‘Critical minerals availability pose growing threat to energy transition'

Critical minerals such as copper and silver, which underpin the clean energy transition, are increasingly exposed to supply chain vulnerabilities, according to a senior executive at UAE-based cable and wire company Ducab. Speaking at the World Utilities Congress held from 27–29 May 2025 in Abu Dhabi, Shailendra Pratap Singh, Vice President for GCC, Europe, and the Americas at Ducab stated that copper demand is set to double within five to ten years, while traditional supply sources such as Chile, Peru, and the Democratic Republic of Congo face heightened risks from political instability and climate-related disruptions. 'There are so many political instabilities and climatic impacts, so any new investment that goes in needs a lot of approvals,' he said. He highlighted the increasing cost of copper, referencing forecasts from Goldman Sachs, which foecasts prices to reach $10,500 per metric tonne by the end of 2026, up from around $3,000 fifteen years ago. Singh added that silver, essential for solar panel manufacturing, is also under supply pressure. In response, Ducab has taken internal measures to strengthen supply chain resilience, including localised recycling initiatives. 'We try to recover and recycle our copper to the extent possible. We have in-house granulators, and we work closely with DEWA and TAQA to take the material back at the end of its lifecycle,' he said. Ducab's innovation extends to process optimisation. 'For aluminium rods, we get molten aluminium in a crucible from EGA (Emirates Global Aluminium), which is located very close to our factory. This eliminates the need to cool and remelt the material, cutting emissions significantly.' According to Singh, strengthening supply chains through material recovery and operational innovation will be essential for utilities and manufacturers as they address rising demand, resource constraints, and decarbonisation goals simultaneously. Ducab Launches DuTrack; Revolutionizing Manufacturing Efficiency in the Middle East - Middle East Business News and Information

Ducab Group, an end-to-end energy solutions provider and one of the UAE's leading industrial institutions announced the launch of DuTrack during World Utilities Congress, a new technology project marking a leap forward in manufacturing efficiency in the Middle East. As a first-of-its-kind solution, DuTrack will take efficiency to a new level by detecting the precise location of the cable drums, knowing the consumption of the cable meters that were consumed and the balance remaining on the drum. This reduces the time needed to locate drums and optimizes drum movements. Providing actionable insights from Internet of Things, data analytics and digital solutions, DuTrack enables Ducab to achieve higher levels of operational efficiency and production quality through enhanced inventory control. Charles Mellagui, CEO of Ducab Cables Business, said: 'DuTrack is a pillar of Ducab's innovation strategy, highlighting our commitment to customer-centricity while embracing cutting-edge Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies; fully aligned with the UAE's National Strategy for Industry and Advanced Technology. By providing precise insights into drum locations, movements, conditions; this technology empowers customers with greater visibility and control over their supply chain operations. With DuTrack, Ducab sets a new standard for reliability, efficiency, and transparency in the industry, enhancing the quality and overall experience for its clientele.' The state-of-the-art tracking system has smart features such as multi-carrier connectivity, accelerometers, gyroscopes and digital compasses as well as ambient sensors with internal thermometers, a fully integrated global navigation satellite system. DuTrack's advanced capabilities extend past location tracking, offering a comprehensive suite of features designed to optimize manufacturing processes and enhance productivity. It also offers delivery tracking, drum and cable geolocations and real-time inventory visibility. Additionally, it identifies empty drums for pick up and monitors drum condition in real time. "Make it in the Emirates" showcases sustainable projects

Turning Innovation into Impact Attendees shared examples of sustainable projects that effectively translate green innovations into profitable industries, both locally and globally. These projects highlight the practical integration of sustainability principles into industrial practices. Eco-Conscious Cable Production Mohammed Ahmed Al Baloushi, a maintenance engineer at Dubai Cable Company (Ducab), noted that the company exports to over 75 countries and produces environmentally friendly, recycled electrical conductors. These products contribute to the global sustainability movement by offering advanced and eco-conscious solutions. Sustainable Construction Model Fatima Jassim Al Baloushi, administrator at Bin Harmal Group, presented a UAE-based project launched in 2022 that focuses on building prefabricated structures using cold-formed steel. This environmentally friendly material is recyclable, reduces construction waste, and improves energy efficiency. Palm Waste Innovation Jamil Al Sabah, Sales Manager at Desert Board, highlighted that the company utilises palm fronds and tree waste to manufacture doors and wall panels, eliminating the need for tree felling. The process is carbon-emission-free and inspired by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan's deep commitment to environmental preservation. Repurposing Exhibition Waste Khaula Bin Buti Manager Quality Assurance in ADNEC, discussed the creation of 'Terratile,' a sustainable product developed from exhibition waste. In collaboration with Terrax Environmental Services Ltd., the project transforms plastic, paper, and fiber waste into durable flooring tiles for future events, offering an innovative solution to post-exhibition waste management.
