Kim Kardashian heist convict dies month after guilty verdict
One of the men convicted in connection with the infamous 2016 robbery targeting Kim Kardashian in Paris has died, according to French media reports. Didier Dubreucq, 69, passed away just a month after being found guilty for his role in the armed heist that saw millions of dollars' worth of jewelry stolen from the reality TV star. Dubreucq, who was battling lung cancer and undergoing chemotherapy during the trial, had long maintained his innocence. 'It's a mistaken identity case... I had nothing to do with this,' he testified in court back in April. Dubbed "Blue Eyes," Dubreucq was one of eight men convicted in May over the high-profile burglary, often referred to in the press as the work of the 'grandpa robbers' due to the older ages of the accused. Kardashian was reportedly tied up and held at gunpoint inside her private residence during Paris Fashion Week nearly a decade ago. During the trial, Kardashian shared a harrowing account of the robbery. 'I would be shot dead on the bed,' she recalled thinking as a gun was pointed at her head. In total, the robbers made off with approximately USD 10 million worth of jewellery, including her USD 4 million engagement ring given to her by then-husband Kanye West. Dubreucq received a seven-year sentence in May, five of which were suspended. However, he did not return to prison following the verdict, having already spent two years in pre-trial detention. Three other men were handed similar sentences, mostly suspended, and also avoided further incarceration. Presiding Judge David De Pas justified the leniency, stating that 'the state of health of the main protagonists ethically prohibits incarcerating anyone.' In a statement following the convictions, Kardashian described the robbery as 'the most terrifying experience of my life,' adding that it left a 'lasting impact on me and my family.'

Frenchman who robbed Kim Kardashian dies of cancer aged 69
A French robber convicted with seven others of stealing jewelry worth $10 million from reality television star Kim Kardashian in Paris in 2016 died on Thursday, a source close to the case said. Didier Dubreucq, 69, was diagnosed with lung cancer during pre-trial detention and had been undergoing chemotherapy. He was among 10 suspects to be tried earlier this year for stealing jewels from the American influencer, including a huge diamond ring from her now ex-husband, rapper Kayne West. Dubreucq, who police nicknamed "Blue Eyes" due to his piercing gaze, was accused of being the second person who stormed into Kardashian's hotel room on the night of October 2-3, 2016, but he denied the charges. A Paris court last month sentenced him to seven years in jail, including five suspended, over the robbery. He was absent for the ruling as he was undergoing chemotherapy, and did not return to jail as he had already served his two years in pre-trial detention. In April, he had however turned up in court after a chemotherapy session to say he had "nothing to do" with the theft. He said he did not like to be labelled an "armed robber" despite having served a 23-year sentence for past armed robberies. "I'm a good guy," he said, rejecting suggestions that he was a "thug". Since becoming a father at the age of 50, Dubreucq said, he had put an end to the "big mistakes" of the past. None of the eight people convicted last month returned to jail, including 69-year-old ringleader Aomar Ait Khedache, because of the time they had spent behind bars awaiting trial. © 2025 AFP

Kim Kardashian 'grandpa robber' dies month after trial
One of the "grandpa robbers" found guilty of stealing jewellery worth millions from reality TV star Kim Kardashian has died one month after being convicted, French media have said. Didier Dubreucq, 69, was diagnosed with lung cancer while in detention prior to going on trial and had been undergoing chemotherapy. In May, he and seven accomplices were found guilty of the high-profile Paris heist, during which millions of dollars' worth of jewellery were stolen from Kardashian nearly a decade ago. Dubreucq denied any involvement in the heist. "It's a mistaken identity case... I had nothing to do with this," he told the court during his testimony in April. Due to chemotherapy, Dubreucq - nicknamed "Blue Eyes" - was absent from the sentencing, but received a seven-year sentence from the judge of which five were suspended. He did not spend time in prison following the sentencing as he had already spent two years in pre-trial detention. Three other people were given sentences of up to eight years, mostly suspended, but also did not return to prison because of time already served. Judge David De Pas said as he delivered the verdict that "the state of health of the main protagonists ethically prohibits incarcerating anyone". During the three-week trial, the court heard how Kardashian was bound and had a gun held to her head during the ordeal. On the day she took the stand, she recalled thinking she "would be shot dead on the bed". The thieves - nicknamed the "grandpa robbers" due to the advanced ages of those involved, stole about $10m (£7.5m) of her jewellery, including the engagement ring her then-husband and rapper Kanye West gifted her, which alone was worth $4m (£3m). "The crime was the most terrifying experience of my life, leaving a lasting impact on me and my family," Kardashian said in a statement after the verdicts.
