A late-night R.I.D.E. stop led to a slew of charges

Photo: DUFFERIN OPP A Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (R.I.D.E.) stop on Centre Street in Orangeville netted an alleged impaired driver. Dufferin Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) pulled over a car at 1:15 a.m. on July 4. Police officers determined the Orangeville resident was impaired and charged him with: Operation while impaired - blood alcohol concentration (80 plus) Operation while impaired - alcohol and drugs Driving a motor vehicle with liquor readily available Driving a motor vehicle with no currently validated permit The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Orangeville. In addition, his driver's licence was suspended, and his vehicle was impounded. The Dufferin OPP asks all motorists to plan ahead when consuming alcohol or drugs. If you suspect someone is driving while impaired, call 911 immediately or contact the OPP at 1-888-310-1122, or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).

Mississauga driver dies in Dufferin County crash
An Ontario Provincial Police vehicle is stationed next to a property with a large windmill. Provincial police are investigating a fatal collision in Shelburne Saturday evening that resulted in the death of a Toronto area driver. According to Dufferin OPP, the crash involved two SUVs on Highway 10 between Highway 89 and 30 Side Road, and detachment officers responded to the scene at around eight o'clock. Police say one of the drivers, a 55-year-old from Mississauga, died in the crash, while three others were hospitalized with a range of minor and serious injuries. Dufferin County Paramedics, Shelburne fire crews, the Ministry of Transportation and OPP's technical collision investigators were all involved in the emergency response and initial investigation. Police say the investigation remains ongoing and anyone with footage or additional information about the incident is asked to contact Dufferin OPP.

‘Suspicious' Dufferin County fire under investigation
Security footage of suspects who may have been involved in a fire in Amaranth Twp., Ont., on Fri., May 30, 2025. Provincial police are continuing to investigate a fire that happened in the Township of Amaranth last week, one they say spread across two homes and are deeming suspicious. According to Dufferin OPP, officers and Grand Valley firefighters responded to a fire at two homes under construction around 1 a.m. this past Friday in an estate subdivision on Fennel Drive, near the Ninth Line of Amaranth Township. Police say their investigation revealed that the fire may have been set intentionally, citing security footage that shows two people running toward the homes at around 12:40 a.m. before the fire began. They were described as wearing all black. Dufferin OPP's Major Crime Unit (MCU) is leading the ongoing investigation with help from OPP's Forensic Identification Services (FIS). Anyone with additional footage or information that may assist the investigation is being asked to contact Dufferin OPP's MCU or Crime Stoppers. Anyone affected by the incident is encouraged to contact Caledon/Dufferin Victim Services.

Man, 24, faces nearly 20 charges after 2 armed home invasions hours apart: OPP

(Ontario Provincial Police/Facebook) A 24-year-old man faces nearly 20 charges following a police investigation into two home invasions that happened within hours on the same street in the Town of Mono. Dufferin OPP says the first incident happened Friday around 9 p.m. when a suspect forced entry into a home on Shady Glen Lane and demanded valuables from the occupant. Police say shots were fired, but when officers arrived, the suspect had taken off. Around three hours later, officers responded to a report of a break-in at another home on Shady Glen Lane. Police say a struggle broke out between the suspect and the occupant and gunshots reportedly rang out. Officers arrived and took one person into custody. The accused faces a slew of charges, including careless use of a firearm, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, assault causing bodily harm, and two counts of assaulting a peace officer. He is also charged with several other weapons and court-related offences. It's unclear if any injuries were sustained in either incident. Police continue to investigate and encourage anyone with information to contact the authorities.

$180K worth of damages and copper wire missing from private property
Police in Dufferin are investigating two alleged thefts involving large amounts of stolen copper wire. On May 7, police responded to an alleged break and enter at a property near County Road 21 and 4th Line in the Township of Mulmur. Officials say the suspects had cut down utility poles and allegedly stolen roughly 300 meters of copper wire. Three days later, a second incident occurred in the same area after suspects had, again, cut down poles and allegedly removed roughly 150 meters of copper wire. The total estimated value of the copper and damages sit at $180,000.
