Jason Momoa Reacted To His 16-Year-Old Son Being Cast As Zendaya And Timothée Chalamet's Child In 'Dune: Part Three' — And Denied That He Gave Him Any 'Help'
Last month, you may have seen some chatter around the casting of the two young actors playing Leto II and Ghanima, the twin children of Paul Atreides and Chani, in the upcoming Dune: Part Three. © Warner Bros. / Courtesy Everett Collection As far as we know, Dune: Part Three will follow the events of Frank Herbert's second Dune novel, Dune: Messiah. For context, Paul and Chani are portrayed by Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya in Denis Villeneuve's film adaptations. And at the time of the casting reveal, there was much praise for the fact that the filmmaker did a damn-good job of finding two teens who look like they could actually be Timmy and Zendaya's biological kids — which is funny, given that one of the young stars already has very famous parents. In case you missed it, Nakoa-Wolf Momoa — who will star as Leto II alongside Ida Brooke as Ghanima — is the 16-year-old son of Jason Momoa and Lisa Bonet. However, speaking at the premiere for his new Apple TV+ series, Chief of War, over the weekend, Jason was keen to emphasize that his son landed the part all by himself. 'He did it on his own. I didn't want to help him, and he's done it all on his own,' Jason told Extra TV after being asked about the Dune casting. 'I couldn't do what he's doing at his age. There's no way I could sit in a room with Denis Villeneuve and hold my own. I was on Baywatch at 19. He's 16 and he's holding his shit down with Denis Villeneuve.' Despite praising his son's confidence and work ethic, Jason did joke that Nakoa-Wolf is in for 'a rude awakening' when he sees what really goes into moviemaking. '[He's] into the workforce for the first time. It's gonna be good,' he added. In another red carpet interview with Entertainment Tonight, Jason also joked that his son is gonna be 'way better' than him, which is exactly 'what you want for your children.' 'This kid…I [was] like, 'No, no, you can't act. No, no no,' and then he did it all on his own,' the dad of two gushed. 'He'll be a force.' Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya's Dune 3 official title confirmed: Reports
Previously rumoured to be titled 'Dune Messiah', much like Frank Herbert's original novel, Denis Villeneuve's upcoming adaptation now has an official title. This announcement finally puts to rest long-standing speculation over the film's title and whether the director would stray from the source per Variety, the film is now titled 'Dune: Part three'. Additionally, Villeneuve has now clarified his intentions and hopes audiences will embrace the direction he's chosen. The story will continue to follow Timothee Chalamet's character, Paul Muad'Dib Atreides, as he assumes the role of a leaf out of Christopher Nolan's 'Oppenheimer', the earlier rumours that 'Dune: Part Three' would be shot entirely with IMAX cameras have been debunked. Reports now clarify that while certain sequences will utilise IMAX technology, it will not dominate the production process. Production has officially commenced in Budapest, with Zendaya leading the initial shooting schedule in the Hungarian capital. Returning cast members include Timothee Chalamet, Florence Pugh, Jason Momoa, Javier Bardem, and Anya Timothee Chalamet was recently captured with his partner of two years, Kylie Jenner, far from the film's shooting locations. The couple enjoyed time at Pampelonne Beach in Saint-Tropez, France, on July 5. It remains unclear if Chalamet has since returned to join the production. Meanwhile, Denis Villeneuve is reportedly preparing the cast and crew for an extensive, multi-city shoot planned over several film is expected to feature a significant time leap, as evidenced by the casting of Nakoa-Wolf Momoa and Ida Brooke as Leto II and Ghanima, children of Paul Atreides and Chani, portrayed by Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya respectively. "Dune 3" Gets Title, Will Be Shot in Imax
Yara Sameh Denis Villeneuve's upcoming return to Arrakis is titled 'Dune: Part Three.' Reports had called the threequel 'Dune Messiah,' a nod to the 1969 book from Frank Herbert that the entry will adapt as its storyline, following Paul 'Muad'Dib' Atreides as he takes over as emperor. On Rentrak, the film is listed as 'Dune: Part Three.' The installment will also include sequences shot with Imax cameras. However, 'Dune: Part Three' will not be entirely shot with Imax cameras, following in the footsteps of Christopher Nolan's 'The Odyssey,' which is the first and so far only film to be produced that way. In an interview on CNBC, Imax CEO Richard Gelfond seemed to suggest that the next 'Dune' would be filmed entirely with the company's proprietary cameras, but it appears he misspoke. At the end of the interview, Gelfond was asked about Villeneuve being hired by Amazon MGM Studios to direct their reboot of the James Bond franchise. The exec's response also touched on the director's plans for 'Dune: Part Three' at Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment, which will film before the 007 revival. 'From a personal point of view, I was really happy. I like him. I think he's a genius filmmaker,' Gelfond said about the Bond hiring. 'He's so creative. He's making the next 'Dune' — with Imax cameras, he's filming the whole thing. So we haven't started talking yet, but I'm praying that that's the case with Bond.' Gelfond also touted Imax's success through the year's summer blockbuster season, citing that 'F1' earned 23% of its opening weekend grosses in Imax auditoriums. Meanwhile, 'Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning' did 20% in Imax its first two weeks. 'Think of 20% of the box office, when we're less than 1% of the screens. The public is really demanding it,' Gelfond added. Production on 'Dune: Part Three' is set to begin imminently, with Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya reprising their roles. Jason Momoa has also confirmed he will return for 'Part Three,' after featuring in the first 'Dune' but not appearing in 'Part Two.' Last year, Villeneuve spoke about the film and said the next 'Dune' installment 'will not be the completion of a trilogy' in his eyes. 'First, it's important that people understand that for me, it was really a diptych,' Villeneuve said of the first two 'Dune' movies. 'It was really a pair of movies that will be the adaptation of the first book. That's done and that's finished. If I do a third one, which is in the writing process, it's not like a trilogy. It's strange to say that, but if I go back there, it's to do something that feels different and has its own identity.' In a recent Variety interview, Bruce Markoe, senior vice president and head of post-production at Imax, explained what a movie being 'shot with Imax' means for audiences and filmmakers. 'Those movies that were shot with our film cameras receive that kind of nomenclature. Those are different than the 'Filmed for Imax' movies, which are all shot with digital cameras. However, a lot of the same kind of process takes place in the making of the movie when they're shooting with our film cameras,' Markoe said. 'Those movies still do a lot of testing and reviews, and filmmakers work very closely with us throughout the entire production, since it's our camera on set, whereas the 'Filmed for Imax' program is using certified digital cameras that are not necessarily unique to us.' 'Dune: Part Three,' starring Timothée Chalamet, begins production
Production is officially underway for "Dune: Part Three," with Timothée Chalamet reprising his role as Paul Atreides. The announcement was made via the film's official X account, which posted a photo of a desert landscape by director Denis Villeneuve, captioned: '…on a journey into that land where we walk without footprints.' According to Variety, the film's official title is "Dune: Part Three," not "Dune Messiah" as previously speculated. Some scenes will also be shot using IMAX cameras. The third installment follows the success of "Dune: Part Two," released in 2024, which won Best Sound and Best Visual Effects at the 97th Academy Awards. 'Dune: Part One' was released in 2021.
