Can Shedeur Sanders win the quarterback battle in Cleveland?

Yahoo Sports fantasy analyst Matt Harmon and NFL writer Charles McDonald discuss the Cleveland Browns quarterback battle and why they feel like Shedeur Sanders is getting too much hype. Hear the full conversation on 'Football 301' - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube or wherever you listen. View more Video Transcript How can the Browns actually have a quarterback competition and get a look at all these guys, or is the answer just that they're not? They're not, they're just not. OK, maybe, maybe preseason games, that's probably going to be the most amount of reps that someone like Shado Sanders sees, and look, man, I mean, OK, did you see, did you see the new brown uniforms today? Yeah, those. Am I tripping, or was that black? Like, that didn't look brown to me. OK, it's not just that it's an all-brown uniform. They're sponsored by Dude Wipes. Like, come on, like, and that's what the Browns are serving to us with this quarterback competition. I have truly, truly been baffled at the amount of care that has gone into a 5th round rookie quarterback. Can we just deal with reality for a second? The reality of the situation: Shadoor Sanders, he's probably going to be out of a job by December, and I don't mean off the Browns roster. I mean eliminated from having the chance to be the long-term starting quarterback. Am I really supposed to get excited and hyped up about a 5th round quarterback who's on a rebuilding team that we know isn't good, that's rebuilding the offensive line, that's got 2 first-round picks for next year. I don't understand the fervor outside of just like Deion Sanders' worship, which he's not playing. It's not that interesting. Like, he's not a part of this anymore. It's just a 5th round rookie quarterback truly fighting for his NFL career and that's just not something that ever sticks in the NFL for teams that are trying to rebuild. They're just going to draft like Lenore Sellers or maybe Arch Manning next year. And that sucks to hear, but we have to stop talking about this as if it's a real thing because it's not. He's a 5th quarterback on a really bad team and he's not going to get a whole lot of practice reps because all the other quarterbacks that they invest more in are also new. If he was a 1st round pick, or even a 2nd round pick, I'll give it to you. I'm talking about a 5th round rookie quarterback who wasn't even the first quarterback that his team drafted in the goddamn draft. Stop, stop. Close

Watch photographer fall into Lake Erie during Cleveland Browns' helmet reveal

A photographer fell into the water while trying to take photos during the unveiling of the Cleveland Browns' new alternate helmet in Ohio. Video footage from the incident shows the person tumbling and falling into the waters of Lake Erie on Wednesday, July 23 as they attempted to take photos of the giant inflatable helmet featuring the new design and colors on a barge. Storyful, citing the Browns, reported the 20-foot barge was located about 300 feet offshore from Huntington Bank Field, the team's home stadium in Cleveland. While the Cleveland Browns did not immediately respond to USA TODAY's request for more information on Thursday, July 24, the Akron Beacon Journal, part of the USA TODAY Network, reported the person did not remain in the water long and was assisted by an officer on a jet ski. Was the fall staged? The NFL team has not commented on whether the incident was staged; however, the Akron Beacon Journal reported that the individual who fell into the water was influencer Ross Smith, who has nearly 25 million followers on TikTok, almost four million on Instagram and more than five million subscribers on YouTube. Smith shared the video of his tumble in a July 23 Instagram post that had Dude Wipes as a collaborator. The disposable wipes product brand sponsored the helmets. What does the Cleveland Browns' new helmet look like? The Browns revealed a new helmet on July 23 that will be worn occasionally during the 2025 season. The helmet is matte brown and features orange stripes down the centerline, but does not sport a logo. The Browns are the only team in the NFL that does not have a logo on its helmets. The team, one of four to never reach the Super Bowl, is calling the new crown its "Alpha Dawg." The "Alpha Dawg" helmets are the first brown helmets the team has used since being founded in 1946. They will be worn three times during the 2025 season in a monochromatic presentation, along with the club's brown jerseys and pants. "'Alpha Dawg' embodies what we set out to be as the Cleveland Browns, the leaders of the pack," the team's Executive Vice President, James Wood "JW" Johnson III, said in a statement. "We're excited about this new alternate helmet and the ode it pays to the rich history of the color brown as part of our organization, switching it up from our iconic orange helmets." Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle. Cleveland Browns' new helmets sponsored by Dude Wipes Dude Wipes has sponsored the helmets, much to the delight of the internet, as previously reported by USA TODAY. In a statement, Dude Wipes co-founder Ryan Meegan said the company is "the kings of keeping things clean," and is "here to back the Browns as they embrace a bold new look this season − with the launch of their all-brown alternate helmets." "We're pumped to team up with the Browns for one of the most iconic helmet reveals the league has ever seen," Meegan added. The Browns originally wore white helmets when they were dominating the All-America Football Conference in the 1940s and during their first two years in the NFL (1950-51). The team switched to what's become its signature orange helmets in 1952. Contributing: Nate Davis, USA TODAY & Dan Kadar/ Akron Beacon Journal Saman Shafiq is a trending news reporter for USA TODAY. Yes, the Browns' new all-brown uniforms are just as gross as you think

