Sadou Diallo then tried his luck from distance on the half hour but his effort sailed harmlessly off target . Electricity goes out during Shelbourne vs Derry City in League of Ireland opener Derry eventually broke Drogheda's resolve from a short corner. Duffy received the ball back from Whyte and clipped it into a crowded penalty area where Todd headed into the corner of the net. The hosts doubled their lead three minutes later when Duffy raced on to Liam Boyce's through ball and rounded the keeper but his strike was cleared off the line by Quinn. The clearance fell to Ronan Boyce who steered the ball into the net. Derry were well in control but Drogheda found a way in behind the City defence moments later. Thomas Oluwa got away from Mark Connolly and sent a strike towards goal but Brian Maher stood tall and saved at the front post. Carl Winchester had the ball in the net when he received the ball from a sublime defence-splitting pass from Whyte. But the Belfast man strayed offside and the goal was ruled out. Diallo then picked out the run of Duffy with a pass over the top. But the winger's effort on the volley dipped over the crossbar as Derry threatened to put the match to bed before the break. SECOND GEAR Derry continued to dominate at the start of the second half. And livewire Duffy was the next to threaten as his effort from the edge of the penalty area was just deflected behind by Conor Keeley's block. Keeley — scorer of a brace on Drogheda's last visit to the Brandywell — was then in the thick of the action at the other end. The former St Pat's defender chested down a cross inside the Derry box before volleying narrowly wide of the target on 63 minutes. Substitute Mullen put the icing on the cake in the fifth minute of stoppage time for the hosts. Duffy's strike was saved by the foot of Dennison — but it fell straight to the feet of the ex-Livingston ace who tapped in from four yards. Derry City climb to second with comfortable win over Drogheda United
Derry City 3 (Todd 33, Boyce 36, Mullen 95) Drogheda United 0 DERRY CITY's Donegal defensive duo Sam Todd and Ronan Boyce sent the Brandywell outfit on their way to a comprehensive victory over a lacklustre Drogheda United to move into second spot in the table. Carndonagh man Todd headed home the opener on 33 minutes from Michael Duffy's clipped cross and three minutes later Ramelton native Boyce pounced to fire home the rebound when Andrew Quinn cleared Duffy's strike off the line. Substitute Danny Mullen added a third five minutes into stoppage time and again Duffy was heavily involved as his strike at the near post was turned into the path of the Scotsman by Drogheda keeper Luke Dennison. It was a third win on the bounce and a third consecutive clean sheet for the Foylesiders, who remain 11 points behind runaway leaders Shamrock Rovers with two games in hand and above third place Bohemians on goal difference. The win was Derry's first over Drogheda United in 12 months since a 5-1 thumping at Brandywell on June 28th and this one was just as comfortable as they avenged a 3-1 defeat by the Boynesiders earlier in the season. Tiernan Lynch was quite happy to stick with the same starting eleven who won back-to-back games in Dublin against Shelbourne and St Pat's last week despite facing into a third game in the space of eight days. His opposite number Kevin Doherty was down to the bare bones and made two changes from the team which drew 1-1 at Cork in their last outing as Thomas Oluwa and Aaron Harper-Bailey came in for Frank Cooper and Warren Davis. Gavin Whyte was lively in the early stages and when he got the ball into feet from Diallo five minutes into the match, the ex-Portsmouth man turned Gavin Brennan but his shot from 25 yards was saved by Luke Dennison. Derry were dominating the ball but without any real tempo and Drogheda were quite content to let the home side play in front of them without troubling the Boynesiders' defence. From Michael Duffy's inswinging free-kick from wide on the right on 24 minutes Holt rose highest at the front post but his glancing header bounced wide of the far post with Dennison rooted to the spot. Diallo tried his luck from distance on the half hour mark as Drogheda continued to frustrate the Candystripes but the midfielder's effort sailed harmlessly off target. Derry broke Drogheda's resolve from a well worked short corner kick on 33 minutes when Duffy received the ball back from Whyte and clipped it into a crowded penalty area where Todd rose above James Taylor Douglas and headed into the corner of the net for the Carndonagh man's first goal of the season and second in 40 appearances for the Brandywell club. The home outfit doubled their lead three minutes later when Duffy raced onto Liam Boyce's throughball, rounded the keeper but his strike was cleared off the line by Andrew Quinn. That clearance fell to Ronan Boyce who continued his run and steered his