts report outbreak
BHUBANESWAR: Even as the death toll surged to 11, the Odisha government on Friday confirmed the presence of cholera-causing bacteria in samples collected from the affected areas of Jajpur district. Adding to the government's headache, two more districts also reported the outbreak on the day. Official sources said, of the 41 faecal samples sent to the laboratory for testing, eight tested positive for Vibrio cholerae, the bacterium responsible for cholera. So far, over 700 others have been taken ill across four blocks and one urban local body in the district. The official death toll, however, is five. 'We are verifying the details of other deaths,' director of public health Dr Nilakantha Mishra said. Health officials have intensified surveillance, water quality monitoring, and awareness campaigns in the affected regions, including Dharmasala, Danagadi, Korei, and Rasulpur blocks and Vyasanagar municipality to prevent the further spread of the disease. Two more districts - Bhadrak and Keonjhar - also came under the grip with several people from Bhandaripokhari and Anandpur blocks getting admitted in the hospitals following diarrhoea. 'We have received reports of people with diarrhoea in several places in Jajpur district, and small pockets in Keonjhar and Bhadrak districts. Health teams have been sent to affected areas to take stock of the situation. We are taking every possible measure to avoid further cases,' said Dr Mishra. The state has been consistently reporting cases of cholera in last few decades, particularly affecting the lower socio-economic groups in districts like Rayagada, Koraput, Kalahandi, Nuapada and Sundargarh. In 2023, at least 13 people died and over 1,000 were affected in Rourkela while eight persons died and 104 others were hospitalised in Rayagada district in 2022. Poor access to clean drinking water, lack of sanitation, and delayed medical attention were cited as major factors contributing to the severity of the outbreak. On the day, chief secretary Manoj Ahuja reviewed the situation at a high-level meeting attended by Health secretary Aswathy S and senior officials from the Health and Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water departments. The Health department has appealed to people to consume boiled or chlorinated water and avoid open defecation. Ahuja directed the officials to conduct door-to-door visits and intensify awareness activities in the villages to prevent the spread of the disease and complete the disinfection work in 10 days. Affected districts have been asked to provide proper treatment facilities besides ensuring availability of drugs, saline and other essentials in hospitals.

Accompanied by senior officials from various departments, including Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water Secretary Girish SN and Jajpur District Collector P Anvesha Reddy, the Chief Secretary visited the village on Monday and talked to villagers and inspected key development initiatives. Though a lot of development has been achieved since 2016, still a lot many needs urgent attention, an official accompanying Ahuja said, adding that the Chief Secretary has issued directions to the district administration to expedite completion of house construction under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. 'As only 60 per cent of the houses were completed in a span of three years, Ahuja issued directions to officials concerned to ensure early completion of housing units,' an official statement said. Information and Public Relations department, in a post on X, said: 'Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, during his visit to Jajpur district, visited Nagada under Sukinda block to review the actual situation and developmental works. He visited the Upper Nagada Anganwadi centre and reviewed the ground zero situation.' During interactions with beneficiaries of 'Mamata Yojana' (a programme for pregnant and lactating women), the Chief Secretary asked officials to include all eligible individuals who were previously left out. The Chief Secretary also inspected drinking water tanks and found their poor maintenance and asked the officials to stress on water conservation for the use of villagers during the summer. Ahuja also asked the officials to expedite empowering farmers by allocating land ownership certificates under the Forest Rights Act. Similarly, he found very few students attending schools and asked the officials to improve student attendance rates. The Chief Secretary, during the visit, found the village's tribal hostel closed for the last three years. He asked the District Welfare Officer (DWO) to make immediate arrangements for its reopening.