Despite having one of the trickiest color palettes in all of professional sports, the Cleveland Browns have almost always managed to look better than they play on the field. But in 2025 -- a season where Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel are competing for the starting quarterback role -- the franchise has opted to lean in to the groan. For the last 70-plus years, Cleveland has utilized brown, orange and white in simple, clean contrast to give the NFL one of its sharpest, most recognizable looks (2015-2020 Browns uniforms not included). The last two seasons, that's included an alternate white helmet that, while not the team's best option, still worked. This winter, however, they've opted to reflect the probable mess on the field with, uh, lots of earthen colors. That's the only logic behind a uniform reveal, sponsored by Dude Wipes (naturally), of an all-brown alternate uniform that effectively takes the balance and contrast of the team's use of white and throws it out the window. Well maybe it looks better in motion? Hmmm, nope. But if that unveiling video is accurate and my knowledge of the 1999 Kevin Smith classic film Dogma is correct, that suggests Myles Garrett, Denzel Ward and Jerry Jeudy are all Golgothans (the video in that link is NSFW, because it comes from a 1999 Kevin Smith classic). In fairness, this would explain a lot behind Garrett's general demonic presence. Anyway! These uniforms, PRESENTED BY DUDE WIPES, stink. Especially when the Browns could go out looking like this: Look at that. Zero wipes needed. Browns accused of staging viral moment in photographer's lake fall debacle

Splish splash, this Browns photographer was taking a bath. In a pretty on-brand Cleveland Browns moment, the team debuted a striking new brown alternate helmet called 'Alpha Dawg' aboard a raft on Lake Erie, only for a photographer to steal the spotlight by taking one misstep and plunging dramatically into the water. With two mascots in the picture and numerous cameras surrounding, some speculated it was a staged moment with the mascots' dramatic reactions and the photographer's fall looking a little too convenient. Advertisement The moment, talked about on ESPN's new SC+ show with Gary Striewski and Randy Scott, was speculated to be fake as the moment involved a sanitary product brand, Dude Wipes, and may have been set up to get some publicity. 'Do you think it was staged?' Striewski asked. Advertisement 'I wouldn't put it past [them] because people love to go trending,' Scott replied. 'But you know what, guy? We're not even going to say your name. I mean, look, I don't know what to believe anymore.' The video quality is another concern when diving into the video's authenticity, as it appears to be taken in 4K while a bystander on a boat recorded the interaction. 3 Browns photographer takes one step too many as he fell into a lake during a promo video. X, @CLElaytown Regardless of it being staged or not, it was a laughable moment to start a Browns season that is expected to be filled with them. Advertisement Cleveland is coming off a 3-14 season, tied for the NFL's worst record with the Giants and Titans, and a four-man QB battle between Kenny Pickett, Joe Flacco, Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel is playing out at training camp. The decision to pick two rookie QBs — Gabriel and Sanders — put added attention on the situation, especially given the spotlight that is on Deion Sanders' son after he fell to the fifth round of the NFL draft in April. 3 Many think that the photographer falling into the water is a staged moment for social media clicks. Cleveland Browns Unveil New Helmet For 2025 Season

Cleveland Browns Unveil New Helmet For 2025 Season originally appeared on The Spun. The NFL ending its one shell rule has opened up the floodgates for throwback and alternate helmets to return across the league — and the Cleveland Browns are the latest to join in on the fun. On Wednesday, the Browns unveiled matte brown helmets to go with the team's all-brown look that it adopted full-time after the NFL discontinued its Color Rush promotion in 2018. The brown lids also feature brown facemasks and the franchise's classic helmet stripe (which is an inversion of the one used on its white alternates). Fans reacted to the new helmets on X. "Calling yourself the Browns, wearing brown uniforms, while sponsored by Dude Wipes is quite something," a user pointed out. "i f—s with these heavy," another replied. "what creative and branding people greenlit this disaster?" a fan asked. "They made the all-brown uni's sponsored by WHOMST?" "The s—t stain of the NFL. 😂" another person laughed. "The color rush uni's deserve to be worn more. I'm a fan," another user commented. "Elite. 🔥 Debate a wall," Nick Karns posted. "NO DUDEWIPES CLEANING UP THAT MUCH [EXPLETIVE] LMFAOOOOO," another fan cried. "Maybe I wouldn't get dude wipes to sponsor by campaign promoting something tough and brown, but that's just me," Matt Brown said. The Browns were far from the only team to reveal a new look this week. The Buffalo Bills also announced that they'll be bringing back their iconic red helmets in Week Browns Unveil New Helmet For 2025 Season first appeared on The Spun on Jul 23, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Jul 23, 2025, where it first appeared.