close range effort into the net. It was the first time Derry scored two goals in a game since a 2-1 win over Cork City on May 9th in Turner's Cross. Derry were well in control but Drogheda found a way in behind the Derry defence moments later when Thomas Oluwa got away from Mark Connolly and from an angle sent a powerful left footed strike towards goal but Maher stood tall and saved at the front post with a strong left hand. Carl Winchester had the ball in the back of the net on 45 minutes when he received the ball from a sublime defence splitting pass from Whyte but the Belfast man had just strayed into an offside position and the goal was ruled out. Substitute Mullen put the icing on the cake in the fifth minute of stoppage time when Duffy's strike was saved by the foot of Dennison but fell straight to the feet of the Scotsman who tapped in from four yards. Derry City: Maher, Cann, Connolly, Holt; R Boyce, Winchester (McMullan 76), Diallo (O'Reilly 63), Whyte (Mullen 75), Duffy, S Todd; L Boyce (Benson 75). Drogheda United: Dennison, Kane (Cruise 55), Quinn, Harper-Bailey, James-Taylor (Bosakani 87), Farrell, Brennan (Markey 55), Heeney, Keeley, Lambe, Oluwa (Kareem 60). Referee: Robert Harvey (Dublin).

Waterford did have the chances to open the scoring in this one but just couldn't take them, with tonight's win, the Hoops' fifth in a row over the men from the south east, extending their lead by another two points and out to 11 with just 12 games remaining. 11 minutes ago Full-time: Cork City 0 - Athletic 0 No goals to speak of in Turners Cross! Kitt Nelson's chance just before the break was probably the best opportunity of the game. Overall, the Rebels probably shaded the opportunities, but the Saints had their fair share of efforts from Brandon Kavanagh and Zach Elbouzedi. On a side note, the official attendance here has been confirmed as 4,014, which is the club's lowest home league attendance so far this year. It was an unusually quiet night for the Saints marksman who really only managed one shot at goal in the form of a first-half header that cleared the crossbar. 51 minutes ago 65' Ger Nash turns to his bench again as he replaces Sean Murray with Evan McLaughlin. Murray had a fine game in midfield where he dictated play alongside Greg Bolger. Possibly unlucky not to score either! 53 minutes ago Dan McDonnell spots a triple alteration from Joey O'Brien in the 65th-minute: A treble change from Shels and one of their new arrivals - Tyreke Wilson - sends in a cross that Odubeko heads wide under no pressure. Kerr McInroy and Evan Caffrey have also come into the fray.

Double joy in Dublin should give Derry City confidence to kick on, maintains Tiernan Lynch
The Candystripes have taken just one point from two games against Kevin Doherty's side, who won at the Brandywell in April and who were denied a win in their previous meeting by a last-minute equaliser from Dom Thomas. But wins over Shelbourne and St Patrick's Athletic have changed the expectation of a team that has struggled with inconsistency so far, and Lynch is hoping his players can build on the current momentum. 'They were two big games for us and they probably showed both sides of what we've been trying to work on as a team and a group,' he acknowledged. 'We'll not get too carried away. It's two games and two wins, two big wins, and I'm delighted for the players because I felt they deserved it and, hopefully, it will give them a little bit of confidence going into Friday night.' Defender Mark Connolly looks unlikely to feature having picked up an injury at St Pat's. 'You hope it has now given us the confidence to now kick on,' he said. 'We've been crying out for that little bit of consistency. I've been saying all season that they are a great bunch of boys who give you everything that they have, and I think you saw that in both games on Friday and Monday. 'Even when we were under the cosh, they rolled their sleeves up and they dug in. That's character and I think they gave us that in abundance so, hopefully, we can take that into Friday night and bring that little bit of consistency into what we're doing.' Derry have failed to beat Drogheda in any of the previous four meetings, including the 2024 FAI Cup Final, but looked on the verge of doing so at the Brandywell only for a complete implosion after Liam Boyce's opener which saw the striker red-carded before Drogheda took advantage of the dismissal by scoring three times. 'Liam Boyce got sent off and we capitulated after a seven or eight-minute period,' Lynch recalled. 'That was a difficult day for us and probably summed up where we were at that stage. Hopefully, we've moved on from that. 'Defensively, we have been much more solid and that has given us a platform to kick on, and hopefully Friday night is the same.' City could potentially go into second place with victory on Friday evening, a huge incentive after a challenging few weeks.

Man who raped teenage girl (17) sentenced to over eight years in prison
A man who raped a 17-year-old girl has been sentenced to eight-and-a-half years in prison. The Central Criminal Court heard that that Jibola Moses Akanni (27) of St Laurence Drive, Drogheda, Co Louth, was found guilty of two counts of rape and one count of sexual assault at an apartment on Middle Abbey Street, Dublin 1, on February 15th, 2018. Advertisement He has 28 previous convictions from both Ireland and the UK relating to road traffic matters, as well as convictions for theft, public order and handling stolen property. Passing sentence on Thursday, Mr Justice David Keane commended the injured party in this case in the manner in which she conducted herself through the trial and wished her well for the future. Judge Keane said the aggravating factors in this case were the extended nature of the ordeal while the injured party was barely conscious, the disparity in the age of both parties and that she was an intoxicated and vulnerable person at the time. The judge set a headline sentence of nine years for each of the rape charges and four years for the sexual assault charge. Advertisement The judge said that a limited amount of mitigation can be granted for Akanni's cooperation with the gardaí, and with regard to his previous conviction, 'the best that can be said is that they are not for this type of offending.' He stated that 'no credit can be given for a guilty plea, as none was forthcoming, and he does not accept the jury's verdict, nor has remorse been shown.' Judge Keane noted that the probation report placed Akanni at high risk of sexual or violent reoffending. He accepted letters handed to the court by Akanni's parents, who spoke of his good and finer qualities. Judge Keane sentenced Akanni to eight-and-a-half years on each of the two rape counts and three-and-a-half years for the charge of sexual assault all of which are to run concurrently and backdated to November when he went into custody. Advertisement With regards to rehabilitation, the judge said: 'There is no prospect of his engagement in sexual offending courses and there is no realistic hope of promoting rehabilitation, so I will not suspend any part of the sentence.' The judge said: 'In order to protect the public from the risk of him sexually reoffending, I will place him under the supervision of the Probation Services for two years post-release.' He instructed that Akanni carry out all directions that the Probation Services deemed necessary. At a previous hearing, Garda Orla Cashel told Rebecca Smith, BL, prosecuting, that the injured party travelled to Dublin to attend a concert. When she arrived at the venue with her friends, she was refused entry as she was underage. While she was waiting outside the venue, she met a male whom she had met before. He invited her and her two friends to an apartment where he was staying, which was next door to the venue. Here she met Akanni. The group listened to music and drank. Advertisement The court heard that the injured party attempted one more time to enter the venue but was again refused. She did not want to ruin the night for her friends and told them to go to the concert and that she would wait in the apartment. The injured party was upset that she could not get into the venue, and Akanni held a bottle of alcohol to her lips and told her to drink. The injured party said she was tired and was going to go to sleep. She complained that she was lightheaded, and again Akanni held the bottle to her lips, and he then turned off the lights in the bedroom where she was. Gda Cashel said that Akanni then asked her what she had done sexually and if she had had sex with her boyfriend, to which she said 'no' and stated that she was 'only 17'. Advertisement At this time, she was fully dressed and unable to keep her eyes open and was not able to speak. Akanni then put his penis in her mouth. He then removed her trousers and underwear and put his mouth on her genital area. A short time later she felt pressure and pain in her vagina. The court heard that the woman's next memory was of being taken to the emergency room in an ambulance by her friends. They had returned to the apartment and noticed that her trousers were on inside out. The girl also began to vomit and was unable to stand up. Her friends brought her to the bathroom and then noticed that her underwear was also on incorrectly and stained. She was examined in a sexual assault treatment unit. Ireland University Maternity Hospital Limerick apologises... Read More Akanni was identified using CCTV and documents relating to the rented accommodation where he had stayed. He was arrested and interviewed four times, but nothing of value was obtained. Gda Cashel agreed with Ciaran O'Loughlin, SC, defending, that his client has no previous convictions for this type of offending. Mr O'Loughlin said Akanni came to Ireland when he was two years old and is now aged 27. Counsel said there was no violence or threats made; only the act itself.
